The Last Airbender Leads 2011 Razzie Award ‘Winners’

It’s that time of year again, when the Oscars reward various filmmakers, films, and actors for their extraordinary cinematic work, and the Razzies punish various filmmakers, films, and actors for their especially horrendous cinematic work.

Last night, the 31st Annual Razzie Awards were held at Hollywood’s Barnsdall Gallery Theater. To no one’s surprise, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was the big “winner” (or maybe “loser” is more appropriate here) of the night, taking home the most Razzies. Alas, it wasn’t a clean sweep, as Sex and the City 2 took home several awards that Airbender was nominated for.

2011 Razzie Nominations: ‘Last Airbender’, ‘Twilight: Eclipse’ Lead The Pack

Memories of cinematic dreck released in 2010 lingers on in our collective consciousness, even with the promise of more disappointing sequels and undesired franchise rejuvenation (see – the Lethal Weapon reboot) to arrive in the future. Enter the diabolical minds behind the Razzie Awards.

Nominees for the 31st Annual Razzie Awards have been announced and M. Night Shyamalan’s much-derided TV show adaptation, The Last Airbender, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse are the leaders in the contest to be officially ordained the “best of the worst” in 2010.

Worst Picture nods were handed out to both Shyamalan’s Last Airbender – which our own Rob Keyes described as “a poorly constructed film with no sense of plot, character or emotion” – and the third Twilight film. The other three competitors in the category include the Jennifer ...

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The categories this year are pretty much the same as last year – Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor/Actress, Worst Actor/Actress, ...

Did you regret spending money on an awful movie this year? Are you aching to share your thoughts on the head-shaking, face-slapping, run-for-the-door flops of 2010? This is your chance – but not until we give you our choices of the 10 worst movies of 2010.

The box office had its fair share of behemoths this year, but not all were well-received by fans and critics. Poor movies come in all different styles – some are filled with explosions and fancy CGI meant to distract you from the weak plot, while others beg for laughs with humorless jokes. Those two types of theatrical failures, and more, are accounted for in our list.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: December 26th 2010

This week:

The box office meets the Little Fockers; we learn about the Madden Curse; Screen Gems asks About Last Night; Phillip Noyce cuts down on Salt; Christian Bale is a Nanjing Hero and Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn and Seth Meyers don’t know how Sarah Jessica Parker Does It.

Box Office

The Focker family were the box office champions over the weekend. Little Fockers,the third film in the “Meet The…” franchise banked an estimated $34 million over the weekend (read our review). The Ben Stiller starrer has now scored $48 million since its launch last week. The grosses aren’t amazing for this pricey comedy, but it should be profitable in the end for Universal.

Jeff Bridges continues to impress at the box office. True Grit (read our review) has opened to an impressive ...

Best & Worst Christmas Movie Releases of the Past 10 Years

There are several calendar dates throughout the year where studios rush to release all their big tentpole films in an attempt to maximize on the number of people who will see them, and each date corresponds with a major U.S. holiday – Memorial Day, 4^th of July, and Christmas.

Films released during Memorial Day and 4^th of July usually open on the exact dates of those holidays, while films being released for the Christmas season begin showing up in theaters anywhere from ten to fifteen days before December 25^th.

‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Trailer #2 Features (Too Much) Jack Black

Those who have tired of watching Jack Black do his manboy schtick onscreen will definitely want to take a pass on his latest film, a modern day take on Jonathan Swift’s classic satirical fantasy novel, Gulliver’s Travels.

A second trailer has emerged for Black’s latest, which finds the actor up to his usual comedic antics and looks to feature the kind of silly 3D and visual FX that should entertain younger moviegoers (maybe), but not really anyone else.

The new spin on Gulliver’s Travels refashions Lemuel Gulliver (Black) as a mail clerk and wannabe travel writer at a news publication. Poster Roundup: ‘Saw 3D,’ ‘The Tourist,’ & ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ [Updated]

New posters have been unveiled, including that for a film that will be very gory, Saw 3D, a film that will be very pretty, The Tourist, and a film, the new Gulliver’s Travels, that, frankly, we don’t really understand why it exists in the first place.

Saw 3D

Saw 3D will be the first of these pics to hit theaters and it promises to be the no-holds-barred finale of the long-running Saw franchise. The horror pic should deliver plenty of nasty blood and guts for its fans, while the trailer suggests that it will also use the 3D technology in an effective manner.

