Grand Theft Auto

Synopsis

The crime adventure series Grand Theft Auto (GTA) first launched in 1997, and after five iterations (and several spin-offs) has become one of the biggest video games of all time. The series was created by David Jones and Mike Dailly with brothers Dan and Sam Houser, Leslie Benzies, and Aaron Garbut working on the later titles. Rockstar North serves as the game series developer, with Rockstar Games as its publisher.

In each game, the player takes on the role of a criminal that must rise through the ranks of organized crime. The games are mostly set in fictional American cities, modelled after real cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.

They are open world games set in sandbox environments that allow players to explore the place on foot or in a variety of vehicles (mostly stolen). Different protagonists are featured in the instalments and are often patterned after and voiced by celebrities such as Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper, Samuel L. Jackson, James Woods, Debbie Harry, Phil Collins, Axl Rose, and Peter Fonda.

Despite the many controversies surrounding the game series, it continues to be one of the most popular video game franchises. Grand Theft Auto is 2008 Guinness World Records’ Most Controversial Video Game Series and it holds the record for being the Fourth Highest Selling Video Game Franchise coming after Mario Brothers, Pokemon and Tetris respectively.

The first installment was released in 1997 with the latest installment released in 2013. Fans of the franchise have been anticipating another release. Talks about it have been making the rounds for some time but no official announcement from the makers and publishers of the franchise has been made yet.
