’28 Weeks Later’ Helmer In Talks To Direct ‘Highlander’ Remake [Updated]

“There can be only one” may be the mantra of the Highlander franchise, but it apparently doesn’t apply to how many reboots/remakes a filmmaker can be attached to.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo signed up to helm the Crow reboot earlier this year and is now reportedly the top choice to direct another re-fashioning of a cult title: Summit’s Highlander remake, which Fast Five helmer Justin Lin is no longer attached to (he officially left the project about a month ago).

Justin Lin Updates: ‘Fast & Furious 6′, ‘Terminator 5′, ‘Highlander’

Thanks to his work on the crowd-pleasing, $600 million grossing, smash hit that is Fast Five, director Justin Lin has become one of the most sought-after filmmakers out there. Besides his being up to direct Fast and Furious 6, Lin is also working behind-the-scenes on Terminator 5 and the Highlander remake – not to mention, he was recently shortlisted as a potential to helm Die Hard 5 as well.

Lin is now speaking out about all the aforementioned franchise titles, revealing which ones he’s actually involved with – and updating their current status.

Highlander Remake Story & Script Still in The Works

There can only be one! The Highlander franchise tagline couldn’t have been more wrong.

After a series of films featuring Christopher Lambert as the immortal Connor MacLeod a successful Highlander TV series starring Adrian Paul was launched, with Paul playing another member of the Clan MacLeod. Eventually, both immortals met for the film Highlander: Endgame and that was the end of the main franchise until Summit Entertainment announced a reboot in 2008, with Justin Lin (Fast Five) signing on to direct back in 2009, with Neil Moritz producing.

Although Lin is busy planning Terminator 5 with Arnold Schwarzenegger attached, as well as the obligatory Fast & Furious 6 movie, he’s still on board with Highlander and the script is being worked on.

Next week will mark the three-year anniversary to when we first reported about the Highlander remake ...

‘Twilight’ Scriber To Pen ‘Highlander’ Remake

Remakes, reboots, and re-anything are plentiful in the movie business nowadays and the Highlander franchise has been due to get a cinematic face-lift, so to speak, since 2008. Fast Five director Justin Lin has been attached for well over a year, but seemingly little progress has been made on the project.

Now comes news that Summit Entertainment is recruiting Melissa Rosenberg (The Twilight Saga) to give her spin on the mystical tale of Scottish immortals whose “There can be only one” philosophy simply would not gel with the idea of a reboot. Welcome to Hollywood folks.

Neal Moritz Talks Fast & Furious Sequels & Highlander Reboot

Producer Neal Moritz is one busy man – he currently has no less than 52 different projects in development (according to IMDB).

Two of these films include the fifth and sixth Fast and the Furious installments ( the fifth is currently titled Fast Five), as well as the reboot/ remake of 80s classic, Highlander. Moritz spoke with Collider recently and discussed both projects and their production status.

In regards to Fast & Furious 5 and 6, Moritz said that they would be shot closely together – but not back to back – and that the films would run into each other (no pun intended).

The producer added that Fast 5 would be shooting “in Brazil, Rio, Puerto Rico, a little bit in Los Angeles and some in Atlanta” during the summer.

Way back last year we brought you news that Iron Man scripters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway were penning the script for Summit Entertainment’s Highlander reboot. Now we finally have news about who is directing and producing the 21st Century Highlander update. Here’s a clue – they’re Fast and they’re Furious.

Yes – Fast and Furious director Justin Lin and blossoming super-producer Neal H. Moritz will call the shots on the Highlander remake.

The original Highlander told the tale of a 16th Century Scotsman – a highlander – who is immortal. He and other “immortals” fight through the ages in order to win “The Prize.” The only way that they can be killed is to be decapitated. Highlander starred Christopher Lambert and screen legend Sean Connery.

Two Words: Highlander. Remake.

Since I started writing for Screen Rant I have no idea how many movie remake stories I’ve covered, but every week seems to bring a new one. This week: Highlander.

If you don’t know, Highlander tells the tale of a 16th Century Scotsman – a highlander who happens to be immortal. He and other “immortals” fight through the ages in order to win “The Prize.” The only way that they can die is to be decapitated. Ouch!

The cast included Frenchman Christopher Lambert as the titular Highlander - Connor Macleod, Scotsman Sean Connery as a Spaniard and American Clancy Brown as the Germanic Kurgan.

It’s an outstanding movie… if a tad dated. It was released in 1986 and the soundtrack was composed by the band Queen.

The tag-line for the movie was: “There can be only one.”
