A pair of typical modern-day popcorn movies face-off against epic classics on home video this week. It probably won’t be a close battle, but there is plenty of war to be seen from rival gnome families to legendary battles in American history.

I Am Number Four serves as the lone release that doesn’t explore the concept of war directly, even though there is an intergalactic battle brewing on Earth. Oliver Stone’s masterpiece Platoon and one of Charlie Chaplin’s most famous works The Great Dictator both hit Blu-ray this week alongside some other notable titles.

The following movies can be found on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

This Week:

Johnny Depp’s Rango wrangles to the top of the box office, while Matt Damon makes a minor Adjustment; Kevin Spacey and David Fincher stack a House of Cards; Beware The Ides of March – in October; Tony and Ridley Scott speak Pigeon English; Joel Silver has A Line of Sight, It’s A. Mann’s World for Kelly Hu, Caitlin Crosby, Sandra Vergara and J.R. Bourne and more.

Johnny Depp’s Rango (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend. The ILM animated film, which reunited the A-list star with his Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, grossed an estimated $38 million.

Matt Damon was in second place with The Adjustment Bureau (read our review). The Phillip K. Dick adaptation surpassed expectations and banked an estimated $21 million – the film was heavily marketed as Bourne meets Inception.

This week:

Owen Wilson has the highest new entry at the box office with Hall Pass, while Nic Cage runs out of gas with Drive Angry; Patrick Wilson and James Marsden move into a Loft; Clint Eastwood’s J.Edgar has someone to Root for; Gerard Butler is Playing The Field with Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel and Steve Carell moves out of The Office and onto the stage with Burt Wonderstone.

Box Office

Oscar weekend saw quite a few weak performing films at the box office. The Elton John soundtracked Gnomeo & Juliet was first after singing-up an additional $14.2 million. The Shakespeare themed ‘toon has now grossed over $75 million.

The Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass (read our review) opened at number two with a not very impressive $13.5 million. The comedy which stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudekis failed to find an audience like other buddy-comedies such as

The Box office is Unknown; Hailee Steinfeld is Forgotten; Sarah Jessica Parker talks Sex and the City 3; Darren Aronofsky floats his boat with Noah; Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy tackle werewolves with Sharp Teeth and Who are The History Keepers?

Box Office

Liam Neeson looks set to top the box office over the weekend with his latest action-thriller. Unknown (read our review) sees the Irish star kicking butt in Europe (not unlike Taken), the Joel Silver produced film will collect around $26 million over the Presidents’ Day long weekend (or $21.8 million for the three days).

Elton John musical Gnomeo and Juliet should see $25 million over the long weekend ($19.4 million for three days), upping its gross to $56 million.

I Am Number Four is an amalgamation of every conceivable snare for both the male and female teenage animal. With thematic and visual references to classic teen-angst romances such as Rebel Without A Cause and the contemporary paranormal young-love phenomenon The Twilight Saga, as well as a third act infusion of the Michael Bay-brand action, I Am Number 4 shamelessly grasps for every last leaf on the young-adult movie money tree.

The teen alien-action-romance I Am Number Four opens in theaters this weekend and many expect that it will will be a smooth ride to box office success for the film on the YA entertainment highway that “Bieber Fever” paved last week.

We recently had the chance to talk with the creative team behind I Am Number Four about the process of developing a fresh science-fiction mythology that works for a large cross-spectrum of the young adult audience.

The film, and book-series that the film is based on, was designed to appeal to the current appetites of teen audience. Large, sweeping action sequences for the boys, all-consuming romance for the girls, and “other-world” elements for both parties.

Movie Clip Roundup: ‘Sanctum’ & ‘I Am Number Four’

February is just around the bend and with it comes a slight improvement in the quality of Hollywood productions hitting theaters. This Friday marks the arrival of Sanctum, a 3D thrill ride produced by James Cameron, while the adolescent alien action flick I Am Number Four hits the scene in less than three weeks.

Several minutes of footage have been released for both films, and provide a taste of what each has to offer – namely impressive visuals and atmosphere from Cameron’s cavernous adventure, and lots of super-powered mayhem, explosions, and teen drama from director D.J. Caruso’s new movie.

SR Pick [Video]: 2011 Movies – The Year of the Alien

The entertainment industry runs in cycles (we’re looking at you, vampires) and 2011 will be no different. While 3D movies run amok, a slew of alien movies will also touch down in theaters this year.

In honor of the extraterrestrial trend, we’ve put together a trailer for 2011: The Year of the Alien.

There’s no guarantee these movies will be good, but there’s also no question we will see plenty of interplanetary action. Skyline kicked off the alien trend last year with a less-than-impressive $55 million at the worldwide box office (not to mention less-than-impressive reviews). If 2011 movies are any better, we could be in for $1 billion in ticket sales (we’re looking at you, Transformers 3).

