Both DC Comics and Marvel would have you think that big-budget, blockbuster films like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern and The Avengers are their only attempts to bring popular comic book characters into the live-action arena. They would like everyone to forget the sometimes absurd, ridiculous and often ugly reality: that there were numerous early – and failed – attempts to bring super heroes to both the big and small screens.

Over the next few pages you can read about these early superhero attempts and the actors who portrayed them on-screen. Some you may be familiar with, but we’ll bet you’ve never heard of many of them.

NOTE: This list doesn’t cover every instance of every superhero who has ever appeared on TV or ...

Click to continue reading Before They Were Movies: Early Attempts to Bring Superheroes to Life Onscreen

The cinematic adaptation of Marvel’s Deadpool has been stuck in development hell for some time now, a situation that doesn’t seem likely to immediately improve now that the character’s intense popularity has begun to wear off.

Still, Ryan Reynolds (who has been doing the rounds for Safe House) is optimistic that it’ll get made eventually.

In a recent interview, he talked about the proposed film — which apparently no longer has any connection to X-Men Origins: Wolverine – and discussed whether or not we’ll see a sequel to 2011′s greatest superhero flop, Green Lantern.

On the quality of Deadpool‘s current screenplay, courtesy of IGN, Reynolds said:

What really constitutes a “disappointment” is pretty subjective. To use a couple of examples: some people would say they were really let down by Captain America: The First Avenger or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, simply because the films weren’t as fantastic as they had hoped. Others, though, would argue those titles are still rock-solid films and that certain moviegoers’ expectations were so overblown that no motion picture could possibly meet them. But that’s a whole other discussion…

Today, we have a list of 10 films released in 2011 that simply failed to live up to the Screen Rant staff’s collective expectations. Bear in mind, this isn’t at all synonymous with a “worst of” list for 2011 – in fact, you may notice that a handful of the movies listed here actually received decent reviews from ...

Click to continue reading The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

Cartoon Network has aired the first episode of 'Green Lantern: The Animated Series'. Read our review to find out if the show is a beacon of light for Green Lantern’s dimmed status.

Cartoon Network has given fans a glimpse at the new Green Lantern: The Animated Series in a special hour-long episode that sets up the overall concept and provides an opportunity for the network to show off the slick, CG animated style of the show. While DC has normally done well by its heroes in the animated arena, Green Lantern: The Animated Series doesn’t quite live up to one series it is clearly attempting to follow.

Like the similarly titled Batman: The Animated Series, Green Lantern: TAS is being launched with a feature film still relatively fresh in the minds of its intended audience. After the critical drubbing and underwhelming financial gains of the Green Lantern movie, however, the world beyond the comic book pages has begun to look unduly harsh for the Emerald Knight.

Cartoon Network is promoting this week's premiere of 'Green Lantern: The Animated Series' and we have preview images, clips and descriptions of the 2-part premiere episode.

This week marks the premiere of the new Cartoon Network animated series based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern. Aptly titled Green Lantern: The Animated Series, the show is a departure from previous DC superhero cartoons (see: Batman: The Animated Series or Superman: The Animated Series) in the sense that the iconic animation style of gurus like Paul Dini and Bruce Timm have been given a sleek CGI makeover – a change that will inevitably entice some new fans, while also discouraging longtime fans of “classic style” DC Universe animation.

Questions about animation style aside, Cartoon Network and WB still have to promote this thing, and they have subsequently released a new press packet for the show, along with some promotional images. In case this is the first time you’re hearing about GL: TAS, we’ve added a trailer and some clips as a preview of what’s in store.

DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns has indicated that a live-action 'Green Lantern' sequel could still happen - and is talking up the forthcoming director's cut of the original film.

Director Martin Campbell’s live-action Green Lantern movie arrives on DVD and Blu-ray later this week. However, many a Lantern fan is really waiting to find out if Green Lantern 2 will actually happen… or is the franchise going to be left in stasis until Warner Bros. decides to try and (dare it be said) reboot the comic book franchise sometime in the future?

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes previously stated that the Green Lantern sequel’s status is (for now) uncertain. Nonetheless, DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns remains hopeful that a direct followup to Campbell’s adaptation will actually happen.

