Screen Rant owner Vic Holtreman originally founded this site with the intention of providing readers with a middle-ground/average person perspective on movie news and reviews – hence our old mantra “movie and TV news without the sugar coating.” While the site has certainly evolved – we now cover a wider range of genres and provide readers with a variety of diverse “voices” – our willingness to champion both entertaining and/or artistic movies (at least on a case by case basis) hasn’t changed.

Which is why we (Vic and myself) jumped at the chance to participate in Film School Reject‘s recent article the “10 Greatest Movies of All Time (According to the Internet).” Now the results are in.

The original idea (read the full FSR list), drummed-up by the host of their ...

Click to continue reading The Internet Selects the 10 Greatest Movies of All Time

Wally Pfister has firmly established himself as a pristine director of photography over the past decade, thanks to his stellar work in film, ranging from high-octane caper flicks (The Italian Job) to small-scale indie dramas (Laurel Canyon) and even productions that (at first) seem to have little intrinsic cinematic value (Moneyball).

Pfister is of course best known for his collaborations with filmmaker Christopher Nolan, which have snagged Pfister numerous Oscar nods for his camerawork on Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight – along with a win for Best Cinematography on Inception.

That’s why it’s big news that Pfister is slated to “go solo” behind the camera and make his feature-length directing debut later this year, after his latest collaboration with Nolan (on a tiny film you may have heard of, called <a ...

Click to continue reading ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Cinematographer To Make His Directorial Debut

Tom Hardy isn’t a household name, but he will likely be one by the end of 2012. In a series of five films (one of which hasn’t been released yet) from 2010 through this year, the British actor has quickly established a name for himself. This eclectic mix of films show Hardy in a variety of roles – and are quickly propelling him onto on the Hollywood A-list.

Prior to these movies, Hardy had been working in the business for a number of years and earned strong reviews for his work in earlier films, including 2008′s Bronson. But it wasn’t until 2010 that a little film by Christopher Nolan put Hardy in front of a huge international audience and put him in line to become ...

Click to continue reading 5 Film Roles That Are Propelling Tom Hardy Onto The Hollywood A-List

[With all the heated discussion over our Green Lantern review (and pretty much any other superhero movie these days), we thought it might be an opportune time to resurrect this article from last year - Ed.]

“Opinions are like armpits – everyone has them and some of them stink,” so the old adage goes. This phrase rings doubly true when it comes to movie critics and their reviews of films.

The word “critic” is derived from the word “critique” which is defined by Dictionary.com as “a criticism or critical comment on some subject.” Film critics in general simply critique a movie based on their personal feelings and experiences. Why then do people get totally upset when a review for a film goes in the complete opposite direction of their personal experiences?

In other words: Why do people care if critics hate the movies they like?

Adds More Films to Its Streaming Movie Facebook Library" width="532" height="352" />

The fast-paced world of digital video rentals has all but been dominated by Netflix at this point. Sure, there are other ways to rent movies and television shows online – iTunes, Hulu, Amazon, even the near extinct Blockbuster – but you rarely (if ever) hear someone say, “Guess what just hit Amazon Instant Video!”

That said, there are those people who exist that wouldn’t leave Facebook if they didn’t have to. If it were possible, they’d have Facebook everything, from email to music to videogames to movies. Fortunately for those people, Warner Bros. is expanding its Facebook movie rental library with five additional films.

That library, which previously only included The Dark Knight, will now include such studio hits as <a title="Watch the First Two Harry Potters on Facebook" href="http://www.facebook.com/harrypottermovie?sk=app_208758265817017" ...

Click to continue reading Warner Bros.
This weekend movie fans will bear witness to the 83rd Academy Awards, and like in years past, the 2011 Oscar race is shaping up to be more a confirmation of what everybody already suspects, rather than a thrilling race between neck-and-neck films, actors, and directors who are all hoping to walk away basking in Oscar’s glory.

With films like Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit, The Social Network, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and even Iron Man 2 up for nominations in different categories, the 2011 Oscars ceremony will offer something for arthouse, mainstream, and fanboy cinephiles alike.

This year’s crop of nominees for Best Cinematography all bring something unique to the visual table. Some went with a traditional hand-held approach, while others show vast landscapes and the characters within. Only one can walk away with the Oscar, but each is deserving of a nomination.

Four established cinematographers challenge a relative newcomer, but the crop is filled with pure talent. Each film approached the visual aesthetic in a different way and the result is a compilation of films that stand out from one another, but make for an inspiring year in cinematography.

While each of the five nominees are deserving, some snubs deserve mention. Robert Richardson’s cinematography in Shutter Island helped it stand out, but the lengthy gap between its release and the Oscars may have hurt its chances. Enter the Void is arguably ...

Click to continue reading Oscars 2011 Spotlight: Best Cinematography

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

While some say an 'Inception' sequel is not going to happen, the cast is signed for sequels and director Christopher Nolan is open to it. Just not yet.

We didn’t know much about Christopher Nolan’s post-The Dark Knight mystery movie known as Inception early last year, other than its stellar cast and a story we knew would be a mind-bending thriller. We did expect good things though, but I don’t think anyone expected it to achieve the success it did.

Warner Bros. was very smart in giving Nolan the time and money he wanted to work on what some thought was not a bankable idea. Now Inception sits with over $820 million earned at the worldwide box office and 8 Oscar nominations. So, when are they going to make a sequel?

