We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

SR Pick: Honest Oscars Movie Posters

The Oscars were just last night and it was a solid enough show with many improvements from previous years. One of the big changes was the expansion of the Best Picture category from 5 nominees to 10, which at first I didn’t like although it actually worked well in the end.

The posters for the 10 Best Picture Nominees do what every movie poster does – sell the movie. But what if they were a bit more honest in their advertising?

Today for our SR pick we’ve turned the snark level up to 11 (on a 10-point scale) and selected a few of the funniest posters from a collection the guys over at College Humor created, which are dedicated to being entirely brutal and honest about what those Best Picture Nominees are really about.

In recent years the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (or BAFTA) has come into its own as an award show. In the past it was seen as a poor relation to the Oscars, but with a switch in date – that has set the BAFTA before its American counterpart- the awards are now seen as a strong indicator of who will win at the 82nd Academy Awards.

Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

Tarantino’s Western To Be ‘A Southern’ About Slaves?

In July of last year we reported on the fact that Inglourious Basterds writer/director Quentin Tarantino is planning on some day doing a Western of some sort. It’s a genre he’s a big fan of and even tipped his hat to a couple of times on-screen (Spaghetti Westerns in Kill Bill Vol.2, and he appeared in a small role as a cowboy in the Japanese film Sukiyaki Western Django as seen in the above header).

However, with the amount of ideas Tarantino has in his head for movies – from a remake of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! to a third Kill Bill – it’s hard to think that we’ll see a Tarantino take on the Western genre anytime soon.

The Oscars: 82nd Academy Award Nominations [Updated]

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday February 2nd, the official nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced live. The 2010 Oscar presentation will take place Sunday, March 7, 2010, hosted by none other than the comedic pair of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Last year’s Academy Awards saw the lovable Hugh Jackman as host and the big categories of Best Picture and Best Director went to Slumdog Millionaire and Danny Boyle. Sean Penn took home another Best Actor award and Kate Winslet won Best Actress for The Reader.

This year we have some big competition with the biggest box office film of all time in Avatar making a run for the awards and its creator James Cameron making a big returning splash into Hollywood after his last showing being the the previous biggest film of all ...

You know what I love? Quentin Tarantino movies. You know what else I love? Minimalist art. How lucky is it then that I found this set of awesome minimalist-style tribute posters for all seven of Tarantino’s movies over at Collider? Using simple bold colors and clever designs, these posters by artist Ibraheem Youssef capture the essence of each one of Tarantino’s films and would look great on any QT fan’s wall.

2010 Oscar Race Update: Producers Guild & SAG Award Winners

This past weekend the race for 2010 Oscar got just a bit more debatable, with some surprise winners walking away from both the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).

James Cameron walked away happy from The 2010 Golden Globe Awards,with Avatar taking the top trophies for Best Director and Best Dramatic Picture, leading everybody to think that the Oscars would follow suit. With the Best Picture category now open to ten nominees, variety and uncertainty were suppossed to be this year’s theme.

However, in the months leading up to the biggest award in Hollywood, only a handful of films seem to be popping up as the top contenders.

The names we keep hearing again and again are as follows (listed by name with the director in parenthesis).

2010 Golden Globe Award Winners

I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.

Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

We’ve all seen it before: A soundman’s boom mic dips slightly into frame or an entire camera crew shows up in the reflection of a shiny car window. For as long as there are humans making films, there will inevitably be mistakes in those films. We are, after all, only human (unless of course 10 more years pass and James Cameron figures out a way to change all that).

Personally, I love finding mistakes in movies – and not just the microphone and crew type, either. Mistakes in continuity, timelines and even scenery can sometime run amok in a film. The script supervisor is usually the person responsible for making sure that the character wearing a pink ball cap turned to the left and standing in front of a tall fichus tree in one scene looks exactly the same after ...

Tarantino Talks ‘Basterds’ Prequel & New Mystery Project

We’ve already known for quite a while that Quentin Tarantino is planning a prequel for his brilliant WWII flick, Inglourious Basterds. He already revealed back in May that he had half of the prequel already written, and a few months later, Inglourious Basterds producer Harvey Weinstein talked about the possibility of another film.

Now we’ve got an update on the Inglourious Basterds prequel, as well as on a new project that may be Tarantino’s next, thanks to NYMag (and The Playlist). Firstly, regarding the Basterds prequel, Tarantino said that he’s got 40 pages of it written – so not quite halfway as he said before, unless the runtime comes in at under an hour and a half, which for QT, I doubt.

Inglourious Basterds Coming To DVD/Blu-ray In December

Well, how about that? Our previous reports that the Weinsteins were planning on releasing Quentin Tarantino’s war film, Inglourious Basterds, on DVD before year’s end for Award reasons have turned out to be true. The Playlist points us to Blu-ray.com where they confirm December 15th in the U.S. and December 7th in the UK as release dates for Inglourious Basterds on DVD and Blu-ray. Earlier this year, the financially strapped Weinsteins sold the DVD distribution rights to Universal who will be handling the release.

However, where the news has been confirmed of an early Inglourious Basterds release, this news differs in that it won’t be a “down and dirty, bear-bones” release after all. Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: September 27, 2009

This week:

The box office is still Cloudy; Neve Campbell Screams again; Dourif and Plummer confess to a Priest; TNT give some Basterd’s $12 million and Paul Dano decides to Cruise with Diaz.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs retained the top spot and banked another $24.6 million over the weekend. The animated tale has now made a pretty good $60 million so far.

Bruce Willis had to settle for the runner-up position for Surrogates. The comic book adaptation made a so-so $15 million despite a trim 88 minute running time.

The Fame remake grossed $10 million over the weekend. There’s really nothing that I can say about this.

The Informant brought in a little under $7 million on its second weekend giving the new Matt Damon/Steven Soderbergh team-up $20 million in the bank so far. Off a slim 33% percent from ...

Weinstein Employees Not Immune To Job Loss

I’m sure the Weinstein Brothers have told their employees which ones are being let go, because finding out via a movie blog that you need to register for unemployment is really uncool.

It would seem that even Hollywood can fall succumb to the ills of a recession-filled economy. Even as Hollywood boasts of record profits (due mostly to a handful of films and the extra boost from 3D sales), major studios like Universal and The Weinstein Company are either cutting back expenses or letting people go.

Such is the sad case today as TWC announced the trimming of their roster from around 125 to about 90 for the next round of cuts coming next month.

On top of that, TWC will also limit the number of films released to 10 per year. That breaks down to four for ...

The Weinsteins Acquire ‘A Single Man,’ Did Tarantino Save Them?

Today we have a couple of pieces of news pertaining to The Weinstein Company, headed by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein. The first tibit is that the company has acquired the Toronto International Film Festival hit, A Single Man. The second is speculation over the company’s finances, and what part Inglourious Basterds writer/director, Quentin Tarantino, is playing in that calculation.
