Green Lantern Screenwriter Talks Script, Cast & New Characters

Marc Guggenheim has been hard at work on the script for the upcoming live-action Green Lantern movie for some time now. Along with writing partners Michael Green and Greg Berlanti, Guggenheim has been trying to find the perfect balance between a script that captures the nature of the comic book character, while still providing an epic interstellar adventure audiences everywhere will enjoy.

Guggenheim has been on the blog-circuit recently, talking about the latest revision of The Green Lantern that he, Green and Berlanti turned in to Warner Bros. last week.  The writer also hinted to MTV News about the still-announced role of Green Lantern/Hal Jordan, while also dropping the news that a brand new Green Lantern character will be appearing in the film.

Green Lantern Screenwriter Updates Movie Progress

Of all the comic book movies in development, perhaps none is as anticipated as the big screen adaptation of Green Lantern. While we’ve been on top of all the latest Green Lantern news here at Screen Rant, including the film’s $150M budget and casting rumors galore, there hasn’t much in the way of official news from Warner Brothers on the project’s progress.

Luckily, SCI FI Wire recently had the chance to sit down with screenwriter Marc Guggenheim, who filled in fans on some of the latest details.

Bradley Cooper Recruited Into The A-Team?

Rumors for the upcoming A-Team action film have been running rampant recently with speculation that Common (who’s in this week’s Terminator Salvation) is in talks to play the role made famous by Mr. T, B.A. Baracus, and Chris Pine as Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck but instead wanting to play the crazy Capt. H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock.

Another Green Lantern Rumor: Shawn Roberts

It’s almost a running gag now - How many actors can be rumored to play the Green Lantern before an official announcement is made? It’s amazing how Marvel’s Thor movie is undergoing the same crazy speculation and on the same time line. Even more coincidental, is that Green Lantern’s new pushed-back release date is a few mere weeks away from Thor’s pushed back date.

Two days ago, Bradley Cooper was rumored to be the leading candidate to play Hal Jordan in the upcoming DC superhero movie and in that article, I briefly ran through many of the big names also rumored to be in the running to play the part.

Green Lantern & Sucker Punch Pushed To 2011

Delays, delays and more delays!

Two movies we’ve been hearing quite a bit of updates about in recent times are being pushed back from next year into 2011. These two movies are Green Lantern and Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.

A few weeks back, Screen Rant reported on the hefty $150 million budget that was being allocated by Warner Brothers for the production of Green Lantern. In that article, Screen Rant writer Kofi discussed the strange December release date for the Green Lantern movie that was set to open in December of 2010 and hoped that we wouldn’t get close to that date and see it mysteriously get pushed back to the following summer (a la Harry Potter 6).

Latest Green Lantern Rumor: Bradley Cooper As Hal Jordan?

Latest Green Lantern Rumor: Bradley Cooper As Hal Jordan?

Wow, will the Green Lantern casting rumors ever end? Seems like the DC movie characters are subject to just as much speculation as the Marvel movies (we’re seeing similar rampant speculation with Thor).

To sum up some of the actors rumored to play the emerald knight so far - in October of last year we heard Ryan Gosling may play the part but it didn’t come to be. Then, earlier this year, we heard the thankfully-debunked Anton Yelchin rumor in February, followed by the Chris Pine rumor in March, and then Brian Austin Green in April. To follow the monthly rumor trend, for May our latest Green Lantern actor rumor is for… Bradley Cooper.

Green Lantern Tagged With $150 Million Budget

When script details about the upcoming live-action Green Lantern movie hit the ‘Net last summer, it was clear that the film was going to be epic in scale. The script had kick-ass battles set on both Earth and in space, requiring a whole F/X bonanza in order to bring the emerald power rings of the Green Lanterns (and all the rings’ crazy manifestations) to life on the big-screen.

Well it seems as though Warner Bros. isn’t backing down from challenges of the Green Lantern script: The Hollywood Reporter is…well, reporting that Green Lantern’s budget has been tagged at $150 million, roughly the same amount of dough Warner Bros. dished out for Watchmen.

Brian Austin Green, who plays Derek Reese in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, wants to play Hal Jordan in the upcoming DC superhero movie and he wants you thoughts on the matter.

Green is most famous for his role on Beverly Hills 90210 but more recently made a splash with his kick-ass role in the Terminator television series. With the second season of the show finishing up this week and no third season announced, the actor is trying to push his way into the movie business with a major role in the next potential DC franchise, The Green Lantern.

Captain Kirk May Be The Green Lantern

It was just a few hours ago when Screen Rant reported on the production start-date for Green Lantern which is set to begin shooting this fall. In that article, our writer Kofi mentioned that Warner Bros. has to quickly make a move on casting its title character for the movie.

Well, in a timely fashion, Warner Brothers has responded (not to us but I like to think that) and they just may have found their Hal Jordan in Captain Kirk… well the new Captain Kirk… Chris Pine that is!

