At Thanksgiving it looked like box office numbers were moving in an upward trajectory, but now that the dust has settled, it appears that the numbers are continuing to disappoint

Top of the heap this week is New Year’s Eve, director Gary Marshall’s followup to his 2009 hit, Valentine’s Day. However, New Year’s Eve only banked $13.7 million over the weekend, a far cry from the $56 million that its predecessor scored when it debuted. Valentine’s Day was a front-loaded release, smartly positioned to debut strong over the Valentine’s day weekend. It could be argued that V Day had a better line-up of stars, with the likes of Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Fox and Jennifer Garner. Meanwhile, New Year’s Eve features Robert DeNiro, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker and ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: December 11th, 2011

This week:

Twilight‘s Breaking Dawn tops the box office-again; The Muppets score the runner-up spot and Hugo fails to light up the chart on its second week of release.

No major releases were unleashed by studios over the weekend, meaning that movie-goers had to make do with Thanksgiving leftovers. This meant that Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1 ruled the roost for the third week in a row. The vampire romance banked $16.9 million over the weekend and upped its cume to a powerful $247.3 million. The Bill Condon directed film has now brought in over $500 globally – a great number, especially after only three weeks on release, and one that will continue to climb.

The Muppets held onto the number two spot, bringing in $11.2 million worth of green.

Thanksgiving weekend saw some strong numbers at the box office, but there were no major break-out hits. A crowded market place saw quite a few solid numbers, but the overall weekend was down compared to last year.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1 was the undisputed king, taking in $42 million over the three days. The vampire film now has a total of $221 million, which is double the production budget. The Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart/Taylor Lautner love triangle has now scored about $400 million around the globe.

The Muppets (read our review) made their debut at #2 – taking $43.5 million worth of green (yeah, Kermit) since its Wendesday launch ($29.5 million over the three days). That just about covers the film’s production budget, but Disney did a heavy marketing push for ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 27th, 2011

The penultimate installment of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn-Part 1 topped the box office over the weekend grossing a massive $139 million. This fourth big screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel series banked $72 million on Friday – the third highest opening day ever behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $91 million and The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s $72.7 million.

Longevity is the key here, and Breaking Dawn (read our review) will undoubtedly be front-loaded, taking a massive hit next weekend. Although, having said that – the vampire romance has already covered its $110 million production budget, but it’ll be interesting to see if it beats the franchise high of Eclipse’s ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 20th, 2011

Back in 2006, George Miller (the mind behind the Mad Max movies) hit it big with his kid-friendly animated flick, Happy Feet. The film managed to gross some $384 million worldwide in theaters, thus ensuring that we would eventually “get” to see more celebrity-voiced penguins singing pop songs and dancing in Happy Feet 2.

There’s a new trailer out for the Happy Feet sequel, which looks to by and large to be a carbon copy of the original film. But, then again, was anyone really expecting it to be anything else?

For those who really want to know, here’s the official lowdown on Happy Feet 2:

In the film, Mumble (voice of Elijah Wood), The Master of Tap, has a problem because his tiny son Erik (Elizabeth Daily) is choreo-phobic. Reluctant to dance, Erik runs away and encounters ...

Click to continue reading ‘Happy Feet 2′ Trailer: Baby Penguins Bring Sexy Back

Well, here’s a pretty significant piece of news on more than one account:

An official statement has been released, revealing that Warner Bros. has signed a huge deal with IMAX to release up to 20 of their movies in that format from 2010 to 2013. And buried within this news is a detail that shakes things up a bit when it comes to the long-awaited adaptation of The Hobbit in that it’s now slated to come out a lot further down the road than we expected.

Along with the announcement of the WB/IMAX deal comes a bunch of release dates for each of the movies that are part of it.
Update: MTV Claims that Patrick Stewart is NOT in Mad Max 4

He’s performed Shakespeare and boldly gone where no one has gone before; he’s even helped to sharpen Wolverine’s claws but is Patrick Stewart now about to visit the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Australia to film Mad Max: Fury Road?

Possibly.

A scooper emailed Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News with the following:

“We met the one AND ONLY Patrick Stewart in Sydney today I’m still giddy… sa what u will about Chris Pine, but in my book, the sexiest captain title still belongs 2 Jean-Luc Picard! (And considering Stewart is 70… thats something!)”

Spielberg and Eastwood visit the Hereafter; Len Wiseman drives a Motorcade; Guillermo del Toro plays with Pinocchio; George Miller has Happy Feet again and Matthew McConaughey and David O.
Box Office

James Bond captured the top spot of the US box office with an amazing $71 million. The weekend take of Quantum of Solace was higher than any previous Bond entry in the series, and it highlights Daniel Craig’s popularity in the iconic role.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa took the runner up position with another $32 million giving the animated animal film an amazing $100 million. Role Models continues to impress with another $11.5 million in the bank, High School Musical 3: Senior Year grossed another $5.5 million bringing its total to $84million.
