I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.

Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

I won’t waste any time just now giving my thoughts on who I think should have won and so forth, why don’t we just get straight to the awards before we move onto that? So without further ado here are the full list of nominees and winners from the 67th Annual Golden Globes Awards:

* Jeremy Piven, Entourage

Here’s just a few of my thoughts on what and who won:

Finally Michael C. Hall gets his long overdue Golden Globe for his performance on Dexter (this was his fifth nomination!), as well as John Lithgow winning for his chilling portrayal of the Trinity Killer on the same show. It was nice to see Jeff Bridges get that sort of recognition for Crazy Heart, even though I think everyone expected it to be George Clooney who would win.

Speaking of which, Up in the Air only won one award (Best Screenplay) and I suspect Jason Reitman, Clooney and others were a bit miffed once the whole thing was over. Inglourious Basterds should have won more (Christoph Waltz Best Supporting Actor award was a no-brainer), as should The Hurt Locker (it didn’t get any!); which brings us to two big awards, Best Drama and Best Director: Avatar came out the victor on both accounts. Personally, I love the film, but did it deserve it more than other smaller films like Up in the Air or The Hurt Locker? I’ll let you guys duke it out in the comments section

Lastly, the highlights for me were Michael C. Hall winning, Robert Downey Jr’s hilarious “non-thanking” speech, and Martin Scorsese winning the Cecile B. Demille Award – well deserved, sir.

Thoughts on the winners and the overall show of this year’s Golden Globes?

The folks over at Cinematical were good enough to be up early this December morning to update folks in real-time with the 67th Annual Golden Globe nominations. Things are officially gearing up to the Awards season early next year, all leading up to the “big ones” – the Oscars. The Golden Globes are arguably the second-biggest awards out there, and we have this year’s nominations right here.

I’d say for the most part that the nominations are quite predictable. Not that that’s a bad thing – if it’s clear to all what the best movies, performances, scores etc are, then it should result in them getting nominated (that’s the way it SHOULD work, anyway – hey-oh! ). Before I get to some of my thoughts on who’s been nominated, check out the nominations list yourself, again thanks to Cinematical (as well as GoldenGlobes.org):

On the movie nominations: As anyone who’s read a few of my posts here at Screen Rant probably knows, I’m a huge fan of Quentin Tarantino and I’m so pleased his brilliant Inglourious Basterds is getting the recognition it deserves, gaining nominations for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Supporting Actor (Drama) for the magnificent performance of Christoph Waltz and both Best Director and Best Screenplay for Tarantino himself.

Other interesting things to note about the movies is that Avatar is getting a fair bit of recognition (could we see the same thing at the Oscars, even resulting in a semi-repeat of Cameron’s success with Titanic?); Jason Reitman is having success after Juno with Up in the Air; and what’s this with the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man NOT getting nominated in the Best Motion Picture category (it’s in the top 5 of the year for me, easily).

On the TV nominations: As someone who holds Lost up as the greatest TV show on the air (of all time, if I’m being completely honest), I’m sad to see it only get one nomination (Michael Emerson for his brilliant portrayal of Ben Linus). As for the major category, Best Drama Series, I’m torn between Dexter and True Blood – the finale of Dexter this past weekend makes me lean towards that, but both are fantastic and I’d be happy if either won.

Anyway, enough from me, what are YOUR thoughts on the Golden Globes nominations for this year? Obvious choices? Any surprises in there? What are some of the films and TV shows you would nominate?

The Golden Globes will air on Sunday January 17th, 2010, on NBC.

This week:

The box office says This Is It; The Tourist finally gets its bags packed; Billy Bob Thornton and Dwayne Johnson go Faster; Ricky Gervais hosts The Golden Globes and DeNiro and Stiller are hanging out with the Little Fockers.

Box Office

Michael Jackson’s This Is It topped the box office over the Halloween weekend with an estimated $21 million. The concert film has made $32 million in the US in the five days since it opened. It’s an okay start for the movie, but not the huge debut that Sony was hoping for. It’s doing twice as well overseas and has brought in about $100MM worldwide so far.

Paranormal Activity scared-up another $16.5 million over the spooky weekend giving the $11, 000 budgeted film a mind-boggling $84.7 million total. Ka-ching!

Law Abiding Citizen banked another $7 million to give the Gerard Butler/ Jamie Foxx flick a solid $51 million.

The grand total for Vince Vaughn’s Couples Retreat now stands at $86 million after taking another $6 million.

Saw VI plunged 60% this weekend. The fright flick has taken just $22 million since its debut last weekend. Saw films normally open far above that figure!

Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are took in $5 million for a $61 million total, while The Stepfather nabbed another $3.4 for a $24 million total.

Astro Boy grossed another $3 million for a pretty shocking $10 million cumulative gross while Amelia took in the same number this weekend for a grand total of $8 million – yikes!

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant saw its franchise hopes sink with a weekend take of just under $3million. With $10 million in the pot so far it looks like fans will have to read the books rather than check out the adventures on the silver screen.

Movie News

1. GK Films has signed on to finance and produce Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Tourist. The remake of the French film Anthony Zimmer will star Angelina Jolie and Sam Worthington.

The Sony Pictures film will start shooting in February.

