Two high-profile sci-fi projects have landed new writing talent: Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla franchise revamp, which will be helmed by Gareth Edwards – and Asteroids, an adaptation of the classic Atari arcade game that (despite previous rumors to the contrary) will not be directed by Roland Emmerich.

David S. Goyer‘s earlier draft of the Godzilla screenplay will be getting a rework by a little-known, but increasingly-popular, scriber. A writer whose career is (likewise) on the up-and-up is going to be taking on the Asteroids movie.

David S. Goyer is one of the better-known names in the comic book movie biz, having collaborated with Christopher Nolan on the scripts for all three of his Batman movies, and being the writer for Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel reboot. Now he’s been recruited for another writing job that involves rebooting a longtime popular franchise, Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla revamp.

Gareth Edwards is the man calling the shots on the new Godzilla, which will attempt to kick off a new series of films featuring the Japanese monster in a more successful fashion than Roland Emmerich’s critically-despised 1998 film did.

Deadline is reporting that Goyer will work from an earlier draft of the Godzilla screenplay penned by David Callaham, the co-writer of the 2005 Doom movie and <a ...

Click to continue reading David S.
Due to the recent quake and tsunami, Legendary Pictures has asked Guillermo del Toro to rewrite the script for 'Pacific Rim' so that no destruction takes place in Japan.

Many of Guillermo del Toro’s fans are still coming to terms with the recent collapse of the acclaimed auteur’s planned adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. Although Universal wasn’t quite ready to pull the trigger on an R-rated monster movie with a $100 million price tag, del Toro quickly rebounded with another creature feature he’d been in talks for – Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim.

He certainly had no shortage of projects to choose from, since del Toro’s name gets attached to almost everything these days, but the confirmation that Pacific Rim would be his next film seemed to be a small consolation to fans who’d been primed to see the director’s dream project finally come to fruition. On the surface, Pacific Rim might appear to ...

Click to continue reading ‘Pacific Rim’ Rewrites Imminent After Japan Disaster

Director Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi drama Monsters (read our review) may have been produced with an extremely modest budget, but that didn’t stop the film from garnering plenty of critical praise as well as a substantial cult following – and earning a spot as one of our favorite movies of 2010.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that Vertigo Films, who owns the rights to the budding franchise, is looking for opportunities to expand the Monsters mythology into future sequels or even a TV spin-off. Unfortunately, it sounds as if the studio will be doing it without Gareth Edwards who not only penned and directed the breakout feature – but also worked on many of the film’s visual effects.

Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) is aware of how easily a 'Godzilla' movie can go wrong and insists that his upcoming reboot won't fall victim to those pitfalls.

Over the course of six decades, Godzilla has made numerous appearances in film, television, comic books, novels, and video games. The iconic monster is instantly recognizable in most corners of the world, and yet America’s largest contribution to his mythology is the embarrassing 1998 remake directed by Roland Emmerich.

However, concepts as elemental as Godzilla are capable of surviving the most dubious of adaptations and it was only a matter of time before someone else decided to take a crack at it. Last March, Legendary Pictures stepped up to the plate and announced their plans to re-imagine the creature’s origin story as “a modern day epic”.

Godzilla is one of cinema’s greatest movie monsters. As soon as you think you’ve put him down for good, the big fella always comes roaring back to life to stomp the world once again.

For the last year or so, we’ve been following development on the most recent incarnation of the Godzilla movie franchise from Legendary Pictures. In September, we learned that Legendary Pictures wanted to bring the beast back to his roots and deliver a film that was far different than Sony’s 1998 remake. Now, we’ve learned who Legendary and Warner Bros. have chosen to bring the project to fruition – UK director Gareth Edwards.

According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Edwards was chosen for the director’s chair after his acclaimed independent sci-fi film Monsters wowed both critics and Hollywood ...

Click to continue reading ‘Monsters’ Director Gareth Edwards Will Direct ‘Godzilla’

It was announced this past March that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are developing a reboot of Toho Company’s Godzilla. Fans of the franchise were gratified but wary after Roland Emmerich’s disappointing take on Godzilla in 1998. Things have been moving slowly with the project, though they do still aim for a 2012 release.

Concept art for the film became available at this year’s Comic-Con, providing a bit of nourishment to feed the fan fervor. Though according to the interview below, the “creature head” image for Godzilla that was floating around the interwebs was just an “internet rumor” and has nothing to do with the planned production.

Movie monsters come in all shapes and sizes. While some of the smallest creatures have produced the greatest fear in humanity, there’s no questioning that the giant monsters that attack whole cities and engulf victims like Tic-Tacs are terrifying on a whole other scale (get it?). Movies have seen their fair share of the big fellas, and we’ve narrowed them down to those we think are the scariest of them all.

Certain giant movie monsters just missed the cut, but came to mind while developing our ten favorites. For instance, the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers is a massive and disgusting creature and the Graboids of Tremors are hideous creatures, but ultimately both missed our list.

The 2010 Comic-Con provided a lot of material for moviegoers, and geeks in general, to fawn over – including a first look at the creature design of Godzilla, the iconic nuclear-powered beast who will grace the big screen once again in 2012.

Legendary Pictures set up a booth at the convention that provided a fully immersive experience for attendees – complete with plumes of black smoke and a floor that shook in the wake of an animated Godzilla passing by.
We’ve got the latest movie media roundup featuring an excellent collection of posters and pictures from several upcoming projects.

Today’s roundup includes images from The Last Airbender, Despicable Me, Predators, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Futurama, as well as potential concept artwork from the Godzilla reboot.

First up, we have the new international poster for M. Night Shyamalan’s big-budget, 3D adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon The Last Airbender.

Check out the international poster after the jump:

Like the recent elemental one-sheets, this new poster for The Last Airbender showcases both the excellent texture of the film’s effects and maintains the moody tone, as well as dramatic atmosphere, of previous footage and images we’ve seen so far.

Godzilla is certainly one of the most prolific actors, or actresses (depending on which version we’re talking about) in history with over thirty films, as well as numerous cartoons, named after the giant monster.

Following only a bit of speculation last summer, Legendary Pictures has announced plans for a “modern day epic” based on the Godzilla franchise with a tentative 2012 release date. Legendary will be co-financing and co-producing the project in partnership with Warner Bros. The partnership is nothing new as the pairing has provided moviegoers with several critical successes including: 300, The Dark Knight, and The Hangover.

Legendary secured the rights to the giant lizard/dinosaur from the Japanese based Toho Corp – who have guided the franchise for five decades and will still oversee the film’s release in Japan.

Aliens invade the box office with District 9; get ready to see more Saw; Elvis talks Bubba Nosferatu; St Elmo’s Fire gets remade; Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen join Ron Shelton in Q School, while Maggie Q looks for a Priest; Godzilla may be going on the warpath again; Sony takes a dose of Doctor Parnassus and Wall Street 2 adds another cast member.

Box Office

It looks like originality won out at the box office for a change. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 banked a cool $37 million over the weekend. The Peter Jackson produced Sci-Fi film had a negative cost of just $30 million and with great reviews it looks like this could do well in the long run too.

GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra had an average drop from last weekend’s surprisingly high take.
