Uwe Boll (“Germany’s answer to Ed Wood”)

Personally I’m just happy that I didn’t see most of the movies on this list. The Happening caught me off guard, though; if I could get my time and money back for that one, I would. And poor Uwe Boll–The Razzies are really raking him over the coals, creating a special category just to highlight his failures.

On a side note, I’m glad to see that the debacle that was Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull is also getting the recognition it deserves: as a steaming pile of…well, you know.

It’s Wednesday so it’s time for our weekly open discussion, but as it happens this one is hitting on the last day of 2008! Can you believe this year is over already?

And what an incredible year it’s been for movies… 2008 was a banner year for superhero movie fans with the likes of The Dark Knight, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Hellboy 2, and yes – even Hancock and Punisher: War Zone.

Other great genre films included Rambo, Cloverfield (do you even remember that opened this year?!), Tropic Thunder, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Kung Fu Panda and more.

Of course we’ve had our share of not so hot movies this year like The Happening, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Meet Dave, Meet the Spartans, X-Files, etc. Then there those we were looking forward to that left some of us disappointed like Indy 4 and Quantum of Solace.

I think this would be a great place to post your comments regarding your faves and not so favorite movies of this year… Hits, misses, surprises – whatever floats your boat (within our usual guidelines of course).

All of us here at Screen Rant wish you a very Happy New Year and here’s hoping that 2009 turns out to be as great a year for movie fans as 2008 was!

I’m sure you can all guess which movie took the top spot (just in case…. it’s The Dark Knight), and yes it’s predictably Twilight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that are the second and third most searched.

But the rest of the list may not be as you might have thought. Here it is, in descending order:

25. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
24. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
23. The Godfather (1972)
22. Star Trek (2009)
21. The Departed (2006)
20. Quantum of Solace (2008)
19. Dragonball (2009)
18. Wanted (2008)
17. Terminator Salvation (2009)
16. Cloverfield (2008)
15. Superbad (2008)
14. Into the Wild (2007)
13. Sex and the City (2008)
12. There Will Be Blood (2007)
11. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
10. Transformers (2007)
9. Juno (2007)
8. No Country for Old Men (2007)
7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
6. Iron Man (2008)
5. The Expendables (2010)
4. TR2N (2011)
3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
2. Twilight (2008)
1. The Dark Knight (2008)

A few of the usual suspects are there with the top three spots already mentioned above, and other familiar films rounding out the top 10 like Iron Man, Indy IV and Transformers. However one film which stands out to me is The Expendables, which in case it doesn’t ring any bells is Sylvester Stallone’s action flick set to be released some time next year. Having said that, when you look at Stallone (the film’s star, writer and director) alongside Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren (and hopefully a couple more 80s action icons) – and the interest in the film may not be all that surprising.

Although IMDB’s ratings system is flawed because it allows users to vote for films without having actually seen them (hence why The Dark Knight went to number one within hours of being released, temporarily beating out The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption as the all time top film) it’s still a fantastic source (actually, it’s THE source) for movie information.

So does this list reflect what movies you’ve been most interested in over the last year or is a much loved movie absent?

Open letter to George Lucas: Here's how you can make Indy 5 a GREAT movie.

The holiday season is upon us once again. And in the time-honored tradition of making a wishlist of what we hope to receive, I thought I would present something from my personal list for 2009:

A fifth Indiana Jones movie.

Now don’t get me wrong, I certainly don’t expect to receive one in 2009. What I am hoping for is the official announcement that one is in progress; that the contracts have been signed, and pre-production is well under way.

I know that some of my colleagues here at Screen Rant have weighed in on their opinion regarding a fifth Indy movie. Harrison Ford, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times, stated that George Lucas was working on an idea that was “crazy but great.”

As unhappy as many people were with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I was happy they managed to get the band back together again. The movie felt like a sound-check, a warm up jam session in preparation of the concert to come. It is my opinion that if Steven Spielberg, Lucas and Ford truly listen to the criticism regarding the last film, they have the ability to win back the fans of the franchise, and maybe even end the series on a high note. Is this likely? George Lucas certainly doesn’t have a history of caring what the fans of his films think.

Granted, while another film seems to be a sure thing, it still took seventeen years before we got our fourth Indy movie. One of the reasons for this is the MacGuffin, or object of Indy’ quest. Lucas has stated in the past that Indiana Jones’ greatest obstacle is finding a MacGuffin that he, Ford, and Steven Spielberg can all agree on. The two greatest, most memorable quests have been for the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail. But for many fans, it is not the Grail nor the Ark that are so fantastic, but the story that surrounds them. They are mere plot devices for the adventures of Indiana Jones.

What I am basically saying is: Don’t stress too much about the object of the adventure… just focus more on the characters and the action. Everyone knows that Indy will find what he is seeking – it’s how he achieves his goal that keeps us entertained.

To that end, one thing I’d like to see less of in the fifth movie is exposition. The last film featured more expository dialogue than any of the previous films. This slowed the pacing down noticeably at several points in the movie. While exposition is necessary in any film to get some points across, just tone it down a bit next time, please.

In regards to the characters, it should remain an Indiana Jones adventure, NOT a Mutt Williams picture featuring guest star Indiana Jones. If Lucas and company want to feature Mutt, I might be up for it in the future, but only after Indy has received a proper send-off. Personally, I enjoyed the character growth of Indy as a father, with the parallels drawn between the relationships of Henry Sr. and Indy with those between Indy and Mutt. In this context, Mutt as a character worked for me. What drew the ill-will for Mutt from so many was the way he took too much focus off of Indy. Henry Sr. was more of a foil for Indy, whereas Mutt seemed groomed as more of a successor.

Who would I like to see in a fifth movie? Aside from Indy, Mutt would be welcomed if he doesn’t take too much focus off of Indy. I would love to see Henry Sr. , but it would seem Sean Connery won’t be coming out of retirement any time soon. The two characters I’d really love to see are Marion and Sallah. Marion was such a pleasure to see in Crystal Skull, but she should have been given more. I’d like to see her utilized further in the fifth movie. Sallah, on the other hand, was greatly missed this last time around. I would love to see John Rhys-Davies return in the fifth Indiana Jones movie, and preferably as more than just a cameo.

Finally, in regards to the action in the fifth Indy movie, obviously I want to see more. Just keep it as close to plausible as possible. Keeping the CGI to a minimum would help in this case. Mutt swinging through the trees was so implausible that it took me out of the movie experience. And please, return to the super-natural tones of the first three films. The aliens, inter-dimensional beings or whatever they were just didn’t feel like a good fit for the Indiana Jones series.

