It’s the week every Star Wars fan has been waiting for – or at least complaining about – since news of George Lucas’ latest milking of the legendary saga. But the Skywalker saga is not the only title worth your attention arriving on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

In addition to Star Wars, a number of television shows and some independent films make their way to home video. But Tuesday offers up another blockbuster as Thor comes to DVD and Blu-ray in both 2D and 3D. If that isn’t enough, one of cinema’s most cherished classics, Citizen Kane, hits Blu-ray as well.

The following titles can now be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

If you didn’t read the excerpt above, allow me to reiterate: Hesher is absolutely, positively, NOT a movie for everyone. It’s not a movie that a lot of people will likely enjoy. In fact, it’s probably a movie that only a very, very, specific type of audience would enjoy – similar to the love of heavy metal music implied in the title and embodied by the titular character.

That said, as far as its merits as movie go, Hesher is a film that tries a unique approach to a topic that has been all but strip mined in cinema (coping with grief), and the results are mixed, at best.

‘Hesher’ International Trailer – Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is Crazy [Updated]

Between the late ’90s (when he was known as that kid on 3rd Rock from the Sun) and his supporting roles in blockbusters like G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Inception, Joseph Gordon-Levitt found his niche in the realm of indie movies.

Besides his memorable turns in darker, unorthodox fare like Mysterious Skin and Brick, as well as the quirky rom-com (500) Days of Summer, Levitt more recently appeared in the 2010 Sundance Film Festival release, Hesher, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Now that title is finally due to arrive in theaters this spring.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 3, 2009

This week:

Wolverine is Number 1! Keanu Reeves goes to Cartagena; Marcus Nispell captains The Last Voyage of Demeter; we learn about The Pale Horsemen; Jim Carrey likes The Beaver; Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson know Hesher and three more people jump into the Hot Tub Time Machine; And last but not least, The Road finally gets a new release date.

Box Office

Hugh Jackman proved that he’s still a draw as Wolverine as his X-Men franchise spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed up somewhere in the region of $85-90 million over the weekend. The weekend take was pretty much in line with expectations, but the road ahead might be tricky as reviews weren’t particularly great so there might be a huge drop-off next weekend which is usual for this type of movie.
