DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: June 29th, 2010

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases offer up quite a bit of new releases for your end-of-the-month paycheck. But there is bigger news on the future of Blu-ray that should get all of you very excited.

The Back to the Future trilogy is one that many want to see on Blu-ray. On July 3rd, the original film will turn 25 years old. In celebration of that anniversary, Universal Studios Home Video has announced the Back to the Future trilogy will release on Blu-ray on October 26th, 2010.

There is an entire page of details on the Back to the Future release. The one that stands out is a new six-part retrospective documentary with cast, crew and even Steven Spielberg.

How to Train Your Dragon kicks Alice off the top spot; Tom Selleck returns in Reagan’s Law! Kate Hudson has Something Borrowed; Carey Mulligan is a Fair Lady and will Tom Cruise and Reese Witherspoon saddle up for Paper Wings?

Box Office

Alice in Wonderland was finally slayed by How To Train Your Dragon. The 3D animated tale grossed a decent, if not spectacular $45 million. It should play well in the future and make a killing on DVD/Blu-ray.

Although Alice dipped to number two, it didn’t do too badly with a weekend take of $17.5 million. $293 million in the bank and a home video release in the near future means that Disney is going to have an impressive fiscal year.

Me, Lake Tahoe & A ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’

A couple of weeks ago Screen Rant was asked by MGM studios to send a representative to Lake Tahoe, NV, to attend the press junket for the new comedy movie, Hot Tub Time Machine.

Screen Rant leader Vic Holtreman must have had some kind of mental breakdown, because he asked yours truly to go in his stead and represent our humble movie blog. And Tahoe may never be the same…

Let me just start by saying thank you to the fine folks at MGM for the opportunity to attend such an over-the-top event. The studio took care of us real well and showed us a good time .

We’ve been following the raunchy comedy Hot Tub Time Machine for a few months now and each time a new trailer or clip drops the movie gets funnier and raunchier. This latest red band trailer is no different. Laying it on thick with the cussing and sprinkling in some nudity, Hot Tub Time Machine is definitely not a comedy for everyone.

Hot Tub Time Machine follows the story of 4 friends, Adam (John Cusack), Lou, (Rob Corddry), Nick (Craig Robinson) and Jacob (Clark Duke), as they head up to a ski resort they’ve been frequenting since they were in college. Do you like hot tubs? Have you ever sat in your room wishing you could go back in time and make up for all of your short-comings as a teenager? Well, someone had the absolutely brilliant idea to combine both items and give us the awesomest movie idea to ever come out of Hollywood (well besides Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus) – Hot Tub Time Machine.

Director Steve Pink (Accepted) teams up with writers Josh Heald and Andrew Mogel to try and bring some laughs and originality to the Hot Tub Time Machine. BOX OFFICE:
The summer season is now well and truly here. Pixar’s Up shows that family films and the Pixar brand are hugely profitable. The animated film banked a huge $68 million over the weekend. For a film that sells most of it’s tickets in half price matinees that’s a lot of attendance.

Ben Stiller has no time for Salvation at the box office; George Clooney is a Private Gentleman; Lyndsy Fonseca gets into the Hot Tub Time Machine; Milla Jovovich throws a Stone; Ridley Scott looks for a younger Robin Hood and Kevin Costner makes a western – I’m not kidding.

Box Office

It looks like Ben Stiller is going to stay bankable in family films. Night at the Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian should bank an impressive $70 million over the four day weekend. Does that mean that they’ll inflict a third movie on us? Probably.

Terminator: Salvation will shoot up about $62 million over the long weekend. Not exactly the box office superstar they were hoping it would be.

This week:

Wolverine is Number 1! Keanu Reeves goes to Cartagena; Marcus Nispell captains The Last Voyage of Demeter; we learn about The Pale Horsemen; Jim Carrey likes The Beaver; Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson know Hesher and three more people jump into the Hot Tub Time Machine; And last but not least, The Road finally gets a new release date.

Box Office

Hugh Jackman proved that he’s still a draw as Wolverine as his X-Men franchise spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed up somewhere in the region of $85-90 million over the weekend. The weekend take was pretty much in line with expectations, but the road ahead might be tricky as reviews weren’t particularly great so there might be a huge drop-off next weekend which is usual for this type of movie.
