The Dark Knight Tops 2009 DVD Critics Awards

The results have been revealed for the 2009 DVD Critics Awards, which are presented every year (for the last five years) by Home Media Magazine, honoring DVD and Blu-ray titles from the previous year. The awards are usually held in conjunction with the Home Entertainment Summit, but the latter has been delayed due to scheduling conflicts. Nonetheless, the awards were given out and the critically acclaimed and much-loved Batman film, The Dark Knight, scooped up the most awards.

For the first time in five years, a TV DVD set has taken the top “2009 Critics Awards’ Title of the Year” in the form of The Sopranos: The Complete Series, which also earned the award for Best Collection/Multidisc set. But apart from that, The Dark Knight dominated with four awards. The awards were a mix of critics and judges’ votes, and online consumers (the latter in special categories such as “Best Superhero Title”). It’s not a surprise to hear that TDK dominated in the consumer categories.

I bought The Dark Knight Special Edition DVD as soon as it came out late last year, and have watched it (and its excellent special features) many times since. It’s really no surprise it won so many of these awards, considering how much of a hit it was with critics and fans alike. I’m just surprised people didn’t try to vote for it in the comedy category – you know, because some of The Joker’s lines were hilarious…

Guillermo Del Toro Gets Busy… Until 2017!

Back when many of you readers were in diapers, Godfather of Soul James Brown was known as “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business.” But since his passing in 2006, there has yet to emerge a figure to truly step up to the plate and proclaim that title… until now.

Director Guillermo del Toro, who is currently down in Middle Earth, err.. New Zealand, preparing for the The Hobbit and its follow-up Lord of the Rings “bridge” film, has his schedule completely booked from now until 2017(!?!)

Del Toro inked a three-year “first-look” deal with Universal Pictures (who bankrolled his HellBoy sequel after Sony opted out) last June.

Now plans are underway for him to helm remakes of Frankenstein (which last I remember the great Frank Darabont had done a draft that del Toro loved), Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and Slaughterhouse-Five - as well as an adaptation of the upcoming horror novel Drood for the studio.

If all goes according to plan, del Toro will jump immediately on those projects for Universal the moment he’s finished with Middle Earth. And as we all know, that’s going to be awhile.

Then of course, there are the various films he plans on producing for other directors. Not to mention, his well-known (and publicized) desire to adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness for the silver screen which will (eventually) happen according to Universal.

And then there’s the big question-mark of what all this does to HellBoy 3.

Regardless of how this goes down, del Toro will be a busy man. He’d better rest up though - looks like he won’t be sleeping for the next 10 years!

Short version: Hellboy II: The Golden Army stretches beyond the first film in both creepiness and humor, making for kind of an odd mix that manages to work in the end.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army is great, but like the first one, I don’t think it’s for everyone. The first Hellboy only earned $100MM worldwide, which does not exactly classify it as a (pardon the pun) monster hit. That’s not to say it wasn’t great (it was), it’s just that the world of Hellboy is an odd combination of demons, humor, action and creepiness. Oh, and the hero is a demon.

Director Guillermo del Toro’s fingerprints are all over this, right from the start of the film. We actually meet Hellboy as a, well, boy – and this gives John Hurt a chance to cameo as the adopted father of Hellboy, despite his having died in the first film. Seeing our big red buddy as a cute little child with big buck teeth was a bit weird, although he was very cute and wide-eyed.

Adding to the weird feeling at the start of the film was an animated sequence that gave us a visual of the bedtime story that Hurt was telling Hellboy – although the story consisted of humans, elves and trolls, the humans were portrayed as featureless wooden dolls. It was very interesting visually, but more than a bit strange. The story basically sets up the premise of the film, in which there was a huge war between men and the elves. The Elves were losing and had the trolls build them a golden, mechanical army of “70 times 70″ soldiers – the soldiers obeyed whoever wore a golden crown and were emotionless killing machines.

Eventually the elf king feels remorse over all the death that has come by his orders and arranges a truce between the elves and mankind, which has held for many centuries. The prince of the elves was never satisfied with this and still lives today in shadow, awaiting the opportunity to once again destroy mankind. He has part of the crown, but it is in three pieces and he needs to acquire them all in order to re-animate the golden army.

When we are reintroduced to our intrepid heroes: Hellboy, Liz and Abe Sapien (this time voiced by Doug Jones, the actor behind the makeup) we see that things have progressed by big H and Liz as far as a romantic relationship, but things are not going well. Hellboy is stuck in his bachelor ways, and on top of that is desperate for their secret group to become public.

Final Hellboy II Trailer

We’ve got the third and final trailer for Hellboy II: The Golden Army (aka Hellboy 2) for you below. While the narration on it is kind of cheesy, this film looks to be a visual feast. If it’s anything like the previous one that will just be icing on the cake as we should be getting plenty of cool action and humor to boot.

Unfortunately, with it’s odd combination of creatures from the netherworld, humor and a hero who is basically a demon, I don’t know how well this will do financially. I can tell you that at a screening I attended for another film, the crowd went nuts for the Mummy 3 trailer but was dead silent for this one. No accounting for taste, I suppose.

I realize that to the general public, Hellboy is even less well known than Iron Man. And then we have the story – a demon from Hell, who battles other demons on behalf of mankind.

Doesn’t exactly sound like happy go lucky family entertainment, does it?

I’m here to tell you to set that all aside if you want to see a kick-ass fantasy action movie with plenty of wit, to boot. Check out the trailer below, which is even better than the first one.

I love the look of this movie: The wild creature designs and the cinematography that looks like Technicolor on steriods. This trailer also gives us a better idea of the actual plot of the film.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who is well known for his visually striking films. He was the guy who did the first Hellboy movie as well as Pan’s Labyrinth (which I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t seen yet).

You really owe it to yourself to go see Hellboy II when it opens on July 11th!

Empire Magazine has sent us an image of the cover from their latest issue (larger version down below). It features Ron Perlman as Hellboy as he will appear in Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

Everything I’ve seen so far from this Guillermo Del Toro directed sequel looks really excellent. If the quality is up there with the first film, this is sure to be a great ride.

One thing that has really caught my eye in all the images that have been release so far as well as the trailer is the way the colors really “pop.” I like the exaggerated color scheme of the movie very much, and correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like it will be a departure from the cinematography of the first Hellboy movie which was darker in tone.

And I realize this image was released a few days ago, but I hadn’t gotten a chance to post it up, and this seems like a good place for it. It’s the character known as Johann Krauss, a disembodied ectoplasmic spirit with psychic abilities who maintains a tangible form via a containment suit.

I’ve never read the comic book version, but I think these movies stand well on their own.

The March issue of EMPIRE will be on sale from Friday February 1st and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army opens on July 11th.

Ok, ok… I haven’t given Hellboy 2: The Golden Army any coverage here on Screen Rant…

You got a problem with that?

Although I thought the original film was cool in an offbeat kind of way, I watched it and almost immediately forgot about it (I should probably rent it and see it again). So when word came out about a sequel, I didn’t jump to cover it because frankly, there are a ton of movies coming out and I had enough to write about as it was.

I’m going to make up for that with this post showing new images released by Universal Pictures and the brand spanking new trailer.

Above you can see Ron Perlman as Hellboy himself, with one big honkin’ gun and a few more images follow after the jump.