Quibbles about the thematic quality of Green Lantern aside (for now…), it was the film’s box office performance that was ultimately responsible for the sequel’s current condition. Campbell’s movie managed a worthy worldwide gross of about $220 million, ...

Click to continue reading Geoff Johns Hopes ‘Green Lantern 2′ Will Happen

Now that the 2011 Summer movie season is behind us, here's our look back at what we think were the best and most disappointing movies this year - along with a couple of very unexpected surprises.

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

Quibbles about whether Fast Five or Thor truly marked the start of Summer 2011 aside, the season started off with a bang at the box office – and eventually fizzled out in the end. So, here are the big questions: What ...

Click to continue reading Summer 2011 Movies: The Best, The Worst, & Some Surprises

The DC Comics Reboot – or the DC relaunch, or The New 52, or whatever you want to call it – is probably the biggest thing to happen to comic books since Crisis On Infinite Earths nearly 26 years ago. Not just in terms of changing the canonical status quo, but also in terms of the way comic books are sold.

Every DC Comics book from here on out will be digitally distributed “day and date.” This means that on the same day individual issues hit the shelves of your local comic store, they’ll also be available to read digitally on your iPad, your iPhone, your Android, and so forth. In a world where print is dying, the economy is drying up, and comic book sales are laughable, this ...

Click to continue reading DC Comics’ New 52 Reboot: The Complete Guide

Despite what you may have heard, the CEO of Time Warner is letting it be known that 'Green Lantern 2' is far from a certainty.

Now matter how you felt about Green Lantern [pauses for awkward silence] the news that Green Lantern 2 is moving forward has to be something of a surprise.

It’s no insult to say that Green Lantern was a box office letdown for Warner Bros., so early promises that Green Lantern 2 will be a better film have seemed overly optimistic – even to the biggest fans of the first film.

The common sense notion that a lot of people seem to be dancing around is that this is simply NOT how Hollywood works. Studios pour money into things they know, suspect, or at least gamble will work – they don’t double-down on a franchise that hasn’t shown good returns – typically speaking, that is.

Well, score one for common ...

Click to continue reading ‘Green Lantern 2′ Not Certain, Says Time Warner CEO

While Ryan Reynolds is uncertain about the status of 'Green Lantern 2', he promises that the 'Deadpool' movie is still in the works.

Those who didn’t get their Ryan Reynolds fix from Green Lantern can amend the situation by checking him (and the movie) out in The Change-Up this Friday (look for our review later this week).

Comic book fans are likely more interested in hearing about two upcoming Reynolds-centric projects – Green Lantern 2 and Deadpool. According to the actor, he’s still hopeful about getting to play Wade Wilson onscreen (again), but doesn’t know yet whether he’ll be donning CGI green duds as Hal Jordan for a second time.

Next on the agenda for Reynolds is the Dark Horse comic book adaptation, R.I.P.D. Afterwards, he may be teaming up with visual effects artist-turned-director Tim Miller on Deadpool, which will be a “total reboot” of the title character, following his appearance in X-Men Origins: ...

Click to continue reading Ryan Reynolds Offers ‘Green Lantern 2′ & ‘Deadpool’ Updates

[Not So Fast! Seems Green Lantern 2 isn't so certain after all. Details HERE]

Green Lantern has its share of ardent defenders, but it was critically unloved and financially unsuccessful, which is why it came as a bit of a shock that the studio was still considering a sequel – just a week after the film’s release.

That said, it’s somewhat less surprising that they’re planning to go in a completely different direction with the film. Warner Bros. Film Group President Jeff Robinov recently gave an update on Green Lantern 2, as well as The Flash screenplay and their superhero film slate for the next few years.

This week:

It’s a stand-off at the box office as Cowboys & Aliens has a showdown with The Smurfs- but the Cowboys win; Simon Pegg has A Fantastic Fear of Everything; Miles Teller, Justin Chon, Skylar Astin and Sarah Wright are 21 and Over; Val Kilmer and Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt gets interactive; John Cusack and Nic Cage re-team for The Frozen Ground and Antoine Fuqua gets ready to Storm Las Vegas.

