DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: March 15th, 2011

This week in DVD and Blu-ray releases is a little scarce, but offers at least three films worth a glance. The three movies come with a combined eight Oscars nominations…and one Razzie nomination.

Unfortunately, there are no exciting Blu-ray re-releases this week. If you picked up The Walking Dead last week, maybe this week’s limited home video releases won’t bother you as much.

The Criterion Collection releases a pair of Blu-ray transfers this week: Yi Yi and Au revoir les enfants. If either of those interest you, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better copy on home video now that Criterion has made its mark.

With The Social Network and The King’s Speech proving to be this year’s favorites, it appears that all of the suspense is gone of hearing who will take home the coveted Oscar. Of course, if the mixture of Hollywood and live television has taught us anything, surprises can and do happen.

As James Franco and Anne Hathaway take the stage to host tonight’s gala, film fans from around the will be wondering whether these two can talented actors can compete with some of the Academy Awards’ most memorable hosts.

This weekend movie fans will bear witness to the 83rd Academy Awards, and like in years past, the 2011 Oscar race is shaping up to be more a confirmation of what everybody already suspects, rather than a thrilling race between neck-and-neck films, actors, and directors who are all hoping to walk away basking in Oscar’s glory.

With films like Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit, The Social Network, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and even Iron Man 2 up for nominations in different categories, the 2011 Oscars ceremony will offer something for arthouse, mainstream, and fanboy cinephiles alike.

Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 7, 2010

This weekend:

The box office is Mega; Relativity Media cracks the Bible Code; Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro turn on Red Lights; Tropic Thunder’s Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Steve Coogan go Documental; Eli Roth brings you Psycho Killer and Aaron Eckhart is The Expatriate.

Box Office

Megamind (read our review) flew to the top of the box office after grossing an impressive $47.6 million over the weekend. The 3D animated film features the vocal talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Brad Pitt.

Due Date (read our review) with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis had to settle for second place, but it took in a decent $33.5 million. The film, which was directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, again shows RDJ’s new and reclaimed star power.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 31st, 2010

This Week:

A lot of people see Saw; get ready to meet Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter; prepare for The Demonologists, Paul Haggis goes to prison; Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Frances O’Connor go hunting; Pete Segal has a Grudge, Daniel Craig’s Dream House is a nightmare; Kilmer and Coppola are Twixt Now and Sunrise and lots more.

Box Office

Saw 3D (read our review and Saw in 6:66 feature) ousted Paranormal Activity 2 from the top spot and secured the lead over the Halloween weekend. The 3D horror sequel brought in an estimated $24.5 million to scare the beejeezus out of audiences- not bad for a film with a $20 million budget. While it’s not the best start for the franchise, it does beat the debut of last year’s installment. This might not be the last Saw after all.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 24, 2010

This weekend Paranormal Activity 2 captures the top spot; Tea Leoni joins Tower Heist; Shawn Ryan is Without Remorse; Pierre Morel is taken by Ouija; Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale have Contraband; Richard Branson and McG discover America, and more.

Box Office

Paranormal Activity 2 (read our review) scared away all the competition over the weekend. The horror sequel grossed a mighty $43.5 million over the three days– not bad for a film that only cost just $3 million to produce.

Jackass 3D dropped to second place after grossing almost 60% less than last weekend’s debut. Don’t feel too sorry for the Jackass crew – as the film still nabbed another $21 million for a $87 million total.

A lot of media outlets have described Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Hereafter as the famed director’s foray into sci-fi drama. It’s a clever marketing angle, especially around Halloween, but the assertion is hollow fluff – designed for catchy headlines. If you think Hereafter is a sci-fi movie, you probably missed the film’s most prominent message.

Instead of a Sixth Sense clone, the film is a hard-hitting character drama centered around life’s greatest mystery: death. It does this by offering a variety of perspectives on the subject: a near death experience, a lingering grief, and a complicated “gift.” Even at the age of 80, Eastwood carefully manages three story threads – piecing together a somber but empowering film that finds a solid balance between servicing the characters and the filmmaker’s message.

New Posters For ‘Hereafter’ and ‘Brave’

A poster for next month’s supernatural drama, Hereafter, has been released, while Disney/Pixar have unveiled the official logo for their Summer 2012 release, Brave.

Hereafter is the 35th film directed by Clint Eastwood and reunites the acclaimed filmmaker with his Invictus star, Matt Damon. Damon plays a psychic named George, a man who can actually communicate with those who have died. The official trailer for Hereafter portrayed the film as a thriller of sorts – one that touches on real-life global disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami from 2004.

Clint Eastwood is one of the most renowned directors in Hollywood today, but his films can be an acquired taste. Some consider his work dull, while others announce them as cinematic legend. His latest collaboration with Matt Damon (Invictus) on Hereafter finally has a trailer and it gives both sides fuel for their respective fires.

Eastwood’s 35th film as director is a supernatural thriller – a far cry from his typical reality-based stories. But the trailer for Hereafter looks and feels just like the moody, thought-provoking work he has presented in years past.

Eastwood And Damon Re-Teaming For ‘Hereafter’ [Updated]

We first heard word of a project called Hereafter late last year, with Clint Eastwood possibly directing and Steven Spielberg also being involved. Fast forward about 10 months and we learn, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, that Eastwood will, indeed, direct the film, and stepping into the lead role is Matt Damon. The project will reunite the two after they just worked together on the not-yet-released Nelson Mandela pic, Invictus.

Eastwood will direct the supernatural thriller from an original script by Frost/Nixon writer, Peter Morgan. DreamWorks first acquired the script from Morgan last year, and very early on it piqued the interest of Eastwood. Spielberg and Eastwood visit the Hereafter; Len Wiseman drives a Motorcade; Guillermo del Toro plays with Pinocchio; George Miller has Happy Feet again and Matthew McConaughey and David O. Russell fight with The Grackle.

Box Office

James Bond captured the top spot of the US box office with an amazing $71 million. The weekend take of Quantum of Solace was higher than any previous Bond entry in the series, and it highlights Daniel Craig’s popularity in the iconic role.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa took the runner up position with another $32 million giving the animated animal film an amazing $100 million. Role Models continues to impress with another $11.5 million in the bank, High School Musical 3: Senior Year grossed another $5.5 million bringing its total to $84million. While this is far from a bad gross (considering its low budget) it must be slightly disappointing for Disney.