Eventually, the Indiana Jones series featuring Harrison Ford will come to an end. My wish is for everyone involved to end it on the highest note possible. Crystal Skull featured many things I enjoyed, but I still feel there is at least one more great adventure awaiting us. With Harrison Ford in his mid-sixties we can’t wait another seventeen years for the next sequel.

So my wish is that before the end of 2009, we get the official confirmation that at least one more Indiana Jones film will arrive within the next three years.

Uh oh.

Harrison Ford spoke with the LA Times today revealing that George Lucas is thinking up a story for the next installment to the Indiana Jones franchise. Harrison says:

“It’s crazy but great”

Well I for one, think the opposite.

It’s not crazy because Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made a ton of money. George Lucas likes said money and likes continuing his two biggest franchises (even if they are getting worse by doing so).

It’s also not great because Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the worst of the four movies in the series, and I can’t imagine another one being much better then the last. Look at where we were left off – with a marriage, a kid called “Mutt”, and aliens… the more I repeat that and think that this is Indiana Jones and all of that actually happened… I want to hit my head on the desk. It wasn’t an awful movie by any means, but I didn’t think it was great either.

On the bright side, Harrison Ford said that he is against doing an animated Indiana Jones.

“I’d hate to see it reduced in any way from the movies that we have done and the way we have done them.”

The key word being “reduced.” I wish he said this before The Clone Wars came out. That being said, the fact that that was animated was the least of its problems.

As much as I love the original Indy trilogy, I don’t think George currently has the right target audience in mind. We all saw what happened with the Star Wars prequels and then, even unimaginably worse, with The Clone Wars. It seems there’s not been much credit given to what once was and why it was so successful for all age groups in the past. There’s a reason everyone loves the original Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies and why its not the same with the newer versions.

Why can’t we get the quality of old? It seems they’re just running through the motions now that they have a massive brand name and audience. As long as it’s called Indiana Jones starring Harrison Ford, here comes a half-billion dollar paycheck.

In a previous Screen Rant article, Jamie posed a question about the possibility of an Indiana Jones 5. In it, he brings up the point that money does talk. A lot of people thought upon hearing of the fourth installment, that it would be the final sendoff of the character. But no, if the character is alive, and the movies bring in a fortune then of course there will be a sequel. He also brings up the important point that even if a movie is hated, it can still make tons (i.e. Spider-Man 3, The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Carribean 3). Oh and look, ALL of those movies have prequels/sequels coming out.

It’s too bad these big movies are about quantity over quality. An Indy 5 would no doubt make a huge profit. I predict however, that it will make less than the previous simply because there are many disappointed fans out there now.

We have absolutely no information on story, cast or anything and I’m already a little worried. I would love to see the franchise end on a high note and return to its roots in terms of style. How about you?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on DVD and Blu-ray hits shelves on October 14th. Heath McKnight: Obsessive Iron Man fan

Before I start my little op-ed about Iron Man and The Dark Knight, I want you all to know that Iron Man is indeed my favorite character. I had him tattooed on my right forearm almost five years ago, and Entertainment Weekly even featured me as their “Obsessive Fan of the Week” last year! I write for Advanced Iron (the #1 Iron Man fan site on the planet), and my love for the character stretches back over 20 years.

That said, Batman is my second favorite character (tied with Captain America), and Batman Begins was, for the longest time not only my favorite comic book movie, but one of my top 20 favorite films of all time. The Dark Knight somehow topped Batman Begins, and completely blew me away. It deserves all the money and (hopefully) awards it has (or will) earn.

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, I want to spend a little time talking about why, ultimately, I love Iron Man more than The Dark Knight. Understand that while I think TDK is a magnificent movie, and the musical score is infinitely better than the pedestrian soundtrack of Iron Man – ol’ Shell Head’s film wins the race (but only by a little bit).

So why do I love Iron Man more? I recently sat down, and thought about the best movies I’ve seen this past summer, and I was hard-pressed in deciding whether Iron Man or TDK was better – or if they were a tie for me. Due to a busy work schedule this summer, I could only see each movie once, but you know I’ll wear the DVDs out when they’re released. I could also watch only a handful of films, but I hear that Indiana Jones 4 stunk anyway.

So after thinking about both, even going so far as comparing stories (both are aces) and direction (two veteran indie filmmakers doing their best work).

Acting: Tie – you can’t get better than Robert Downey, Jr. and Heath Ledger.

Visual FX: Iron Man.

Music: The Dark Knight.

Villains: Sorry, Iron Monger, but Heath’s Joker scared the crap out of me, and he deserves an Oscar.

Cinematography: Matthew Libatique (Iron Man) and Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight) are both tops in their field, but I give the slight edge to Libatique.

Overall fun factor for me: Iron Man wins by the narrowest of margins.

After all that, I came to the conclusion that Iron Man was the best film.

What ultimately got me to that conclusion was my good friend, comic book creator Rich Koslowski. He is the creator of The 3 Geeks, and he recently commented on his blog:

“I did love it [The Dark Knight, but] I still liked Iron Man better. And the one main reason I think is that Iron Man was more well-rounded. Iron Man had the one thing the The Dark Knight did not… joy.”

That’s exactly what I was mulling over: joy. Don’t get Rich or I wrong, we both love the dark aspects of Batman (don’t EVER lose that and don’t EVER hire Joel Shumacher EVER again!), but we went for the “light” with Iron Man.

So there you have it. Even though I am a big-time Iron Maniac, had the movie stunk, or had it been just decent-to-good, TDK would’ve won, hands down. Trust me, I love Iron Man the character, but I don’t love being let down. I learned that years ago, when I’d get excited for upcoming movies, much like sports fans would get pumped up for the big game, only to be disappointed when the film opened (Jurassic Park being the exception). And believe me, I was obsessing about both of these films.

For me, ultimately, I just loved watching Iron Man fly around, dispatching bad guys. But don’t forget that I absolutely loved The Dark Knight. It and Iron Man are the top two best comic book movies I’ve ever seen and I can’t wait to watch both films at least two dozen times on DVD before the year ends.

And one more thing: I think it’s great that TDK made over $520 million, and Iron Man, a minor, not-as-well-known Marvel superhero made more money than Indy 4. No one expected Iron Man to do as well as it did, but it certainly did.

I can’t wait for the next Iron Man and Batman films.

Movie reboots: What worked, what didn't, and a look at what might be coming soon

As we all know, Hollywood is the epicenter of not only fads, but also <del>ripping off</del> copying what works from other studios. We’ve all seen this before many times. One studio puts out a successful movie in some genre and within 6-9 months we see a bunch of movies coming out trying to capitalize on the popularity of the first one.