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

Gulliver’s Travels Has a Tiny Trailer & Set Pics

There is nothing better than a great classic novel. Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Three Musketeers and Gulliver’s Travels – all great pieces of classic literature that have been adapted into feature length films, some more than once. To some extent, all have enjoyed various degrees of success and critical acclaim.

Coming later this year is Gulliver’s Travels, the latest attempt to bring the nearly 250 year-old adventure novel by Irish writer Jonathan Swift. The Jack Black vehicle brings the titular character of Lemuel Gulliver into the 21^st century by making him a mail worker at a news publication. When the new guy he hires becomes his boss, Gulliver quickly lies about being an inspiring travel writer to both keep his job and impress the publication’s editor, Amanda Peet.

Black On His Back in ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Poster

There is little doubt Jack Black has gotten bigger and bigger over the last decade when it comes to Hollywood status. But the actor, who stands a modest five-foot-six, will never be as big as he is in his next big screen outing, Gulliver’s Travels.

The latest adaptation of Irishman Johnathan Swift’s classic novel, which was first published in 1726, is set to hit screens on December 22, 2010, and Fox has released the first official hi-res poster.

Differentiating itself from past incarnations of Swift’s work over the years, the film will be in 3-D - of course – and no doubt have a very Jack Black edge to it.

The producers certainly haven’t messed around when it comes to promotion though, sticking with the tried and true image of Gulliver and his travels. See for yourself:

Box Office

Iron Man 2 retained the top spot this weekend after grabbing just under $50 million worth of moviegoers’ cash over the weekend. The Tony Stark adventure has now grossed a spectacular $208 million domestic gross since its debut last weekend. Will it outgross the original?

Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood was in second place with just under $37 million for the weekend. While the debut isn’t overly impressive, it is solid for an action film aimed at a mature audience. Universal will be hoping that the film has legs, so that it can cover its expensive outlay ...

There are new posters for several upcoming movies – The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The A-Team, Despicable Me, Gulliver’s Travels, Burke and Hare, and Kane and Lynch – now available for you Screen Rant readers to check out.

First, Summit Entertainment has unleashed a new banner for this summer’s Eclipse, the latest entry in the Twilight series.

The third chapter in The Twilight Saga looks to be the darkest film yet, with a plot that involves an evil vampire’s quest for vengeance and the outbreak of war between the werewolves and the vampires. As with the first two Twilight films, don’t expect non-fans of the franchise to race out to see this one when it hits theaters.

Gulliver’s Travels & Narnia 3 Coming in 3D

The list of high-profile 3D films continues to grow as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well as Gulliver’s Travels are now expected to get the 3D treatment. Initially considered speculation, Coming Soon has confirmed that the two FOX properties will, in fact, undergo a 3D conversion.

Dawn Treader and Travels are both scheduled for December releases, stuffing two more 3D properties into an already bulging 3D holiday release set. Moviegoers will nearly be offered a new 3D film each week throughout November and December.

November 5th – Megamind

November 12th – Tangled

November 19th – Harry Potter: The Deathly Hollows (Part 1)

December 10th - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

December 17th – Tron Legacy

Another week means another wrap up.

This week:
We Tell No One about a new remake; Hollywood decides to tell us about The Day They Stole The Mona Lisa; Wolverine‘s Danny Huston is beyond the Poseidon adventure; Maria Bello and Craig T. Nelson are Company Men and Amanda Peet Travels with Jack Black.

1. Miramax will produce a remake of hit French thriller Tell No One.

The original film saw a French doctor discover that his dead wife may be alive – don’t get funny – I know that would mean she’s not really dead but get over it.

The film sounds like a 1990′s Hollywood thriller starring Michael Douglas or Harrison Ford (that’s not a bad thing). Jurassic Park producer and Spielberg protégé Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film.

The original film was based on a novel by Haralan Coben.

It’s amazing how different America and indeed the world have become since the last Mid Week Movie News Wrap Up. No I’m no talking about the US Presidential election – I’m talking about some of the nasty comments aimed at me following my Quantum of Solace review.

This week:

There’s movement on another Smokin’ Aces; Antonio Banderas is Dali; Jack Black Travels while Soderbergh goes Gilda and Gangster.

1. Joe Carnahan has stated on his official blog that a prequel to his action packed, star-filled film Smokin’ Aces is in the offing.

Old Smokin’ Joe said:

“Finally, some actual ‘Smokin Aces’ news. Universal has officially greenlit the
prequel and we are underway. Cameos will abound. Trust me.”

Does this mean Ben Affleck, Alicia Keys or Ryan Reynolds? Who knows, but the sequel will be going Direct to DVD so don’t expect a whole lot of top tier talent.
