Back to the Future: Hollywood’s Fascination with Prequels

The release date for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is looming, and the marketing materials won’t have you know it, but the film is a prequel to Scott’s 1979 film, Alien. The term “prequel” is something of a dirty word in Hollywood these days, and therefore, Scott refers to the film as having “strands of Alien‘s DNA”. Okay, so that clears things up.

The notion of the prequel doesn’t just show Hollywood’s dearth of originality – it also illustrates that they have little faith in their audience. We can no longer just imagine that characters had lives before they appeared onscreen – now those pre-lives also have to be shown. It’s the cinematic equivalent of meeting someone for the first time and then telling them your life story up until that moment.

‘I Am Legend 2′ with Will Smith is Officially Moving Forward

There have been rumblings about an impending second installment in the I Am Legend (would-be) franchise being made, ever since the original 2007 film grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide in theaters. Warner Bros. has finally struck a deal to do just that, with Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman – who co-wrote and produced the original Legend adaptation – now onboard to collaborate on the project (in some form).

Here’s where things get a bit tricky. The second I Am Legend flick is (as Deadline puts it) “not being called a prequel,” and is being fashioned so as to allow Will Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville (if the A-lister so chooses).

Is ‘I Am Legend 2′ A Sequel Or A Prequel?

Hmmmm…Didn’t the end of the theatrical version of I Am Legend result in Will Smith being blown to hell by his own grenade? Oh…. uhh… Spoiler alert?

A source of Ain’t It Cool News provided them with an interesting possible update to the status of the next I Am Legend film. It was originally thought to be a prequel for the obvious reason that Will Smith’s character, Robert Neville, died at the end of the film.

I guess studios will stop at nothing to make a franchise out of something – whether it be prequels, sequels, reboots, etc. In this case though, the source for AICN has yet to be tested so this could all be mumbo jumbo.

Hollywood loves a franchise. We get it!

But that does not mean that you make a sequel/prequel to every film – even films that don’t deserve it!

The Will Smith-starring I Am Legend was a stand-alone film, based on the wonderful novel by Richard Matheson. Now it would appear that the film made so much money that a prequel is in order.

Be warned SPOILERS FOLLOW about I Am Legend so if you haven’t seen it yet…

Will Smith bloody dies in the film - and the movie told us about the events that took place before the film’s main narrative. So why on earth make a frickin’ prequel?

Cash-money, that’s why.

Considering that Smith bit the big one at the end of the original, a prequel is the only way that the A-list star can return.