This phenomenon really took off in the early 1980s, with movies like Star Wars launching a new era in Sci-Fi films (yes, I know Star Wars was released prior to 1980), Superman starting the superhero movie trend, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street giving us the wonderful teen horror genre (at least they were rated R back then). Rambo started the lone hero with enemies that were lousy shots and couldn’t kill him even with machine guns and Porky’s gave us the start of the raunchy high school comedy.

So I suppose it was only appropriate, and a matter of time before Hollywood, bereft of new ideas, decided to re-visit those old gold mines to search for a fresh vein to tap. But now we’re not doing remakes any more… oh no – now the big buzzword is: Reboot.

The first recent film to tackle this concept (and succeed) was Batman Begins in 2005. Warner Bros. took a once successful franchise that had been ruined utterly and completely by descending into tongue in cheek, replete with nipples on the Bat-Suit. As we all know, director Chris Nolan exceeded everyone’s expectations and cleansed our palates of the abomination that was foisted upon us by Joel Schumacher.

Warner Bros. followed this success with Superman Returns, which while it was profitable, was a disappointment to many, and didn’t really “reboot” the franchise. It seems like the next Superman film may actually try to do that (again). We also had the rejuvenation of the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale, which gave us Daniel Craig as the closest thing to the early days of the series and Sean Connery.

The Incredible Hulk reboot didn’t go as well as planned for a variety of reasons including poor marketing and internal conflicts.

So now that the studios have seen that it’s possible to do a reboot well (as opposed to recent failures like Planet of the Apes and The Pink Panther), the reboot trend is moving full steam ahead. Interestingly, the main target for source material seems to the very same era I mentioned above: the 1980s (give or take a couple of years).

Now technically some of the projects haven’t been reboots – a similar trend that’s emerging is to create an additional sequel to a movie franchise that ended 20 years ago. An example of this was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – which while successful, was not as huge a hit as Paramount had been hoping for. The fact that the term “Nuke the fridge” has entered the vernacular has more than a little to do with it, I’m quite sure.

On the “delayed” sequel front we also had Bruce Willis returning as John McClane in Live Free or Die Hard (aka Die Hard 4). While that was controversial due to dropping the rating from the usual R to a PG-13, it did well at the box office and was fairly well-received. We also had not one but two Sylvester Stallone sequels: Rambo and Rocky Balboa, both of which kicked butt IMHO.

Projects ready to hit the screen next year include J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and McG’s Terminator 4. Other “dust off the concept” movies that are in the works include Child’s Play, Hellraiser, Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop 4.

So this got me thinking… what movie reboots/delayed sequel possibilities are out there that haven’t been tapped yet? Now I’m not saying this is a good idea – I’m just saying that I’m betting there are “scriptments” floating around Hollywood for these well-known franchises.

Whether they get made before this trend runs out, I don’t know – but if they DO, you heard it here first.

Here’s the list, in no particular order:

1. Smokey and the Bandit (1977)

Here’s the movie that made both Burt Reynolds and Sally Field stars and beloved by the public. Just a fun, against the establishment, redneck fun movie.

Logic: Are you kidding me? With Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice-Presidential pick and the whole Liberal vs Conservative angst, the timing for a new version of this couldn’t be better!

2. Crocodile Dundee (1986)

This is the movie that made Aussie Paul Hogan a star. With his low key charm and self-confidence, he became and instant audience favorite. It spawned a sequel which wasn’t bad, but in 2001 they did a third movie which was a stinker.

Logic: Someone needs to make a casting trip to Australia to find a new Dundee – shouldn’t be too difficult… Australia seems to have a good supply of “manly men.”

3. Home Alone (1990)

The original starring Macaulay Culkin and directed by Chris Columbus is a classic. There was one sequel and a failed attempt at a reboot back in 1997.

Logic: It’s been 11 years since the last one, so you know that someone out there thinks “if we could only find the right child actor” they could make a go of this one again.

4. Back to the Future (1985)

Another beloved series, which starred Michael J. Fox and was directed by Robert Zemeckis. While the first two were great, the third left a bit to be desired.

Logic: Yes, this one should remain untouched, but it’s got a brand name, was a big hit for its time and I can just see some new spin on this (no doubt with characters that are annoying instead of endearing).

5. Revenge of the Nerds (1984)

Having been pretty nerdy myself at the time this originally came out, I thought it was hysterical. As usual, the sequels got progressively weaker.

Logic: You could almost argue that with the unending string of teen comedies, this is unnecessary. Well, yeah, it IS unnecessary – but remember we have a known title plus lazy screenwriters (no, not ALL of them, but we know they’re out there).

6. Rambo (1982)

Logic: Considering the fact that we just had a sequel, maybe some bright-eyed exec will think it’s time to re-cast this with a younger actor. Instead of a Vietnam vet I’m sure they’d be happy to use a black-ops Iraq war veteran as the hero.

7. Porky’s (1982)

If memory serves, this was the first really raunchy high school comedy (yeah, we had Animal House but that was college, big difference, right? RIGHT?).

Logic: See #5.

8. Mad Max (1980)

Mad Max was a little film that gave us the first big screen appearance of Mel Gibson (dubbed horribly with an American voice). Immediate cult classic -spawned two sequels, one good, one not so much.

Logic: You could almost argue that a reboot has been attempted already with this year’s clunker Doomsday. But it’s not really a reboot unless they use the original title.

9. Rocky (1976)

Logic: Similar to #6, Rambo and the same logic applies.

10. Lethal Weapon (1987)

The original team-up of Mel Gibson as the manic cop and Danny Glover was awesome. Again, each subsequent film was not as good as the one before.

Logic: While there have been many “buddy cop” movies since this one, again we have the “Lethal Weapon” brand name. Definitely reboot material – PLEASE do not bring Glover and Gibson back for this.

Well there you have it: The top 10 candidates for the movie reboot treatment.

So what do you think – do you have any that should be added to the list, or ideas for how any of these should play out?

Thanks to DenOfGeek for sparking some ideas.

Did your favorite 2008 summer movie make the list? Find out!

It’s almost September and that means that the big summer movie season of 2008 is finally over – but what a summer it’s been!

2008 delivered the kind of summer that superhero and action movie geeks dream of – this is the year that brought us three bonafide superhero movies: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and what was that third one… oh yeah: The Dark Knight.

We also had the chance to see the long awaited Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the latest Pixar flick Wall-E, Will Smith as a superhero in Hancock, Angelina Jolie as an assassin in Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. To keep us laughing we had Tropic Thunder, The Pineapple Express (which I haven’t seen) and Get Smart.

Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight: Summer 2008 box office winner

The Dark Knight was this summer’s box office juggernaut, and no doubt will be the year’s biggest earner. The big surprise of the summer (and the film that kicked it all off) is Iron Man, which came in second and actually beat Indy 4 in the US! That speaks to both how great Iron Man was and how poor an addition the latest Indiana Jones movie was to the original trilogy.

