Warner Bros. has announced its new (and reshuffled) release date schedule, which concerns two Oscar baiting titles, one intriguing science-fiction project, and a sequel that many will be surprised to hear is even being made.

The films in question are: J.
When Robert Downey Jr. had to call it quits on Alfonso Cuarón’s expensive sci-fi thriller, Gravity, it left us wondering: who else could make for a smooth-talking astronaut that survives a cataclysmic onslaught of satellite debris in space?

That may not be the most common of character tropes, but it seems that a fitting replacement for the Iron Man/Sherlock Holmes star has been found – namely, Hollywood’s silver-haired (Fantastic Mr.) fox himself, George Clooney.

Robert Downey Jr. has officially left Alfonso Cuarón's 'Gravity'. So who will star opposite Academy Award-winner Sandra Bullock?

Back in October, we reported that Robert Downey Jr. was potentially leaving Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming sci-fi film. Now, it would appear the Iron Man star has definitely left the production.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Downey Jr. has officially stepped away from Gravity to produce and potentially star in How to Talk to Girls. That film, which would also be produced by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), is based on a book of the same name from nine-year-old author Alec Greven.

As of now, Downey’s potential involvement with How to Talk to Girls has not changed his commitment to Oz: The Great and Powerful. The actor is still reportedly attached to star in Sam Raimi’s take on the classic Wizard of Oz tale (which is rumored to ...

Click to continue reading Robert Downey Jr. Out of ‘Gravity’; Circling ‘How to Talk to Girls’

Last week it was quietly reported that Sandra Bullock has indeed signed on to star in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, a film that has struggled for months to land an actress for its pivotal lead role.

Robert Downey Jr. signed on for Gravity earlier this year as well, but he may no longer be up for playing Bullock’s fast-talking copilot in the big-budget, sci-fi venture due to his increasingly jam-packed schedule.

Gravity was originally scheduled to begin filming in London this past summer, which would’ve allowed Downey to complete his work on the project before he departed for Sherlock Holmes 2.

A new dawn is upon us and with it comes even more casting drama concerning Alfonso Cuarón’s undeniably ambitious sci-fi project, Gravity, and the casting of its female protagonist.

Natalie Portman was “in active negotiations” last week to star in Gravity, but has officially confirmed, via her representatives, that she is no longer pursing that lead role – which means that Warner Bros.’ top choice, Sandra Bullock, is the front runner for the part once more.

Casting Bullock certainly makes sense when you look at it from a studio official’s point of view: She’s an A-list actress who made a comeback in 2009 with back-to-back financial hits in the form of The Proposal and The Blind Side, the latter of which earned her a Best Actress Oscar as well (like most moviegoers, we’re pretending ...

Click to continue reading Portman Passes On ‘Gravity’; Bullock Remains Top Candidate

Actress Natalie Portman may play the lead in Alfonso Cuarón’s 'Gravity' after all. Will the film have to be redesigned to a lower-budget project if Portman signs on?

Director Alfonso Cuarón’s new sci-fi venture, Gravity, sounds promising but has struggled to secure a leading lady – which is a pivotal role to fill, since the gal in question will be the only character onscreen for most of the film (a la Tom Hanks in Castaway).

Warner Bros. reportedly wanted Sandra Bullock to star as the female protagonist in Gravity after Angelina Jolie chose to pass on the project. Natalie Portman was offered the lead a week or so prior to the announcement about Bullock, and is now – according to Heat Vision – “in active negotiations” to take on the part.

Portman has been in the limelight of late as she continues to gain accolades for her tour-de-force performance in possible Superman director Darren Aronofsky’s ...

Click to continue reading Natalie Portman ‘In Active Negotiations’ To Star In ‘Gravity’

Last week we thought that it was pretty much a lock that Natalie Portman was going to star in the coveted lead role in Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming sci-fi film, Gravity.

After Angelina Jolie left the project (in spite of the studio’s best attempts to keep her on-board), the go-ahead was given to Cuarón to send out an offer to Portman (she’s been impressing people with her performance in Black Swan) in an attempt to snag a half-way bankable leading lady (although Portman is definitely not as bankable as Jolie).

However, it was just an offer that was given to Portman, one which she didn’t immediately accept. Supposedly she was going to read the Gravity script and decide by the end of this week. Well apparently the studio won’t mind too much if she turns the project down, as their top choice is ...

Click to continue reading Sandra Bullock Being Considered for ‘Gravity’

With the exception of the much sought-after lead role in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo remake (which ultimately went to relative newcomer Rooney Mara), the lead female role in Alfonso Cuarón’s $80 million sci-fi thriller Gravity has been one of the most desired female roles in recent memory.