For better or for worse, the previously-released previews and promotional material for next February’s big screen treatment of the hit sci-fi novel I Am Number Four have thus far sold the movie as essentially being Twilight with aliens instead of supernatural creatures.

A third theatrical trailer has been released for producer Michael Bay/director D.J. Caruso’s alien teens with superpowers pic – one that’s all the more interesting because it focuses more on the main character’s other worldly heritage and attempts to control his deadly abilities.

What do you get when Michael Bay produces a movie about teenage humanoid extraterrestrials who hide out on Earth, romance actual humans, and must learn to control their superpowers so as to defend themselves against Romulan-like creatures? Kudos to those that answered I Am Number Four.

A second theatrical preview for the film – which was co-produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) – has made its way online. ‘I Am Number Four’ Featurette Reveals Alien Action Love Story

The general movie going masses aren’t all that aware of director D.J. Caruso’s (Eagle Eye) upcoming sci-fi/action film, I Am Number Four, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the buzz for this film will grow as the release date nears.

No doubt hoping to expose I Am Number Four to the mainstream, Dreamworks has released a new featurette, in which D.J. Caruso and up-and-coming stars Alex Pettyfer (Beastly) and Dianna Agron (Glee) discuss the mix of action and romance that will (allegedly) make I Am Number Four a worthwhile movie experience.

This week:

Jackass 3D hits the top spot at the box office while Bruce Willis sees Red; J.J. Abrams is Infinitely Polar Bear; Samuel L. Jackson heads Holmes with Hawkshaw; Joe Carnahan tackles Umbra; Catherine Hardwicke moves from Edward & Bella to Romeo & Juliet; Noomi Rapace sets sail on The Last Voyage of The Demeter; Luke Evans and Alice Eve join John Cusack in The Raven and there’s lots more.

After several weeks of serious adult-skewed films holding the top spot at the box office, it looked like audiences wanted to let loose and relax by watching grown men getting hit in the crotch with the full 3D experience. This thirst for pain is the reason that the number one position was filled by Jackass 3D (read our review here). The $20 million budgeted comedy brought in a stellar $49.5 million, easily capturing the number one spot.

I Am Number Four is an upcoming sci-fi adventure based off the popular book series, written by James Frey and Job Hughes. Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg produced the film, which was directed by D.J. Caruso of Eagle Eye and Disturbia fame.

The first trailer for I Am Number Four is now online and it focuses primarily on the setup to the film, which involves a group of nine humanoid aliens that flee to Earth after their home world is destroyed. These super-powered beings – who are named Number One, Number Two, etc. – are now being hunted down (sequentially) by the same beings that destroyed their planet.

MTV is exclusively reporting that Percy Jackson actor Jake Abel has joined the cast of the young adult sci-fi film I Am Number Four. Abel will play the part of Mark, a rival to the movie’s main character, a transplanted alien called “Number Four” who is hiding out as a high school student. Abel joins an impressive cast featuring Alex Pettyfer (as Number Four), Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer and Kevin Durand.

Abel elaborated on his role, explaining how he’s the typical high school jock and why he’s disappointed he doesn’t get to mix it up in any of the movie’s action scenes.

Sharlto Copley Dismisses Rumors Over ‘I Am Number Four’

Earlier this week, we reported that Timothy Olyphant replaced Sharlto Copley in DJ Caruso’s teen sci-fi film I Am Number Four over creative differences related to his character’s look. According to an exclusive report from Film Drunk, Copley wanted his character to look more like an alien, complete with a prosthetic nose and Spock ears. In a recent interview with MTV however, Copley dismissed that report as a rumor, explaining that he left the film strictly because of his busy schedule.

In the MTV interview, Copley says that the scheduling conflict revolved around his publicity responsibilities for The A-Team and that, while the production team worked on ways to accomodate him, he felt it was damaging to the movie to remain involved.

Casting has been moving swiftly ahead for the teen alien film, I Am Number Four. Recent casing additions including Kevin Durand (Robin Hood) and Dianna Agron (Glee). But today it’s being reported that a major cast member has been replaced.

Variety reports that District 9‘s Sharlto Copley has been replaced by The Crazies star, Timothy Olyphant, in I Am Number Four. The reason for this sudden switch-up is scheduling conflicts with Copley’s promotional tour for The A-Team, in which he stars as ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock.

The Freddie Kruger horror re-imagining stole $34 million from cinemagoers giving the long-running franchise a record best opening. Sharlto Copley started out as an actor in the role of “Sniper” in Neil Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg. The director went on to cast Copley in the feature-length version of that short, a little film by the name of District 9 (don’t know if you’ve heard of it). Copley was fantastic in that role and certainly proved himself as not just a serious actor but a movie star, too.

We’ve already seen evidence that Copley is going places as he was cast as “Howling Mad” Murdock in the upcoming A-Team movie, a role which, judging by the trailers, he looks to have nailed.