Iron Man: Surprise hit of the 2008 Summer movie season

Here are the top ten movies this summer based on US box office:

The Dark Knight – $493.7MM

Iron Man – $317.6MM

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – $315.3MM

Hancock – $226.5MM

Wall-E – $216.8MM

Kung Fu Panda – $213MM

Sex and the City (yeah, I know) – $152.4MM

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – $141.6MM

The Incredible Hulk – $134.4MM

Wanted – $133.8MM

One big suprise in the above list is Pixar’s Wall-E: I’m really shocked that the R-rating-pushing, PG-13 and mediocre (according to most critics) Hancock actually beat the family friendly Pixar film. Also surprising is that Kung Fu Panda made almost as much as the Wall-E. It looks like despite the universally rave reviews for Wall-E, that the overly message-heavy plot of the movie wasn’t as much of a winner with families as other of their films like The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. Heck, even Cars (considered by many to be Pixar’s weakest film) made more money than Wall-E at the box office.

Wall-E: Below Summer box office expectations?

I’ll take a moment to toot my own horn and point out that I was one of the lone voices pointing out the fact that Wall-E was too heavy handed with its messages.

Also, despite the “cool factor,” Wanted didn’t manage to beat underdog summer flick The Incredible Hulk. I guess more people thought it was ridiculous (as I did) than thought it was “awesome, dude!”. However superhero movie fans across the land can weep in unison at the fact that Hulk was not able to defeat three hip, New York City powershopping babes on the prowl for true love.

Summer 2008: The Incredible Hulk did not go down without a fight

How the heck Sex in the City made into that list is beyond me.

Movies worth noting that are missing from that top 10 list include The Happening (huge stinker for Shyamalan), The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (couldn’t bring myself to watch it), 10,000 B.C. (do I even need to comment on this one?), Speed Racer (LSD trip for kids), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (too niche, I suppose).

In the “bombed at the box office” category I guess I’d add X-Files: I Want to Believe ($20.7MM) and at only $27MM since opening, for a Star Wars movie, I’d say The Clone Wars didn’t do too well.

All in all I’d say it’s been a pretty damned awesome summer for movie fans, and it’ll be a tough one to top in 2009.

Summer is now drawing to a close, the last of the big blockbusters of the season have been released and we are slowly moving into awards territory again.

Don’t worry – there are plenty of films to keep us entertained.

In this Weekend Movie News Wrap Up we look at why Simon Pegg isn’t an Inglorious Bastard, we see the return of Candyman, Conan gets rewritten, we check out the details of the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull DVD and we have a look at some more images from Watchmen.

1. Simon Pegg was almost in Inglorious Bastards. Almost. The Shaun of the Dead star was close to signing on to the WWII film, but he had to retreat because of scheduling conflicts.

Pegg had this to say on his Myspace page:

“Much to our mutual disappointment, I won’t be appearing in QT’s forthcoming Inglorious Bastards due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties. We really tried to make it work but in the end, it just was not possible without severe ramifications elsewhere.”

“I’m trying to remain upbeat, as Tom Selleck said “Who the hell is Indiana Jones anyway?”

Pegg also informs us that Superbad director Greg Mottola will be helming Paul, his next film with Nick Frost.

Sources: Simon Pegg

2. Another week, another horror remake! This week it’s Candyman’s turn.

Shock Till You Drop has learned that Sony is in the planning stages of remaking the Tony Todd terror flick. The original was based on Clive Barker short story The Forbidden, and it spawned two follow-ups.

No word on casting or writer yet, but don’t expect Todd to return.

Now if they could only fit in that Christina Aguilera track to make it extra scary.

Source: Shock Till You Drop

3. Will we ever see Conan again on the big screen? Maybe, but I might be old and grey by the time it happens. Heck, I could be dead – but we won’t even go there!

Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain writers of the forthcoming Outlander are the latest scribes to be hired to take on a script for Conan’s return.

If I hit the gym now I could be in with a chance of being Conan. It’s an idea!

Source: Hollywood Reporter

4. There have been a few more images from Watchmen released. They’re pretty cool. Here’s one image – head over to Joblo to see three more.

I’m currently reading Watchmen for the first time. I know, I know… twenty years late – but I have to be prepped for the movie!

Would you plunk down your cash to see another Indiana Jones movie?

Buddy of mine and I were chatting last week when Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was brought up. We both liked it despite its many flaws and what not. Then, he quips, “Yeah, they’ll definitely do another one…”

That remark threw me back a bit. “Really? You think?” I replied. He went on to say that “it’s all about money, Jamie!” Well…he’s not wrong.

Indy IV has made well over $215 million domestically and just under $500 million worldwide in its first two weeks in theatres.

When everything’s said and done, whether you loved or hated it, the film stands to earn around $600-$700 million worldwide give or take.

The question is, “Do people want to see more Indy?”

You can’t answer that solely on box-office because frankly there are films that audiences hated that were nonetheless box-office blockbusters (i.e. Spider-Man 3, The Da Vinci Code, The Matrix sequels, etc.)

I can tell you from my own personal experience seeing Indy IV on its opening Thursday night screening. All I heard from people as I left the theatre was how much they enjoyed the film and “would totally see it again.”

Of course a few weeks back, George Lucas was already talking about the possibility of another installment saying:

“I haven’t even told Steven [Spielberg] or Harrison this but I have an idea to make Shia LaBeouf [who plays Mutt] the lead character next time and have Harrison come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie [Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade]. I can see it working out.”

I was under the impression that this was going to be Indy’s last hurrah on the silver screen. I mean Spielberg, Lucas and Ford have said multiple times they were doing Crystal Skull for the fans and not the money.

Wouldn’t audiences feel jerked around to suddenly see Mutt Williams (aka Henry Jones III aka Spielberg’s golden boy Shia LaBeouf) wearing the fedora and leather jacket instead of Indy again? I know I would. No offense, Shia.

So, what do you guys think? Will we see an Indiana Jones 5, a Mutt spin-off film or will Spielberg and Lucas leave the character alone?

Who REALLY had the best opening weekend - Iron Man or Indiana Jones?

I’m not big on reporting box office numbers here at Screen Rant, but I found this comparison pretty interesting: Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull barely beat Iron Man opening weekend for opening weekend.

I really thought that Indy would smoke the armored one as far as opening weekend box office – Indiana Jones has huge name recognition, anticipation over being a return to the series after 19 years, big name star Harrison Ford, current flavor of the month Shia Lebouf and an outstanding legacy behind it.

On the other hand Iron Man was a relatively unknown Marvel Comics character being played by Robert Downey Jr, not exactly known as a big box office draw.

