Legendary Pictures is attempting to emulate the success of 'Fast Five' by developing an 'edgier' film based on Mattel's popular 'Hot Wheels' toy line.

This certainly isn’t going to ease concerns that Hollywood is running out of ideas. Studios have always preferred building their franchises around established brands rather than developing original material, so it’s no surprise that we’ve witnessed an exponential growth in the number of films based on preexisting material over the last several decades. Forgotten action figures, classic board games, old chewing gum wrappers… if it has name recognition, it’s a pretty safe bet that a producer has optioned it.

It might seem ridiculous, but thanks in no small part to the wildly successful Transformers series, there’s a particularly strong interest in crafting films based on popular toy properties – and Mattel’s Hot Wheels line has been one of the company’s most recognizable and resilient brands since its introduction in 1968.

Silver Pictures producer Alex Heineman provides some pre-production updates on 'Hot Wheels', the 'Logan's Run' remake and 'Sherlock Holmes 2'.

Producer Alex Heineman recently shared some information on three films he and Joel Silver are working on. In an interview with Collider, the Silver Pictures producer made mention of significant movement in the production of Hot Wheels and the Logan’s Run remake, while confirming Sherlock Holmes 2 is definitely something they want to get off the ground.

SHERLOCK HOLMES 2

Not much was said about Sherlock Holmes 2, but if you enjoyed the Guy Ritchie adaptation, you’ll be pleased to hear the production company plans on the sequel coming together soon. While Heineman mentioned they are quite busy at the moment, especially with at least the other two films, he also said “[it] is something that looks like it’s going to come together.”

Last summer I beat my body up mentally, physically and emotionally to look into the future and make some predictions of what would be Hollywood’s next latest and greatest movie idea fads. I touched on Clothing, Appliances, School Supplies and even Mundane Everyday Activities to compile a list. I guess I was painting with too broad a brush though, because I failed to see the onslaught of toys and board games that Hollywood was interested in making into a movie (read: messing up).

We’re entering a strange new world folks, one where a new set of Hollywood executives are in control, and much like me riding a mechanical bull with my shirt off, it ain’t pretty. Someone’s grandmother, mother or aunt was going through little Bobby Studio Exec’s old stuff up ...

Click to continue reading 7 Ridiculous Toy-Based Movies (That Will Probably Be Made)

The blurring of merchandising and film continues with Mattel aggressively pursuing bringing a “Hot Wheels” movie to the big screen. I’m sure I don’t need to explain to anyone what Hot Wheels are – those cool little metal toy cars that (at least if you’re a guy) you’ve known and loved at some point in your life.

So with brand recognition that strong, how could they NOT make a movie about them, right? RIGHT?

Oh, it’s very early in the movie-making stage for this project… so early in fact they have NO idea which direction to go. It could be Mad Max (but for kids!), or maybe The Fast and the Furious (which was for kids trapped in adult bodies). Oh, and there are other toy-based projects all itching to get started:
