Much like other popular Dreamworks animated features such as Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon is getting its own TV spinoff (along with a feature-length sequel due out in 2014). The former of those two HTTYD projects is titled Dragons and remains set to begin airing on Cartoon Network by the second half of 2012.

A pair of TV teasers for Dragons have made their way online and (as you might expect) they don’t shed much light on the actual plot of the television show. However, there are some brief bits of early footage that reveal some of the new dragons that’ll be introduced in the series, along with familiar material featuring Hiccup (voice of Jay Baruchel) soaring through the sky atop everyone’s favorite Night Fury, Toothless.

With films like Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit, The Social Network, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and even Iron Man 2 up for nominations in different categories, the 2011 Oscars ceremony will offer something for arthouse, mainstream, and fanboy cinephiles alike.

The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

'The King's Speech' and 'The Social Network' won big at the BAFTA Film Awards. Can we expect something similar to happen at the Oscars?

The British Academy Film Awards – or as most Americans refer to them, “the British version of the Academy Awards” – were held last night. As one of the more respected entertainment awards shows, the BAFTA film awards tend to, but don’t always, predict the big winners for the subsequent Oscars, which will be held in two weeks’ time on February 27th.

In an unsurprising turn, Tom Hooper’s favored film, The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, and David Fincher’s The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, were the big winners of the night.

Without further adieu, the 2011 BAFTA Film Awards went to:

Dreamworks hit it out of the park both critically and financially with How to Train Your Dragon last year and already the studio already has plans for both a sequel and an animated series that will air on Cartoon Network.

Executive producer Tim Johnson has opened up a bit about what we can expect from the TV spinoff and How to Train Your Dragon 2, which he says will likely be unveiled in the second half of 2012 and 2013, respectively.

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

-

Review

Gervais was scathingly blunt as usual ...

Click to continue reading 2011 Golden Globe Award Winners

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

We’ve spent the last few days carrying on about the worst films of 2010 and the biggest disappointments in the hopes of healing our and your collective psyches from the damage sustained after watching inane movies like Jonah Hex or Furry Vengeance (*shudder*).

Now we turn our attention to the high points of 2010 – namely, the movies that met or exceeded our expectations and entertained us enough so as to earn a permanent spot on our personal favorites films list.

While a favorite movies list does not strictly correspond with a best movies list (case in point – flicks like Citizen Kane or The Seventh Seal aren’t traditionally considered proper choices for a fun Saturday night viewing), there’s certainly a good deal of crossover between the two. A number of this year’s critical ...

Click to continue reading Our Favorite Movies of 2010

As 2010 comes to an end, most sites are busy compiling top 10 lists ranking the best films of the year. While I always appreciate a good top 10 movie list, I’ve slowly come around to the opinion that at year’s end, it’s not just the discussion of entire films that dominates the talk around my holiday dinner table, but also the best scenes and/or moments that stuck in moviegoers’ minds.

So, following in the tradition started by our list of the best movie moments of 2009, I’d once again like to submit to you, the readers, Screen Rant’s top 10 movie moments of 2010.

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Leading the movie pack with seven nominations is the period drama The King’s Speech, which began to garner serious awards buzz back when it toured the festival circuit this past fall. David Fincher’s The Social Network has already snagged a handful of critic’s choice awards and secured six Gold Globe nods, matching that of this month’s true-life boxing drama, The Fighter.
Dreamworks’ wonderfully funny and entertaining animated film How to Train Your Dragon was regarded as one of the best movies of the year. Here at Screen Rant, our own Vic Holtreman gave it a near-perfect 4.5/5 star review. Given the near-universal praise for the movie, it’s not surprising to learn that How to Train Your Dragon led all other animated movies with an impressive 15 nominations at this year’s annual Annie Awards.

How to Train Your Dragon will compete with Despicable Me, Tangled, Toy Story 3, and The Illusionist for Best Animated Feature. Of those films, Despicable Me received seven total nominations, The Illusionist received five, Toy Story received three, and Tangled received two nominations. DreamWorks’ Megamind and Shrek Forever After earned six and five nominations, respectively.

While next week has some of the most exciting home video releases of the year, this week is reasonably entertaining. Specific crowds will be pleased with some of the new DVD and Blu-ray releases, but the big picture is relatively weak.

