Grindhouse is coming to DVD and Blu-ray October 5th and we've got a look at what's included in the 2-Disc Collector's Edition.

Grindhouse, the exploitation throwback double-feature from Robert Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino, is headed to DVD and Blu-ray – and we’ve got a detailed breakdown the special features and cover artwork.

What makes this release particularly notable is that it’s the first time Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof have appeared back-to-back on the same disc – mirroring the original theatrical presentation.

In fact, the first disc in the set is essentially the same presentation as Grindhouse‘s theatrical release (minus the Machete trailer which has, presumably, been excluded due to the upcoming feature film). There’s also two hours of bonus material which includes several featurettes for both Planet Terror and Death Proof, a behind the scenes look at each faux-trailer, deleted scenes, poster galleries, and more. While some of ...

Click to continue reading ‘Grindhouse’ DVD/Blu-ray Specs and Cover Art

Actor Rutger Hauer will star in the full-length version of Hobo With A Shotgun, based off director Jason Eisener's fake movie trailer from Grindhouse.

While he may not exactly be a household name, actor Rutger Hauer (best known for playing the renegade replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner) will play the lead in first-time director Jason Eisener’s B-movie pic, Hobo With A Shotgun.

Eisener won a contest at the 2007 SXSW to have his fake trailer for Hobo With A Shotgun attached to select prints of the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse. He is now set to turn Hobo With A Shotgun into a feature-length movie, a project slated to begin filming this week in Novia Scotia (Eisener’s country of origin).

Like Grindhouse, Hobo With A Shotgun pays homage to the low-budget exploitation flicks of the 1970s in terms of both style and content. The plot of the film revolves around a homeless man who takes it upon himself to become a justice-seeking, shotgun-wielding vigilante.

For the last two years, Robert Rodriguez fans have been clamoring for the full-length version of his faux-trailer Machete. Now, thanks to the guys at Latino Review, we finally have our first look at the movie’s script.

Apparently, the plot of Machete will focus on Danny Trejo cutting people up real good with big old knives (no surprise there). More specifically, Machete will have lots of double crosses, sexy women, and, oh yeah, a political assassination of some kind. Latino Review‘s guest reviewer (from the website ScriptShadow) was less than impressed with the script, saying it’s “Too silly. Too Simplistic. Too Dumb.” Overall, he gave it a “generous passing grade of C-.” Here’s an excerpt of his review.

The last we heard about the fake trailer from the exploitation-fest Grindhouse known as Machete was that it’s definitely being made into a movie. Robert Rodriguez has said the script is already done and they’re gearing up to getting it made. This was both surprising and relieving for us fans out there who have been dying to see a full movie version of it ever since Grindhouse came out.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who automatically assumed that Rodriguez would be the creative force behind the Machete movie, both writing the script and taking sole hold of the directing reigns (after all, he wrote and directed the fake trailer for which the movie will be based on). Well, we learned today that isn’t the case: Rodriguez will have a helping hand ...

Click to continue reading Robert Rodriguez Brings In Help To Direct ‘Machete’ Movie

However, as much as I dislike Roth as a filmmaker (he’s not quite at the level of Rob Zombie for me, but almost…), I will admit to loving his hilarious fake trailer called Thanksgiving that was part of the Grindhouse experience. On pure entertainment value alone, his was probably the best of the bunch.

Well, it appears that Roth liked it so much that he’s going to turn it into a low-budget full-length feature film, which he will film back-to-back with an at-present secret sci-fi blockbuster. He said this a ...

Click to continue reading Eli Roth Wants To Film Sci-Fi Blockbuster (w/ Bonus Gorefest)

Eventually they dropped Planet Terror and decided to only go with Death Proof on the big screen. I suppose that the studio thought that the Quentin Tarantino name was strong enough to put bodies in the seats, so they decided to release only his movie theatrically overseas and save Planet Terror for DVD only.

I won’t go into why Death Proof sucked again, but a few months ago I commented on the fact that for foreign audiences they were going to make the film even longer, and thus even more excruciatingly boring than it was as part of the double feature.

In my review of Grindhouse, I strongly urged viewers who were not die-hard Quentin Tarantino fans to leave after the first half of the double-feature, Planet Terror. The scenes involving nothing but inane conversation by the female leads almost literally put me in a coma due to the fact that they were excruciatingly boring and as far as I’m concerned, almost pointless. I say almost, because the point was to give us some insight into the characters, but the characters were not deep or interesting enough to warrant what felt like 30 minutes straight of inane conversation.

In any case, it seems that the high-brow journalists at the Cannes Film Festival are fawning all over Tarantino and his ghastly creation, and that the European release of Death Proof (since they’re splitting up Grindhouse into two films over there) is going to be even longer than the U.S. version:

Grindhouse has had a pretty rough weekend at the box office, earning only $11.6 million. The studio was expecting much bigger numbers for this three hour gore-filled extravaganza.

I suppose this is another example of the fact that big pre-opening buzz (especially on the internet), does not guarantee big box office numbers on opening weekend. Sure, 300 kicked butt and made tons of money, but that was a more mainstream movie than the extremely niche-targeting double feature homage to exploitative shlock B-movies from the 1970′s.

Personally I really enjoyed the first half of the double feature, Planet Terror (click here for my review), but I thought that Quentin Tarantino’s contribution, Death Proof was a total snoozer. A number of people walked out during Tarantino’s movie and I didn’t blame them at all. Despite many critics saying it was the “better” of the two films, I reviewed from the ...

Click to continue reading Grindhouse: Internet Buzz Does Not Equal Big Box Office Dollars

Short version: While Planet Terror was a wild ride and a retro blast, Death Proof was a crushing disappointment and absolute torture to sit through.

It really stinks that I have to give a rating to Grindhouse as one film, because the two movies within that make up the double feature are so incredibly on the opposite ends of the scale in terms of a viewing experience. While Robert Rodriguez’ Planet Terror was an absolute BLAST, Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof was excruciatingly boring. We’re talking boring to the point where if I didn’t have to review it I would have walked out.