Green Lantern Begins Filming This Fall

Production Weekly is reporting that the big-screen adaptation of Green Lantern is all set and scheduled to start filming in mid-September 2009 at an Australian location. This new start-date is a bit later than the previously reported Spring 2009 go-date for the film, but hey, at least things are getting underway.

However, this new Fall start-date still doesn’t leave much time for the filmmakers to finally decide on which actor is going to be playing the titular role of Green Lantern. Warner Bros., you guys better get on that!

First Look: ‘Green Lantern: First Flight’

First Look: ‘Green Lantern: First Flight’

DC Comics has long been my favorite in the animation game. I loved the Batman and Superman animated series that ran during the 90’s; I also loved Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, which ran during the early years of 2000.

I’ve remained a fan of the more recent DC Universe direct-to-DVD animated features, which include Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: New Frontier, and DC’s latest animated feature, Wonder Woman. And, at first glance, it’s looking like I’m going to enjoy the next offering from DC Universe, Green Lantern: First Flight, when it hits DVD/Blu-ray this summer.

[UPDATE: Thankfully, this Green Lantern rumor has been debunked.]

Just when the Green Lantern movie was starting to sound cool - epic script and Martin Campbell as director, comes a rumor that is NOT good news. It seems that for some bizarre reason, Warner Bros. wants to go “young” on the Green Lantern movie. The word from Latino Review is that one actor being considered to wear the emerald and black tights is:

Anton Yelchin.

Martin Campbell, the man who helped 007 get his swagger back, is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to direct the upcoming live-action Green Lantern flick.

With movies like Casino Royale, Goldeneye, and the two Zorro films under his belt, Martin Campbell has proven that he can take established heroes and turn them into box office hits. But will he be able to do the same for Green Lantern?

David Goyer: Warner Bros. Putting DC Movies On Hold

In an IESB interview for The Unborn, director/writer David Goyer says all DC properties are currently on hold for the time being in regards to film development. This comes as confirmation of what we’ve previously suspected.

When probed about Supermax and Justice League, Goyer had this to say.

“A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out, they’re going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause at the moment.”

Including the two movies mentioned, Superman and Green Lantern would also be on hold. With an across the board freeze, Warner Bros. may be looking to create a cohesive DC Universe.

Update On Superman Appearance In ‘Green Lantern’

So we here at Screen Rant are pretty good at thinking two steps ahead of the suits in Hollywood. That is to say, we can usually predict their next move before even they know what it is.

Screen Rant writer Jamie Williams has been the all-seeing, all-knowing, Oracle of everything Superman related. For proof of his precognitive prowess, just take a look at his early prediction that Superman Returns star Brandon Routh will most likely re-don the red and blue suit for the next supes film (which is still in the pipeline somewhere).

Will Brandon Routh Appear In The Green Lantern Movie?

Over the last 48 hours, we’ve heard the news that Ryan Gosling is in the running for Green Lantern and that Brandon Routh will continue to play Superman/Clark Kent in the Superman reboot.

Considering that Warner Brothers is aiming to have the next Superman film out by summer 2012 (a solid 4 years away), there are those wondering if keeping Routh is a bit premature. Normally, I would agree with that logic.

However if you will all remember, boys and girls. According to a script review from two months back, the character of Clark Kent makes an appearance in Green Lantern(!)

Warner Bros Finally Gets Serious About DC Comics

It has been a long time in coming, but it now appears that Warner Bros. has finally decided to make use of their stable of DC Comics characters.

Following the financial and critical success of The Dark Knight Warner Bros. has realized that they are sitting on a gold mine - not only from box office receipts, but also from DVD, television, video games and other sources of revenue.

Last month the company held a strategy meeting in an attempt to figure out what was needed in order for them to match Marvel Comics in the comic book movie stakes, and it would appear that they have finally come up with a plan.

Flash And Green Lantern Spin-Offs Have Directors

Warner Bros. seems to be hot under the collar to get a batch of superhero movies out the door. Although the Justice League movie seems to be mired in casting hell and surrounded by rumors of being more like a Teen Titans movie, the studio has apparently locked in directors for movie versions of both The Flash and Green Lantern.

The word is that these are supposed to be spin-offs The Flash is supposed to be a spin-off of the Justice League film, so I can only assume that once they finally get that one cast that they’ll have their leads for one of these two movies.

A Blessing Or A Curse: John Stewart Confirmed As JLA’s Green Lantern?

With casting for the JLA film rumored to be well under way, news has leaked to suggest the superhero team will be graced with the presence of a Green Lantern - contrary to reports from a few days ago - but that the character will likely be John Stewart. While not officially confirmed, the report derives from casting information in which one black actor is called for, among primarily caucasian males. So, the question is, is this good or bad news? Is a third-tier, supporting Lantern better than no Lantern at all? Could Stewart be the rumored team member to die by the film’s finale, leading to a juicier stand-alone Green Lantern film in the future? For once, I’m open to almost anything.