There is only one release from this year that might make a few dollars on the shelves, but even that is questionable. Let’s face it, few people praised Jonah Hex. The other notable titles are mostly re-releases that deserve a spot in your collection.

Back in April, DreamWorks Animation announced that it was moving ahead with a sequel to How To Train Your Dragon, an absolute no-brainer when you look at the almost $500 million it made at the worldwide box office.

At the time of the announcement, we didn’t really have any details other than “we’re making it” and that it would come out sometime in 2013. However, the studio has today officially announced the first details about How To Train Your Dragon 2 (as its being referred to until we hear of another title), including which voice actors will be making a return.

Last year it was reported that Guillermo del Toro would be making a new animated movie entitled Trollhunters as the first movie from Double Dare You, a new animation studio set up over at Disney. However, fast-forward a year and it appears (for whatever reason) that del Toro is making Trollhunters at a different studio.

Heat Vision reports del Toro landing at Dreamworks Animation, where he’ll write and direct Trollhunters (apparently that’s a working title but I personally like it as is). Del Toro visited the studio’s campus in California every week for most of this past summer and has decided to “move in” in a manner of speaking.

Not only will del Toro write and direct Trollhunters at Dreamworks, he’ll also serve as a consultant and exec producer on lots of other projects ...

Click to continue reading Del Toro Lands At Dreamworks Animation With ‘Trollhunters’

Iron Man 2 blasted into the top of top of the box office over the weekend. The start comes hot on the heels of the sequel’s impressive international debut last week. Jon Favreau’s first Iron Man movie opened to $102 million in 2008. The Marvel hero’s debut was in line with studio expectations , and it should rank in the top five starts of all time, behind The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3 and Twilight: New Moon.
Already one of the best films of the year, How to Train Your Dragon is pushing DreamWorks Animation off to a flying start, with strong weekends at the box office and even stronger critical response.

As of today, How to Train Your Dragon has brought in over $370 million at the worldwide box office and was #1 this past weekend, its fifth weekend out. The automatic and obvious response of the studio is to start development of a sequel, and according to their first quarter financial results, that’s exactly what they’re doing.

In their press release from earlier today, DreamWorks placed their strong financial results on the success of How to Train Your Dragon and labeled it their “next franchise.”

Box Office

Hold over hit How to Train Your Dragon flambéed the competition over the weekend. The animated tale banked $14.5 million on its fifth weekend. The DreamWorks ‘toon has now scored $177 million in total.

It looks like Jennifer Lopez’ career comeback is going to need a back-up plan, as The Back-up Plan failed to ignite audience interest since it debuted on Friday. The oft-delayed romantic comedy was supposed to kick-start J-Lo’s career which has been faltering in recent ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 25, 2010

How to Train Your Dragon kicks Alice off the top spot; Tom Selleck returns in Reagan’s Law! Kate Hudson has Something Borrowed; Carey Mulligan is a Fair Lady and will Tom Cruise and Reese Witherspoon saddle up for Paper Wings?

Box Office

Alice in Wonderland was finally slayed by How To Train Your Dragon. The 3D animated tale grossed a decent, if not spectacular $45 million. It should play well in the future and make a killing on DVD/Blu-ray.

Although Alice dipped to number two, it didn’t do too badly with a weekend take of $17.5 million. $293 million in the bank and a home video release in the near future means that Disney is going to have an impressive fiscal year.

John Cusack’s Hot Tub Time Machine was third with a disappointing take of $13 million.
3D Movie Tickets are about to get more expensive than ever. Will you have no choice but to accept the price hike, or will you become a more selective moviegoer as a result?

Quick anecdote: earlier this month, my girlfriend and I went to see Alice In Wonderland in 3D. Always the gentleman, I of course paid for the tickets, unaware that here in the wonderful NYC, the price for a 3D movie ticket was up to $16.50. For you mathematically challenged readers, that was a total of approximately $35 for two movie tickets.

If that figure isn’t shocking enough, maybe this next bit of news is: 3D movie ticket prices are about to get even higher.

The increases will reportedly vary by market (state/city/town), and/or by theater chain (Regal, AMC, etc.). However, increases could be as steep as 26% in some areas, and some moviegoers (the ones who don’t ...

Click to continue reading 3D Movie Tickets Get a Price Hike