So how do they compare?

In it’s opening weekend (Friday through Sunday) Iron Man brought in $98.6MM. The current estimate for Indy 4 for its opening Friday – Sunday numbers is… $101 million.

Now the problem here is that it’s really hard to do a fair comparison because Indiana Jones opened on midnight Wednesday and many hard core fans of the series saw it between then and Friday morning. On its opening Thursday Indy did $25 million.

Another interesting number is that the average gross per theater over the opening weekend was very close for both these movies, with Iron Man averaging about $8,000 and Indy, $7900. That to me is again, surprising. I thought a lot more people would pack the theaters for Indiana Jones than would have Iron Man on its opening weekend. Ah – but are the per audience numbers really that close? According to Fantasy Moguls, while Indy opened at only 155 more theaters than Iron Man, it was shown on TWICE as many screens: 9,500!

Although I know that Indy will go on to make huge dollars (it’s already earned an estimated $297MM worldwide) I really thought it would open much stronger here in the states, and would just completely blow away Iron Man’s numbers. BTW, our armored avenger has so far earned close to $486 million worldwide so far!).

Finally, Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull, while earning a ton of opening weekend money, did not manage to break any existing box office records.

Interesting stuff…

Here's another take on the latest Indiana Jones movie.

Short version: While very enjoyable overall, there are some things about it that are incredibly annoying and could have been easily corrected.

I’m going to presume that you have already seen this film before you read this review. It’s pretty filled with spoliers, so be warned!

I don’t think that I have to talk about how much I love Indiana Jones, or how much I’ve been looking forward to this fourth instalment in the franchise. You all ready know, and if you don’t – then why haven’t you been reading Screen Rant before this?

George Lucas is a personal hero of mine, the man comes under a lot of fire from movie fans, but I have stood firmly beside the quiffed, plaid shirted wonder for years, and I can even defend the Star Wars prequels. If it’s possible I’ve been looking forward to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull more than the last three Star Wars movies – mainly because I didn’t feel that they’d have the same magic as the originals because Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher wouldn’t be on the cast list. I had no such worries with Indiana Jones – Ford would be back, and to me, that made me want to see this new movie.

When it the film was first announced, Spielberg, Lucas and Frank Marshall stated that they’d be doing this “the old fashioned way” with minimal CGI, and that Janusz Kaminski would be kept on a tight leash, and he wouldn’t be using his “white-out” style of cinematography. Recently I’ve become more and more irked by Kaminski’s work, and I was glad that he wouldn’t be blasting white light towards the camera.

I was even happy with the signing of Shia LaBeouf as Indy Jr.: he bears a passing resemblance to Ford, and I knew that they’d be going for a younger audience, so I could make peace with his signing (if only Sean Connery could have come on-board for a cameo). Crystal skulls, science fiction and the 1950’s didn’t worry me; it was good that Ford was playing his age, and I’ve always been happy with the Indy stories, so it didn’t worry me that it wouldn’t involve religious artifacts. I was just ready for Indy.

I couldn’t see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on it’s opening few days, but I was happy enough to see it opening weekend. I sat in the cinema waiting, and then the Lucasfilm logo came on screen.

I have to say, I enjoyed the film. It wasn’t mind-blowing, but it was a highly enjoyable action film – Ford was on fire, the wit, the movements, the actions – it’s the best he’s been in years. He even seems to have been working on his comedy.

The opening sequence brought Indy back to us after 19 years and he’s still got it. During the whip-driven action sequence Harrison quips: “I thought that was closer.” I was grinning from ear to ear. With the scene in the nuclear town where Indy realizes that the bomb is going to go off is just brilliant – the look of panic and tearful desperation is outstanding – some of the best 5 minutes of cinema I think I’ve seen.

Even when the bomb goes off – the refrigerator gag – far fetched I know, but it was still cool. Also the fact the the mushroom cloud mirrored the crystal skull – great. I was impressed that the debriefing by the F.B.I. echoed Dr.No, a nice nod to Connery. The chase through Marshall College cool, not as good as other reviews will have you believe, but still a good opening romp.

The graveyard scene with the strange tree dwellers was great, a fantastic sequence that added a nice horror dimension and when Indy and Marion meet for the first time in years – outstanding!

I also really enjoyed the quicksand sequence. I’ve always wanted to see Indy encounter quicksand, and I finally did. It was fun and thrilling.

Now what I didn’t like..

Kaminski: If ever a man shouldn’t be allowed behind a camera – it’s that man. The jungle chase alone – while the weakest part of the film, was hindered even further by his light blasting through the trees.

The CGI alone was bad enough, don’t tell me you’re going to use minimal CGI and then stick in something that looks like a deleted scene from Star Wars Episode 1. The LaBeouf fight scene was just too much, if you can do it practical – do it. If you can’t, leave it alone.

Then there were the crotch hits. George – I know that was you. Humour is good, but not in a scene like that.

Tarzan LaBeouf: This sequence is the single worst part of the movie. I thought Lucas got his Tarzan fixation out of his system with the Wookies in Episode III. The worst 30 seconds in the movie.

Overall there was just too much CGI, and to me computer effects equal no emotion.

The ending of the film, while enjoyable, was just too much like National Treasure. Don’t get me wrong, I like National Treasure, but this is Indiana Jones! The Mayan tribes were under-used, and killed off way too easy by the Russians.

Another general issue that I had was there was a bit too much stage work trying to be passed off as exteriors. This was most notable in the opening Area 51. I mean how hard is it to shoot in the desert? Not very – especially when you have got $150 million to spend.

Overall, despite my nit-picks I really enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. It sounds like I didn’t as I re-read this, but I am just being honest. As a hardcore Indy and Lucas fan, I could just gloss over these, but then I wouldn’t be doing my job.

Was it was good as the originals? No way, but I didn’t expect it to be. I was disappointed in the large amount of (poor) CGI, and Kaminski’s camera work, but everyone did what was expected of them, and as things go, it was a four star summer film.

Screen Rant writer Jamie Williams came up with a great and timely idea. With all of us here being hard core movie fanatics and a new Indiana Jones movie debuting this week – he suggested that we each share our most significant memories related to the Indiana Jones movies.

This is going to be a long one because I couldn’t bring myself to edit any of my guys’ memories.

First, from our most ardent supporter of the upcoming Indy movie, Niall Browne:

“Growing up I always knew that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were friends. I don’t know where I learned this fact – but I always knew it. I probably figured it out from the credits of the Indiana Jones movies, after all this was a time before the internet and media based television shows. Lucas has always been one of my heroes – and despite what a lot of people think – I have a tremendous amount of respect for the man.”