In Hollywood, money leads to … more money, so even though many viewers firmly believe Inception stands strongest by itself and ends where it needs to, there are others ...

Click to continue reading Inception Cast Signed For Potential Sequels

'The King's Speech' and 'The Social Network' won big at the BAFTA Film Awards. Can we expect something similar to happen at the Oscars?

The British Academy Film Awards – or as most Americans refer to them, “the British version of the Academy Awards” – were held last night. As one of the more respected entertainment awards shows, the BAFTA film awards tend to, but don’t always, predict the big winners for the subsequent Oscars, which will be held in two weeks’ time on February 27th.

In an unsurprising turn, Tom Hooper’s favored film, The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, and David Fincher’s The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, were the big winners of the night.

Without further adieu, the 2011 BAFTA Film Awards went to:

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

-

Review

Christopher Nolan explains the reasoning behind not implementing 3D into 'Inception' and why he won't introduce the format with the conclusion of his Batman trilogy, in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

While comic book fans and movie buffs theorize on what characters, villains and stories Christopher Nolan is drawing from to conclude his Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises, we do have some important hard facts about the film. What may be the most interesting design choice about the movie – and certainly very pleasing to moviegoers – is that Nolan will not will shooting Batman 3 in 3D, nor converting it afterward as per the desire of Warner Bros.

Nolan’s interest in utilizing IMAX tech may lead to them shooting most, if not all, of The Dark Knight Rises in the higher resolution (and expensive) format instead. And if director of photography, Wally Pfister, has his way, he’d love to do ...

Click to continue reading Christopher Nolan Explains Choice of No 3D in Batman 3

Hollywood studios always hope to attain one of the many tiny gold naked man statues handed out on Oscar night and even films that that are foremost exercises in style over substance stand a chance of doing just that. The 2011 Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January 25th, but the Academy has narrowed down its list of potential candidates to win the prize for eye-dazzling visual F/X.

Seven movies – Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and TRON: Legacy - are still in the running to snag a nod for their effects work.
For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

We’ve spent the last few days carrying on about the worst films of 2010 and the biggest disappointments in the hopes of healing our and your collective psyches from the damage sustained after watching inane movies like Jonah Hex or Furry Vengeance (*shudder*).

Now we turn our attention to the high points of 2010 – namely, the movies that met or exceeded our expectations and entertained us enough so as to earn a permanent spot on our personal favorites films list.

While a favorite movies list does not strictly correspond with a best movies list (case in point – flicks like Citizen Kane or The Seventh Seal aren’t traditionally considered proper choices for a fun Saturday night viewing), there’s certainly a good deal of crossover between the two. A number of this year’s critical ...

Click to continue reading Our Favorite Movies of 2010

As 2010 comes to an end, most sites are busy compiling top 10 lists ranking the best films of the year. While I always appreciate a good top 10 movie list, I’ve slowly come around to the opinion that at year’s end, it’s not just the discussion of entire films that dominates the talk around my holiday dinner table, but also the best scenes and/or moments that stuck in moviegoers’ minds.

So, following in the tradition started by our list of the best movie moments of 2009, I’d once again like to submit to you, the readers, Screen Rant’s top 10 movie moments of 2010.

This was an odd year in cinema. 2010 started off with moviegoers still caught up in the phenomenon of James Cameron’s Avatar; people were wondering just ...

Click to continue reading The Top 10 Movie Moments of 2010

A new behind the scenes feature has been released for this summer's critically acclaimed blockbuster 'Inception.'

Warner Bros. has released a short behind the scenes video for director Christopher Nolan’s critically lauded blockbuster Inception.

The purpose of the release is likely two-fold – one to help promote the Inception Blu-ray and DVD sets that were released earlier this month, and two, to draw attention to the film as we approach awards season.

Inception has been nominated for four Golden Globes including Best Picture and Best Director (which the video highlights right at the top) and will likely also receive Academy Awards nominations for both of those categories – as well as several more.

The feature feels a bit more promotional in tone than a fully fleshed out behind the scenes piece, yet it is effective as an appetizer for the more comprehensive limited edition briefcase set.

Take a look at the featurette below:

'Avatar' may have grossed $2.7 billion worldwide, but it also tops the list of the most pirated movies of 2010. See what other movies were the most popular illegal downloads of the year.

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

On the other end of the spectrum is ...

Click to continue reading ‘Avatar’ Tops List of Most Pirated Movies in 2010

'Cinema 2010' is an excellent film retrospective that not only features plenty of stylish, action-packed clips, but also a touching look back at the movies of 2010.

The end of 2010 is nigh and with it comes the expected avalanche of features, articles, and videos chronicling the best/worst movies to hit theaters over the past 365 days or so. Whether you think 2010 was a weak or strong year for cinema overall, there’s no denying that it had its share of poignant drama, side-splitting humor, nightmarish horror, gritty action, and lots of eye-popping visuals in both 2D and 3D.

Most 2010 film retrospective videos released so far have attempted to cram in as many visually dazzling or intensely memorable moments from this year’s most popular releases as possible – so chances are we’re all gong to be mildly sick of seeing the same exact clips (awesome though they may be) from films like Inception or The Social Network by the time 2011 finally arrives.