The Tourist marks the second time that Jolie has stepped into Tom Cruise’s shoes. Cruise had been eyeing The Tourist and Jolie’s forthcoming Salt as potential starring roles but he dropped out to star in Knight and Day.

Both films were retooled for Jolie – with Salt’s main character changing sex.

Source: Variety

2. Speaking of Angelina Jolie…

Billy Bob Thornton will join Dwayne Johnson in the action-comedy Faster.

According to Variety:

“Johnson plays Driver, an ex-con out to avenge his brother’s murder. Thornton plays Cop, a veteran policeman who trails Driver as he races to settle with those responsible for the murder. Also in the mix is Killer, an egocentric hitman who’s after Driver.”

Does the word generic mean anything to anyone?

Source: Variety

3. Ricky Gervais has finally landed himself an awards show.

The British comedian will host the forthcoming Golden Globes in January – it’s the first time the show has had a host since 1995.

Gervais said:

“It’s an environment where I feel I can get free rein as host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down.”

I’m sure that the paycheck is quite hefty too.

Source: Variety

4. Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller have been snapped on the set of Little Fockers.

They look exactly like DeNiro and Stiller standing on a film set.

Little Fockers opens on June 30, 2010

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

All kinds of goodies took place this last week. Let’s get on with the tidbits of TV!

1. Bruce’s Public Service Announcement: Be aware that the season premiere of season 4.5 (Is that just not the most ridiculous thing ever?) of Battlestar Galactica that is airing this Friday on January 16th will run over by 3 1/2 minutes. That means you need to make the appropriate changes to whatever recording device you may employ, if that is indeed what you are doing. Me, I’m gonna be there live! Despite in-laws crawling all over my place, they’ve been warned. Back off when my show comes on. Go to sleep, go for a walk, go for a drive, or watch it with me, but git out of my way and don’t talk during my show! I take my BSG serious! Source: SciFi Wire

2. Some of the biggest news this last week was the Golden Globes awards. Here’s a list of Television Series wins that came away with some of that award glitter:

Madmen beat out Dexter, House, In Treatment and True Blood for Best Series

Anna Paquin (True Blood) took Best Performance by an Actress - Drama

Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) won Best Performance by an Actor – Drama

30 Rock (NBC) beat out Californication (SHOWTIME), Entourage (HBO), The Office (NBC) and Weeds (SHOWTIME) for Best – Musical Or Comedy

Tina Fey (30 Rock) took away the Best Performance by an Actress – Musical Or Comedy award.

Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) won the complimentary award for Best Performance by an Actor – Musical Or Comedy

John Adams (HBO) won the Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television award.

Laura Linney (John Adams) won it for Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture

Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:
Actress: Laura Dern (Recount on HBO)
Actor: Paul Giamatti (John Adams on HBO)

3. If you’re a Faye Dunaway fan, keep an eye out. Dunaway is making a guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy in February. Source: EW.com

4. Speaking of Grey’s Anatomy: Melissa George who played the rambunctious, self destructive Sadie has left the show. Tuesday was her last day as she is off to “Do something else”. Rumor on the street says it was a mutual decision between her and ABC. Some think the character was too flamboyant. Source: EW.com

5. Stephanie March will be reprising her role of Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot on the popular crime drama show, Law & Order: SVU. Right now, she’s slated for 6 episodes. If her return is a success, will they consider keeping her on? Source: NBC

6. Pushing Daisies star Swoosie Kurtz is slated to make an appearance on NBC’s Hero’s this spring. Her character, Millie, will be on at least one episode. What’s not known is whether Kurtz’s role will become a recurring role. Depends on audience reaction I guess. Source: TV Guide

7. Remember Laura Vandervoort who played Kara on Smallville? I thought I’d follow up (Not stalking, really) on what she’s been up to since her Kara days. She’s had roles in The Jazzman, due out this year; she played Marcie Cutler in Out of Control, due out this year; Frankie in Damage that is due out in 2010 and presently she’s working on her latest project: Into the Blue 2, also due out in 2010. She keeps everyone apprised of her whereabouts on her website, lauravandervoort.net. She has a surprising versatility to her photo portfolio. Sources: IMDB,

8. Survivor castaways have been announced and the new trick this year is they will be split up into 2 teams immediately and 2 folk will be left behind before anyone even gets to know each other. Ouch. The kid who was always picked last for kick ball will probably be left behind again! The motley rice eating, bug crunching bunch ranges in age from 19 to 53. Source: CBS

9. Supernatural and Smallville kick off the 2nd half of their seasons on January 15th.

10. Stargate: Atlantis generated some great numbers for the Sci-Fi Channel, bringing in an estimated 1.15 million adults between the ages of 25 and 54. The highest rating since their season 4 finale. Source: SyFy Portal

11. John Glover (You may remember him as Lionel Luthor on Smallville) is joining the cast of Heroes. He’ll be playing the part of Sylar’s biological father. He’ll show up about 5 episodes into the 2nd half of the season. Source: E Online

12. Everyone is reporting the hottest news this week that Prison Break will be canceled, or more to the point, be allowed to run its course and end gracefully. For whatever reason, they may add an additional hour or two to fully complete the endless story of the chain gang constantly having to escape something. Of course, if you’re a faithful Screen Rant follower, you knew this already since we reported it back in November. Stick with us… we’ll keep you on top of things.