“To people of a certain age – men of a certain age, Harrison Ford is an icon. He is Indiana Jones, he is Han Solo – these legendary roles made him a role model to boys around my age. I don’t remember the first time that I saw an Indiana Jones film, but the earliest memory that I have about Indiana Jones is from around the time Temple of Doom was released – that would be 1984 – I was four years old. I saw the film at the cinema, and although I have a very fuzzy recollection of the events, my parents tell me that I loved the experience.”

“The strongest memory that I have of the franchise is of the Last Crusade, being a huge James Bond fan – it was a nine year old’s dream to have Ford and Sean Connery in one film. Even today Last Crusade is my favorite film in the series – from the religious artifact to the relationship with his father, the Jones boys remind me very much of my dad and me. Sentimental I know, but that’s the power of cinema.”

“Over the years there have been hundreds of Indiana Jones rumors, one that I always hoped for was that Kevin Costner would play Indy’s evil younger brother. This was never to be, a shame but the reality of things. I got to the point where I honestly never believed that they would make a fourth Indiana Jones film. I couldn’t see it happening, I thought that they would talk about it and write numerous scripts, but that I would never see a new movie. Man, I’m glad that I’m wrong!”

“Indiana Jones has influenced me directly and indirectly throughout my life, even at University I studied archeology. It was however for a very brief moment as it clashed with my film classes. I had to decide that I could either become Indiana Jones or watch him. I made a choice for the latter. I could never be that cool! I even studied Medieval literature at College – Arthurian legend, the Holy Grail – a nod to Sean Connery’s character from The Last Crusade – a Medieval Literature Professor. Heck, even in my day job – I teach! If only it were – ‘Part Time.’”

“Now on the dawn of Indy’s return I’m excited. I’m as excited today writing this as I was nine years ago before the release of Star Wars: Episode I, I’m older now – but I still have that excited feeling that only George Lucas knows how to unleash. Will this fourth Indy adventure be as good as the previous efforts? I don’t think for a second that it will, but it’s making me feel nineteen years younger – and that is a miracle in itself.”

“Indiana Jones, I salute you.”

Next we have the guy who came up with the idea, Jamie Williams:

“To Hell with a fireman, ball-player or doctor, I wanted to be Indiana Jones ‘when I grew up.’”

“I can’t exactly point to where or how it started. The idea that he had dual personalities was always appealing to my young mind. By day, he’s a clean-cut, Clark Kent-type professor of archeology. But at night (or more appropriately in a far-away country), he was a rugged, unshaven adventure-seeker; a trait he always appeared to be more comfortable with in my opinion. But then again, maybe I’m reading too much into that. By the way, just where the Hell did Indy teach? If someone can point to me where, you get a cookie!”

“It becomes clear to me as an adult. As crazy as it sounds, we all wanted to be Indiana Jones because he was one of us. Sure, James Bond is cool and what not. But you can’t relate to a guy who always has the answer to his problem(s) stored away in a gadget from Q’s lab or one-liners perfectly quipped after killing his latest enemy. On the other hand, Indy was human. The guy bled when shot at, bruised when punched and was always having to think on his toes just as his adversaries were about to do him in.”

“I’m not gonna lie. There is a part of me that envies you readers old enough to remember seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark in theaters during the summer of 1981 and having your heads explode (i.e. alongside Belloq’s of course!) I just can’t fathom what that was like experiencing a film of that magnitude. [You'll find out in a minute - Vic] Surely, the opening ‘teaser’ with Indy retrieving the golden idol from the Peruvian jungle resulting in traps galore (including the iconic giant ball) was enough to satisfy audiences. But… there was even more to come within the remaining 115 minutes – i.e. among others, that amazing truck-chase sequence where Indy is going after the Ark.”

“Honest to God, there is just… no way to properly describe just what Raiders means to me as a film-lover. There was a period in my life as a child where I watched Raiders Non. Stop. I could quote you lines right outta the mouths of the characters and mime all the action set-pieces. Thus from an early age, I was born to be film nerd.”

“Its influence is evident in the blockbuster tentpoles you see nowadays from the likes of Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, Bryan Singer, Michael Bay, J.J. Abrams to name just a few off the top of my head. Young filmmakers who were just at the right age when Raiders opened furthered their own passion to make movies.”

“To this day, Raiders of the Lost Ark is the finest example of pop entertainment. Audiences will never get another film like that ever again no matter how great Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may be (which I certainly hope it is, mind you).

Ladies and germs, what I’m basically trying to say is… I still want to be Indiana Jones… when I grow up.

Here’s what contributor Heath McKnight had to say:

“I was very young when I discovered Indiana Jones. I loved Raiders, but was too young to appreciate it when I first saw it. Temple of Doom scared the crap out of me (I was 9 or 10 when I saw it in the 1980s, on HBO or a tape rental, yes we didn’t have DVDs or On Demand back then) with the scene of the guy ripping the dude’s heart out!”

“However, I was 13 when The Last Crusade came out in 1989, and it was a lot of fun! I couldn’t get enough of the film with its non-stop action, its comedy, Sean Connery (I wish he was in Crystal Skull), River Phoenix as a young Indy (I loved how he wasn’t afraid of snakes until he fell into the pit of snakes, then the hard cut to Harrison Ford as Indy), evil Nazis, the Biblical overtones, and more.”

“This was the Indy film I came to love, because I think I was old enough to appreciate almost everything in the movie. I caught it recently on TV (never the best way to watch a movie, least of all Indiana Jones), and watched it all over again. I also know many guys and gals in my age range of around 29 to 34, seem to like The Last Crusade the best.”

Let’s not forget our TV aficionado Bruce Simmons:

“From the Indiana Jones franchise, I developed an interest in exotic type weapons. Whips being the main influence from how I saw Indy wield his whip, I took up the hobby.”

“What did I learn? Whips do not anchor onto cross beams like the do in the movies.. [No, no broken bones or anything, just some subtle tests] Cracking a whip over your head at a target usually hurts your back very badly unless you learn the technique very carefully, which is very different from other angles of use like side-arming. Also: Whip cracking thrashes the end and you go through many whip-tips because the crack of a whip is the result of the tip creating a tiny sonic boom. Something about the tapered shape, transverse energy, recoil and forward motion of the energy.. (American Scientist) Regardless, IT HURTS if hit with it!!”

“My hobby then branched out to other exotic toys, such as boomerangs, bolos and other various farming instruments of old… Word from the wise: When learning the boomerang, you need lots of space, some sort of head wind would help, and really really good ears and lightning reflexes. [Yes, I have an interesting story to tell, but that's for some other day.]”

