Vic Armstrong is something of a movie legend. You may not know the name, but you’ve undoubtedly seen his work. Armstrong started out as a movie stuntman, working on the Gregory Peck film Arabesqe, before he began his longstanding association with the James Bond franchise in You Only Live Twice (he was the first ninja down the rope into Blofeld’s volcanic lair). He also doubled for Christopher Reeve in Richard Donner’s Superman before moving on to become a stunt co-ordinator and then second unit director. Armstrong is also a director in his own right, with an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the Dolph Lundgren film Joshua Tree to his credit.

Over the years Armstrong has worked with many of Hollywood’s greatest; from old school directors like David Lean and Stanley ...

Click to continue reading Interview: Legendary Movie Stuntman Vic Armstrong (Part 1)

Four solid picks hit shelves this week on DVD and Blu-ray. The two new releases are not destined to be remembered like the two re-releases, but they held their own on the big screen earlier this year.

Those dreadful first quarter theater releases are finally making their way to home video, but at least this week’s pair are two of the better ones. The Green Hornet and The Dilemma hope to add a little humor to your week.

Miramax is bringing back the Gecko Brothers with the Blu-ray re-release of Robert Rodriguez’s cult classic From Dusk Till Dawn. On the other side of the spectrum is the airy, metaphorical drama What Dreams May Come.

The following titles can now be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

Thriller The Roommate topped a weak box office over the weekend with an estimated gross of $15.6 million. The low budget Screen Gems film should be profitable once it finishes its run – which shouldn’t be too far in the future.

The weak gross for the 3D adventure shows that the third dimension and Cameron’s name will only go so far at the box office.

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s No Strings Attached topped the box office over the weekend with a decent $20.3 million debut. The R-rated comedy surpassed the start of recent adult-themed comedies, a major factor in this was more than likely Portman’s Black Swan publicity blitz.

Michel Gondry’s first big Hollywood action movie, The Green Hornet, came out this past week to a fairly positive box office response — bringing in an estimated $40 million over the holiday weekend.

Making the film was a process of discovery for Gondry, a director accustomed to helming smaller, more Avant-garde films. The Green Hornet propelled him head-first into the sometimes hyperbolic world of genre films, a world in which the fans have definitive opinions – and are not shy about sharing them.

Today we bring you the portion of our interview with Evan in which we discuss what he, and writing partner (and The Green Hornet star) Seth Rogen, discovered about the (sometimes) erratic temperaments of fanboys. Goldberg also reveals why one persistent IMDB commenter received multiple personal emails from both Seth and himself.

The American car: few things define an individual better than the car they drive and nothing better defines a movie or TV series than the car the lead character drives. For years people from all walks of life were known by their cars and that recognition spilled over into TV shows and movies in a big way.

Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s cars played a big part in just about every TV series and film – to the point that audiences would see the car and immediately associate it with a particular (entertainment) brand. Sometimes the car was just an iconic mode of transportation meant to show the societal class of the person driving it – like Fred Sanford’s beat up 1951 Ford truck in Sanford & Son, Colt Seavers’ early 1980s model GMC ...

Click to continue reading 25 Most Iconic Cars From TV & Movies

Here’s our weekend box office report and various movie news tidbits we may have missed.

This week:

The Green Hornet stings the top of the box office; Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg say I Hate You Dad; Robert Downey Jr. talks sequels and Sherlock Holmes; Jeffrey Dean Morgan opens the Dibbuk Box for Sam Raimi; Nick Stahl is under Locke & Key and get ready for an Alien Sleeper Cell.

Box Office

Seth Rogen’s often delayed The Green Hornet (read our review here) will top the box office over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The film which also stars Jay Chou as sidekick Kato should pull in an estimated $40.5 million over the holiday weekend ($34 million for the three days). While it’s not a disastrous result, it is a bit on the low side for a $100 million plus budgeted superhero film. It’ll be interesting to see how this holds up in the weeks to come.

Sidekicks have been a part of television and movie history since the very beginning of Hollywood’s timeline. Going back as far as Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid where the Tramp’s sidekick was a young Jackie Coogan as ”the kid”, sidekicks have been a popular and necessary part of any hero’s known associates.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the first sidekick appeared in cinema history, but one thing is for sure, most leading men or women wouldn’t be near as interesting, and sometimes, as effective without them. Recently Hollywood has made a legitimate effort to bring back the classic sidekick in shows like No Ordinary Family and movies like Kick-Ass and of course, The Green Hornet. But in order for the sidekick to make a proper return there are some questions we must answer: Why are ...

Click to continue reading Return of the Sidekick – The Time is Now

Screen Rant’s Vic Holtreman reviews The Green Hornet

Hey, are you old enough to remember when everyone freaked out about Michael Keaton being cast as Batman because he was a comedic actor, didn’t have the look nor the stature to play the iconic masked vigilante – but in the end it turned out to be a daring bit of casting and pretty damned cool?

Well that didn’t happen with The Green Hornet.

The Green Hornet movie has a (troubled) history going back to mid-2007 when rumors first floated that Seth Rogen would be playing the titular hero (and writing the script). Initially Stephen Chow (director of the hysterically funny Kung Fu Hustle) was set to play the role of Kato ...

Click to continue reading The Green Hornet Review

Canadian comedy writing duo, and longtime friends, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, have plenty on their plates with their adaptation of The Green Hornet opening in this week; The Neighborhood Watch and Sausage Party in development; and The Goon wrapping production in Canada.
We had the chance to sit down with Evan Goldberg and talk all things Green Hornet, fanboy culture and Canadian comedy, so stay tuned for the full interview. In the interim, here are some updates about Rogen and Goldberg’s impending projects.

The second international trailer for 'The Green Hornet' has been released. Is this film looking better or worse with every new trailer?

Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet has been fighting an uphill battle since its inception (no Chris Nolan jokes, please), but Sony Pictures did the comic book pic a favor by releasing a second U.S. trailer that improved significantly upon the first theatrical preview.
