(NOTE: We first published this a few years ago, but have dusted it off in honor of Men in Black 3 (read our review).
I’d only be half-kidding if I were to say that 75% of the time that a new leading man role is announced, I hear at least three people in our comment sections nominating Will Smith for the part. In fact, in my line of work I hear the name “Will Smith” mentioned so many times that it’s becoming something of a neurotic tick in my brain. Now that Men in Black 3 is here, Smith’s name has resurfaced once again in the cultural zeitgeist.

This week:

Travolta and Pacino’s Gotti film bites the dust; Will Smith is the $50 million man – at least on Independence Day; Charlie Sheen is Charles Swan III and Sean Penn as well as Robert De Niro team for The Comedian.

1. Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father has been “put on hold”. The film which was set to star John Travolta, Al Pacino, Kelly Preston and Ben Foster has apparently hit a major financial stumbling block. Producer Marc Fiore was unable to raise the cash to pay the film’s stars and the director, Barry Levinson. The film was set to start shooting in January, but almost no pre-production work had been done – a major no-no for a project of this type.

Gotti has had many problems since it was announced, an October ...

Click to continue reading Movie News Wrap Up: October 29th, 2011

In honor of the devastation Jonathan Liebesman's 'Battle: Los Angeles' is set to inflict on the box office, we count down our picks for the top film disasters that left L.A. in ruins.

Battle: Los Angeles is one of the most anticipated films of Spring 2011 – promising a city-wide devastation of the iconic L.A. area. While the film is largely expected to forgo on-the-nose references to famous L.A. landmarks, in favor of a more Dark Knight-like realism, the movie is still set to present one of the biggest beatings the iconic West Coast city has ever endured.

In honor of Hollywood’s obsession with trashing their home-turf, we thought it’d be fun to countdown the best L.A. movie disasters and give credit to each categorical source of destruction – based on how successful he, she, they, or it, were at pummeling the “City of Angels” into rubble.

A few rules before we get started:

A) Only one movie per “source” of destruction.

B) The disaster has to ...

Click to continue reading Destruction: Los Angeles: The 5 Best L.A. Movie Disasters

20th Century Fox released a handful of cool posters to celebrate their 75th anniversary. Classics hover over the famous logo with a golden hue even an Oscar would be jealous of.

20th Century Fox is celebrating its 75th anniversary and published some beyond-cool altered logo posters using some of their most classic movies. The studio is showing off the beautiful work on the front page of an anniversary-specific website and it jumps out at you with stunning color. Only hours after posting a lazy Iron Man 2 poster, we are proud to present these beautiful odes to movie genres.

You may actually disagree with some of the choices to represent certain genres, as they are suggested on the bottom of each poster. Be that as it may, they are awesome and look great. No complaints are justified and I want all of these in my apartment.

The movies honored include: Walk The Line, The Day The Earth Stood Still, ...

Click to continue reading Awesome 20th Century Fox 75th Anniversary Posters

It's still just a rumor, but Fox is said to be throwing money Will Smith's way for two back-to-back 'Independence Day' sequels. Is it really going to happen this time?

[Update: Now come claims that Smith is NOT involved with the ID4 sequels]

Remember last fall when we learned Fox was stalling on an Independence Day sequel because of money? Well, it seems the studio’s little Christmas release, Avatar, has made a few extra million dollars to be thrown around. And one of the places that money is set to go is in Will Smith’s wallet for not one but two Independence Day sequels.

According to IESB via an uncorroborated tip, Fox plans to shoot the films back to back, though it’s unclear how far apart they’ll be released.

Still just a rumor at this point, the incentive is certainly there for Fox to finally move forward with this project. Smith, on the other hand, has around two thousand other projects to choose from, but maybe more ...

Click to continue reading Fox Approaching Will Smith For Independence Day Sequels?
We reported last month that the reason we haven’t seen a sequel to the mega successful sci-fi blockbuster, Independence Day, is because 20th Century Fox is apparently stalling because of money. Personally, even if the first film’s star, Will Smith, would demand a hefty paycheck to return, I still see an Independence Day sequel making insane bank, even after the cost of a crazy marketing campaign (see director Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster flick, 2012).

Having said that, on the creative front at least it seems that Emmerich would love to do another one. And to further that, he recently spoke with MTV about doing an Independence Day 2, and said that it might even be split into two films (or perhaps he means just two separate films, one following the other’s story). Emmerich told MTV:

Disaster film director, Roland Emmerich, may have been busy recently making his latest tale of destruction, 2012, but that doesn’t stop him from thinking ahead (or backwards, depending on how you look at it). A sequel to his mammoth, $800 million worldwide success that was 1996′s Independence Day (or “ID4″) has apparently been in the cards for ages now. Back in 2004, an outline script was even written by screenwriter Dean Devlin and Emmerich – but, for whatever reason, “in the end it didn’t work out.”

Last year, our friend Robert Sanchez over at IESB.net spoke to 20th Century Fox CEO, Tom Rothman, about Independence Day 2‘s status and effectively he said it was all down to Emmerich, and that the story, “can and should continue.” And today, thanks to the guys over at Latino Review, ...

Click to continue reading Fox Stalling Independence Day Sequel