Finally, the impact that Indiana Jones had on me, Vic Holtreman, owner of Screen Rant…

It’s funny that Jamie mentions envying folks who are old enough to have experience Raiders of the Lost Ark at a movie theater when it first opened. I was pretty damned near the perfect age to appreciate that amazing movie when it opened in 1981. Back then I was 20 years old, and had come of age in the wonderful era of the resurgence of Sci Fi. I was in my teens when I saw Star Wars (before any “Episode” nonsense was tacked on to the title, and Han shot first) and that big, beautiful, never ending ship come over my head in that opening scene – 17 when I saw the nothing-like-it-ever-before Ridley Scott film Alien, and the best ever Star Wars film: The Empire Strikes back.

Back then Spielberg and Lucas were the wunderkind – young geniuses creating magical films destined to become classics for generations to come.

Now remember this was LONG before the internet – we actually had to get our movie information from magazines! Starlog Magazine was the go-to source for Sci-Fi movies at the time. That needs to be said so you can understand how I could have possibly walked into a screening for Raiders of the Lost Ark on opening night knowing absolutely nothing about it.

I was out with a couple of close friends and my sister (back then partner-in-crime and uber-movie-geek like myself) when we decided to go catch a movie at the last minute. We went to the local multiplex and bought tickets to this movie about a guy with a whip. It was so late that we ended up sitting in the front row.

I can tell you for a fact that my mouth never closed once during the entire movie. And the funny thing is, I realized at the time that I was watching something that would impact me for the rest of my life and would be a yardstick against which I would compare other films for years to come.

I just could not believe what I was watching – the movie grabbed me by the scruff of my neck, whipped me around and never let me go until the closing credits. The coolness of Ford as Indiana Jones in the opening reveal, his incredible self-assuredness as he navigated the traps in that first sequence, the skin-of-his-teeth escapes, not leaving behind his whip or his hat, the movie not giving me time to breathe before a giant rolling stone ball came after him… I mean it was bloody non-stop excitement the likes of which I don’t think I’ve experienced ever again, and that countless movies have tried to match without success.

It was pretty shattering to be met with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom after such an amazing experience. Trading the incredible Karen Allen for the whiny and annoying Kate Capshaw and that kid “Short Round.” I don’t know what the hell they were thinking.

Of course eventually we got Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which brought things back around in 1989, but by then the magic had started to wear off and I’d begun to get cynical about all things cinema.

You can talk all you want about CGI and modern special effects, but I truly think that there was no better time to be young and a movie fan than the period from about 1977 to 1989. Man, what a time that was. I’ll never forget it and if it wasn’t for those years you wouldn’t be reading this site today.

I may be hard on George Lucas now, but God bless him for his early work.

So what does Indiana Jones mean to you and how has it influenced your love of movies? We’d love to hear your stories!

The big question: Is 'Indy 4' awesome or lame? Here's your answer...

Short version: While it definitely had its moments and plenty of nods to the fans, there was also more ridiculousness than we’ve ever seen in an Indiana Jones film.

Ok, I’d really like an easy movie to review for a change…

Reviewing the first Indiana Jones movie to be released in 20 years and directed by Steven Spielberg is not something I take lightly. It’s no secret that I haven’t exactly been fired up for this film or a big cheerleader for it (our writer Niall has taken that upon himself here at Screen Rant), but I truly hoped it would be great even if I didn’t think it would be.

So was it awful? Of course not. But was it great? Unfortunately, no.

What it was is pretty ridiculous in more than a couple of places – but oh, how it tried to be awesome… (BTW, I tried to keep this review as spoiler free as possible.)

From the start it seemed like they were doing things right with the opening credits matching the style of the original Raiders of the Lost Ark, and with the Paramount logo fading into a similarly styled mound of dirt. However I actually cringed when the writers credit appeared and one of the two names was George Lucas.

It opened up on a scene out in the Nevada desert that established right away the time period of the film with a bunch of 1950’s teenagers out racing their 32 Ford painted with flames. They come upon a military convoy and a bit of a race ensues that although the movie has just started, seems weirdly out of place. Shortly thereafter the tone changes to classic Indiana Jones and I’ll admit that I got a bit of a rush from seeing the scene in the trailer where Harrison first picks up his hat in its full context.

This time the villains are Communist Russians instead of Nazis, and they too are after some artifact that will give them ultimate power. We end up at a very familiar storage facility the first test of whether Harrison Ford can still pull off the role kicks off.

Can he still don the fedora, leather jacket and whip respectably? Yes, indeed.

As a matter of fact he portrays the character quite well and with more confidence than Jones displayed in the previous three films. It works because it seems he’s been “adventuring” for the entire time that has passed since we’ve last seen him.

Despite his age, the sequences are almost believable and at the end of the scene we get to see just how “buff” Ford is in the film, making it a bit easier to suspend our disbelief.

The problem with the movie however is just how FAR we have to suspend reality. The Indy films, while fantastic in their own way, have always had some sort of connection to reality both in the action sequences and the mythic basis for the stories. But here there are scenes and plot ideas that just seem way too over the top for an Indiana Jones movie. One escape by him shortly after the scenes I just described is:

A. Stupid.

B. Looks like it belongs in a superhero movie via the implausibility of his having survived.

From there however it gets pretty decent again as we meet Shia Lebouf’s “young tough” character, who seeks out Dr. Jones in order to save his mother and older family friend. Shia does a very decent job in the film and is enjoyable to watch. They were wise to not write him as a wide-eyed “Indy Jr.” in training.

One of the enjoyable things about the film are the many “hat tips” to the earlier films that real fans of the first three films will notice. I’m pretty sure that repeat viewings will expose more that the viewer may miss the first time around. In once scene we see a familiar artifact, and in another there’s a funny role reversal regarding Indy’s and “Mutt’s” (yes, that’s the name of Shia’s character) escape from some bad guys which compares to a scene between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.

It was also great to see Karen Allen back in the familiar role. Of course she’s much older now but she still had that familiar sparkle. It’s too bad they didn’t make better use of her in the film.

There were a few moments that will charge you up, mainly due to the familiar John Williams music and the unique sound effects attached to anyone getting punched and the good old whip. But then there are other things that are laughable, and I don’t mean in a way that they intended to make you laugh. One of them involves Shia in the jungle (I won’t spoil it) and a big one is just who the mystery is about.

So in the end, will audiences like this? Yeah, I’m pretty sure they will. Should they have left well enough alone and not milked the franchise for another film? That’s a tougher question – I can see how it could have been really great and I would LOVE to know what the original screenplay for this was like. If they make another one and bring the action and story a bit more down to earth it might actually turn out even better than this one.

Just how big a box office weekend will Indiana Jones have?

Next week there’s a little film called Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull .

You may have heard of it.

If not you’re either just back from Mars or you’ve just woken up from a fifteen year coma.