Angelina Jolie was originally attached to star in the film but Jolie recently dropped out in order to work on her directorial debut. Soon after her unfortunate departure the studio began frantically looking for another actress to replace her, but finding one with the same box office draw as Jolie was going to be a tough challenge indeed.

Many actresses were considered, including Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively (those two apparently went head-to-head for the role not long ago), Sandra Bullock, Marion Cotillard and Naomi Watts (to name ...

Click to continue reading Natalie Portman Offered Lead Role in Cuarón’s ‘Gravity’

Despite being offered a mountain of cash and the opportunity to work with one of the greatest mainstream directors alive today — Children of Men was the best sci-fi film of the last decade, if not one of the best films ever — Jolie is too busy prepping her directorial debut, a Bosnian love story circa 1990-something.

Gravity, scripted by Cuarón and his son Jonas, is about two characters—a team leader (Downey Jr.) and a female lead—who get stranded in space after their space station explodes, killing the remainder of their team. The bulk of the film is about ...

Click to continue reading Angelina Jolie Passes On Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’

Alfonso Cuarón’s space-set thriller Gravity may have started out a mere blip on the radar of upcoming movie projects, but as soon as Robert Downey Jr. became attached, more and more people started taking notice.

The thriller revolves around a group of U.S. astronauts – led by a medical engineer and “a talkative ‘mile-a-minute’ veteran” – who are on a mission to fix the Hubble telescope. Events take a turn for the dangerous when several Russian satellites begin to implode and force the U.S. team to race back to Earth in order to survive the resulting avalanche of debris.

The last we heard, Downey Jr’s Iron Man 2 co-star, Scarlett Johansson, was attached to play the lead in Gravity.
It looks as though moviegoers won’t have to wait until The Avengers is released to see Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. reunited on film. The Iron Man 2 costars are in line to play the leads in director Alfonso Cuaron’s “race from space” thriller, Gravity.

Johansson has reportedly made a verbal commitment to star in Gravity, a project which Downey became associated with back in May. The Lost in Translation star will take on the role that Angelina Jolie was at one point under consideration to play.

Box Office

Toy Story 3 did the massive business that everybody anticipated. The second animated sequel in the fifteen year old franchise should score a massive $111 million over the weekend. The Disney/Pixar film has the added bonus of showing on 3D screens, but it should also enjoy strong legs and play quite well into the summer.

Well, here’s a pretty significant piece of news on more than one account:

An official statement has been released, revealing that Warner Bros. has signed a huge deal with IMAX to release up to 20 of their movies in that format from 2010 to 2013. And buried within this news is a detail that shakes things up a bit when it comes to the long-awaited adaptation of The Hobbit in that it’s now slated to come out a lot further down the road than we expected.

Along with the announcement of the WB/IMAX deal comes a bunch of release dates for each of the movies that are part of it. Amongst those is The Hobbit, which we thought was going to come out in December of 2011 (well ...

Click to continue reading The Hobbit Set For 2012 as WB & IMAX Sign 20 Film Deal

To say that Robery Downey Jr. in currently one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood is a bit of an understatement – he’s set to return as Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 on May 7, he has a new comedy titled Due Date that’ll hit theaters this November, and he has two other big-budget 3D projects (Gravity and Sherlock Holmes 2) that are set to begin production later this year.

The popular actor found time recently – in the midst of the Iron Man 2 promotional campaign no less – to chat with Moviehole about some of his new and upcoming films.

Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to star in Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D science fiction film, Gravity, replacing Angelina Jolie. How will a male lead affect the project's script?

At first it looked like Alfonso Cuaron’s science fiction film Gravity was going to star Angelina Jolie, but those rumors were soon quashed after the actress parted ways with the project. Now it seems that Iron Man himself – Robert Downey Jr is set to star in the 3D film, as the actor is now said to be in negotiations to headline.

According to Deadline:

[Update: Jolie has dropped Gravity and is Wanted 2 still alive? ]

Back at the start of summer ’09 we got word that Angelina Jolie would be returning for Wanted 2 – [SPOILER ALERT!!!] even though her character in film, Fox, ended up having her brains blown out.

The whole “Isn’t she dead?” question was the first on many fans’ lips; however, Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov insisted that an explanation for resurrecting Jolie’s character would (somehow) be logically established.

Well, it looks like Angelina managed to retain some cognitive abilities after that head shot did its damage, because she has jumped ship from Wanted 2 and hopped aboard a space-thriller called Gravity, which is being helmed by one of the best directors in the business at the moment, Alfonso Cuarón (Children of ...

Click to continue reading Jolie Leaves Wanted 2 For ‘Gravity’ [Updated]