A fierce battle was fought at the box office over the weekend, as Cowboys & Aliens faced off against The Smurfs (read our review). Cowboys won the weekend taking $36.4 million, while The Smurfs had to settle for second place with $35.6 million. This is good news for The Smurfs, but bad news for Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. The pricey sci-fi/western combo was expected to bank in the region of $40 million on its ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: July 31, 2011 [Updated]

Another year of Comic-Con has officially come to and an end. You’ve read our live blogs of the panels, interviews with your favorite actors, and have even checked out our massive cosplay gallery – but that doesn’t mean we don’t have one more trick up our sleeve.

What’s better than asking people to pose for pictures while dressed up as a superhero? Creepily taking their picture when they’re not paying attention, of course – and that’s exactly what we did. With camera in tow, we busted out the cardboard box and went all Solid Snake on Comic-Con’s numerous superheros.

What with all the massive movie, television, and comic book announcements at Comic-Con 2011, it was easy to overlook some of the animated superhero announcements, both in film and television.

DC, as per usual, had a pretty large showing with Green Lantern: The Animated Series video clips and announcements about their 2012-2013 schedule – including the animated adaptations of The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League: Doom, and The Killing Joke.

But Marvel’s slate, which included footage of Ultimate Spider-Man, was nothing to scoff at, either.

The 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International is just about here, which means that we (and a few of you readers) need to start plotting our itineraries and map routes that will help navigate the mad halls of the San Diego Convention Center in time to make all of those highly-anticipated panels.

This post will detail the movie-related panels that will held at Comic-Con ’11. You can find schedules for any of the TV-related panels over on our official Comic-Con ’11 Coverage Page.

The panels posted below are ones we’ll be scrambling to attend. Most of them are of course related to movies, but there is always room for some comic-related stuff too – after all, comics and movies are like close cousins these days .

That said, included in the ...

Click to continue reading Complete Comic-Con 2011 Movie Panel Schedule

Check your calendar, because Comic-Con 2011 will soon be upon us. With over 70 different TV panels confirmed for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, finding out when and where you’re favorite television series will be appearing is definitely easier said than done.

On top of that, some of Comic-Con’s fan-favorite TV series have been upgraded from the hallowed Ballroom 20, and will now be gracing the 5,000-seat Hall H. So, this year you won’t be able to simply sit in one room all day to catch many of the major television events has to offer at Comic-Con.

Fortunately, we’ve attempted to take some of the confusion out of your Comic-Con experience with a complete schedule of all the TV panels. While some series have yet to announce specific details, the ...

Click to continue reading Complete Comic-Con 2011 TV Panel Schedule [Updated]

Despite receiving a number of negative reviews and underperforming at the box office, 'Green Lantern 2' is apparently on the way.

[Not So Fast! Seems Green Lantern 2 isn't so certain after all. Details HERE]

Green Lantern has received fairly poor reviews – it’s at 26% on Rotten Tomatoes – and it ranked third at the box office this past weekend after Bad Teacher. To say that the film has been a disappointment for Warner Bros. is a bit of an understatement.

Yet, despite all of that, the studio is apparently moving forward with Green Lantern 2.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources at Warner Bros. have called Green Lantern a “slight disappointment,” which, in executive speak, means it’s an enormous disappointment. Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution, has said on record that the superhero film was expected to experience a ...

Click to continue reading ‘Green Lantern 2′ Moving Ahead Despite Box Office Drop

This week:

Cars 2 hits first gear and takes the top spot at the box office, while Bad Teacher has a good start; Warren Beatty is Howard Hughes; Charlie Day joins del Toro’s Pacific Rim; Geoff Johns talks a Green Lantern franchise (hey - don’t laugh) and will The Kings of Leon serenade James Bond?

Box Office

This weekend Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 took pole position at the box office, zooming ahead of the nearest competition in the form of Bad Teacher. The CGI car pic raced up an estimated $68 million to cross the finish line ahead of the original Cars’ $60 million debut. The film has received mixed reviews (read ours here) but it should be very profitable by the time it ends its run, especially once merchandising is factored in.