Well we are almost there folks and I can’t wait – however I won’t be there on opening night – I’m checking out a screening of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist. I know, I know I should be at Indy – but that’s life!

However, you can bet your backside that I’ll be there on Friday night, popcorn in hand just like I was in 1989 when I watched The Last Crusade but enough about me – you want to know about Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones is going to be a hit, we all know that. It won’t be a hit like Speed Racer was going to be a hit, it will be a solid gold hit – a “blockbuster” in the true sense of the word.

In case you don’t know, before it became corrupted by the studio marketing folks the term “blockbuster” was a film that had people literally queued around the block – it was therefore busting the block. These days films are pitched as being blockbusters before they are filmed – they are just big budget films that the studios hope will be hits.

Anyway, how big a hit will Indy 4 be?

Some are saying “Star Wars” big!

Studio tracking for the film is running better for Indy than for Prince Caspian, a film that opens this weekend! Hollywood.com states that:

“Definite Interest for the new Indy is a staggering 63 percent, and it has an overall First Choice of 28 percent. This is all a way of saying that the movie cannot miss.”

The site predicts that the film will make between $41-$44 million, on Friday, $32-$34 million on Saturday and on Sunday it should ring up around $34-$36 million and then on Memorial Monday it might bank $22-$24million. Therefore the film’s total five day opening should be somewhere between $162 and $172 million.

Not a bad little earner.

This would have it beating George Lucas’ other little franchise film Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

What makes this even more amazing is that the Indiana Jones films haven’t had the huge fan base of the Star Wars films, but over the years the movies have become more and more iconic. I blame the Internet and people like me.

It’s not bad for a sequel considering that the last film in the franchise was released 19 years ago and it’s starring a 65 year old man who isn’t big with the young demographic!

It’s good that there is now an event film for “older” people, a film that has even my dad excited!

Let’s just hope that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is just as good as the previous three films and that my hard earned wages are well spent.

George, Harry and Steven – I’m not worried. I have faith.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens next Thursday – May 22. Like I needed to tell you!

At the Iron Man screening(s) I attended the new (and presumably, final) trailer for Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was shown, and I have to admit that I’m finally getting excited about this film. I just really hope that Spielberg and Lucas manage to re-capture the spirit of the original. The trailer at least, seems to do so.

Check out the brand new trailer below and see for yourself.

I think it looks great and I can’t express how happy I am at seeing Karen Allen back on the big screen playing the wonderful character of Marion Ravenwood from the original Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of my biggest disappointments with the series was when they came back with the sequel without her as the leading lady, and instead replacing her with the whiney character played by Kate Capshaw.

That was pretty much unforgivable as far as I’m concerned and to this day Temple of Doom remains my least favorite of the original trilogy.

But Indy 4? This one I’m finally looking forward to (happy now, Niall?).

Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull opens on May 22nd.

Another new image plus Harrison Ford talks about Indy as a character

While it’s hardly a barrage of publicity, there has been some movement on the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull publicity front.

The most important news is that Hollywood Elsewhere has allegedly discovered that the film’s running time will be 140 minutes (2 hours 20 minutes) – that’s a whole lot of Indy action.

The site also states that the film will be shown “internally” next week. I presume that internally will be Lucasfilm rather than Paramount Pictures (but, heck it could be both), also that the film will be going to the printers so that the final print can be ready for the Cannes launch.

USA Today has also published an interview with the world’s second most famous carpenter (the first being Jesus Christ, the third being Tim Allen in Home Improvement, but let’s not go there).

To find out more and see a larger version of that picture you’re going to have to keep reading. You knew that of course…

The USA Today interview is pretty cool, here are the highlights:

Harrison Ford says that Indy develops as a character in the films:

“He’s a guy who is pretty clear from the beginning. He has not changed so much between films. But we’ve learned more about him, through various plot devices, such as the introduction of his father. And we’ll learn something more about him in this film. I think it’s required. If you’re going to bring back a character, you’ll have to supply the audience with something more and different. The adventure is very, very important. But it’s interesting to discover a facet of the character that perhaps you hadn’t explored before”

It wasn’t difficult to get back into character:

“It’s as though you put on that hat, the leather jacket, the bag, the whip, the gun — or even the schoolteacher’s suit — and it comes back to you.”

On the chances of him retiring:

“I think I might decide to do other things, but I think it’s a ways down the line. I’m still having as much fun and taking as much pleasure, and I’m as intellectually stimulated by the process, as I ever was.”

Oh, and he also said something about doing a fifth Indiana Jones film, but there isn’t a direct quote on that… I wonder why.

Like I said, there’s nothing earth shattering here…but it is Indiana Jones and considering that the film is just over a month away – I’ll take what I can get.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens May 22.

Why is marketing for Indy 4 almost non-existent?

There is an R.Dean Taylor song called Indiana Wants Me, well I want Indiana!

We are just over a month away from the movie event of the year- no- not Iron Man- we’re talking Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

It could well be the highest grossing film of the year as it pretty much ticks the box on every demographic, however the hype machine seems non-existent considering that the film opens on May 22.

It looked like the marketing machine had kicked into gear earlier in the week when Collider got its hands on what was believed to be a new teaser poster for the Harrison Ford starrer. However the poster tuned out to be a fan made fake.

However, Amazon now have the soundtrack available for pre-order, and guess what?

They published the spoiler filled tracklisting on the site. Whoops.

Continue reading for my analysis of the lack of hype and the soundtrack listing.

Be warned though, spoilers!

Most of Iron Man seems to been shown due to the trailers and the amount of film clips that have been released, but Indiana Jones seems to be flying in under the radar.

Does this mean that the film is bad?
Have a reality check would you! There’s no way that this film is going to be bad.

I believe that the reasons for the lack of Indiana Jones publicity are two-fold:

1. George Lucas does not want to over hype the film. I think that Lucas realized that he got burned after the huge marketing push over Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and he doesn’t want the same thing to happen with Dr Jones.

2. This baby doesn’t need to be hyped. Whilst people like me are willing to write about it and fans are willing to produce fake posters there is no need for Lucasfilm and Paramount to spend marketing bucks. Everyone knows that this movie is coming and come May young and old alike will be sitting in a darkened theatre watching the fourth instalment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

Here’s that fake poster- pretty cool- but it just looks too clean. Or something.

Now, for the the spoilers.

Are you sure?

Positive?

Last chance!

Okay- but don’t say that I didn’t warn you!

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Amazon- you gotta love ‘em. In fact many years ago I worked as a customer service guy for the company and…

Okay- I know that you don’t want my life story and that what you really want is the Indy track list- so here you go:

1. Raiders March
2. Call of the Crystal
3. The Adventures of Mutt
