While comic book movie titans like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are hogging the spotlight, there are several other high-profile Summer 2012 prequels, sequels, and adaptations vying for the moviegoing public’s attention on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a smaller production like Riddick (a.k.a. Riddick 3) continues to make headlines – thanks to the efforts of its star, Vin Diesel – even though it’s not due out until next year.

Today, we have a combination of new official stills and higher-definition versions of images previously available online, from 2012 titles like Prometheus, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and G.I. ‘G.I. Joe Retaliation’ Trailer: Looks Better Than the First One

Next summer, director Jon Chu (Step Up 2 & 3) will attempt to craft a better G.I. Joe movie than the one put together by director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) back in 2009. To combat fan skepticism (which remains on red alert status at the time of writing this), Chu and CO. have promised that their sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will give the franchise a fresh start, with a better cast, better story and most of all, better action than its predecessor.

With today’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer, we’re getting our first look at whether or not the actual film lives up to all the promises.

Feelings about G.I. Joe: Retaliation have been on the mixed side – especially in the wake of information attained from the film’s casting calls, which indicated the sequel may be adding several new characters (rather than established fan-favorites) to the mix.

Retaliation co-writer Rhett Reese’s recent Joe-related tweet has cast some doubt on the implications of said casting calls. However, there is one new character that we can officially confirm will appear in the film.

Production on director Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe 2 (tentatively titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is about to get underway, with big action stars like Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis having been recruited to give the sequel an edge over its moderately-received predecessor.

Casting calls sent out for the Hasbro flick reveal the names of a few brand new Joes that’ll make their debut in the G.I. Joe followup, along with some more information about the plot.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner previously indicated that G.I. Joe: Retaliation would essentially amount to a semi-franchise reboot that wouldn’t require moviegoers to be familiar with the original film. While J.J. Abrams has (in public) been scuffling his feet about actually committing to the task of directing Star Trek 2, it is understandable. Between his having completed post-production and promotion duties on Super 8 just a couple months ago, and his involvement as producer on upcoming TV shows like Alcatraz and Person of Interest, the man has definitely had a lot on his plate to handle.

The good news for Trekkies and sci-fi lovers alike is that Abrams seems ready to finally accept the job as helmer of Star Trek 2. However, the bad news is that (as we’ve all but known for months now) the film will definitely not be arriving in Summer 2012.

The latest batch of casting news concerns Ruben Fleischer’s star-studded crime pic, Gangster Squad, the Hasbro sequel, G.I. Joe 2, and the next installment in the Jason Bourne franchise, The Bourne Legacy.

Gangster Squad definitely has the makings of a great period-piece /mobster drama along the lines of The Untouchables, with its intriguing real-life subject matter and a stellar cast that includes Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi (though, sadly, Bryan Cranston is reportedly no longer onboard).

‘Wonder Woman’ Actress Adrianne Palicki Joins ‘G.I. Joe 2′

Paramount is pressing ahead full-steam with G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes, as to ensure the sequel makes its release date in Summer 2012 – since it’s already down one tent-pole pic for the season, with Star Trek 2 now being all but “officially” delayed. Hence why the casting process for Hasbro’s new film has been moving faster – with stars like RZA and D.J. Cotrona having joined the project over the past week.

Now Friday Night Lights actress Adrianne Palicki is the latest addition to the cast of the new G.I. Joe adventure – which she’ll be available to star in, since the pilot for her would-be Wonder Woman TV show reboot was not picked up by NBC.

RZA and D.J. Cotrona May Be Recruited For ‘G.I. Joe’ Sequel

Director Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe sequel (which is reportedly titled G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes) is gearing up to begin production in just over a months’ time, with largely a new cast to boot.

The latest additions to the aforementioned acting team look to be none other than Wu-Tang Clan co-founder RZA as the Blind Master and actor D.J. Cotrona (Windfall, Detroit 1-8-7) as the academically-inclined warrant officer, code-named “Flint.”

Heat Vision says both actors are in negotiations to join Chu’s follow-up to the 2009 movie, which will also feature new additions like Elodie Yung (District 13: Ultimatum) as the martial artist Jinx and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the bulky soldier (and excellent chef) Roadblock.

While G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra earned itself a sequel which already has an official release date, it won’t be bringing back Stephen Sommers to direct or most of its supporting cast. Even though the sequel is titled G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes, it won’t be bringing back Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the title character either.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra may only have been a moderate commercial success for Paramount, but it managed to rake in enough cash to warrant interest in a sequel – albeit with a lower budget and a streamlined cast.

For some, G.I. Joe was mindless guilty pleasure fun that had the good sense not to take itself too seriously. For others, it was an abomination of the G.I. Joe brand that took far too many liberties with the property. That sort of mixed reaction should make the development of G.I. Joe 2 fairly interesting to watch, since the studio now has to determine which group it should try and cater to.

Paramount Pictures seemed to spend a good chunk of last year scuffling its feet, with regards to getting a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra underway.

Now some solid progress on G.I. Joe 2 has been made, with Jon Chu being hired on to direct, early word about which cast members are returning (leaked by Rachel Nichols), and an announcement from Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner that only further confirms that the second installment in the G.I. Joe franchise is being fashioned as a semi-reboot.

G.I. Joe 2 Cast Gets Trimmed

/Film has spotted an interesting development over the Twitter account of actress Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in G.I. Joe. Nichols dropped a bomb when she revealed that Paramount isn’t bringing back much of the principal cast of G.I. Joe 1 for G.I. Joe 2, the sequel which is being directed by Jon Chu and written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

So who is coming back for the next G.I. Joe? And what does this development mean about how the sequel is being approached? We’ll discuss.

Hasbro CEO Gives ‘G.I. Joe 2′ Updates

It might seem odd to get a movie update from the head of a major toy company, but it actually makes a ton of sense when the movie in question is G.I. Joe 2. In a recent interview, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner talked about progress on the film and gave some updates on the script.

Speaking with MTV, Goldner confirmed recent reports that multiple directors are competing to direct G.I. Joe 2, saying, “we have a really good script and we’re right now talking to a number of directors.” Goldner then went into greater detail on the script, which was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, Deadpool).

In the summer of 2009, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment drudged through our collective 1980s nostalgia treasure box and pieced together, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, an over-the-top adrenaline-fueled action film with Stephen Sommers at the helm.

Today, we’re getting word of the three potentials names that could replace Sommers’ on the director’s chair for the upcoming G.I. Joe sequel.

Latino Review reports that Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax and The Orphan), F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen and The Negotiator), and John Chu (Step Up 3-D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) are all in the running to pilot the H.A.V.O.C., I mean sequel.

While G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra may have been a bit of a big budget mess of a film, it did bring to fans a whole lot of what G.I. Joe is all about: crazy action, cool characters and over-the-top vehicles. Despite some questionable special effects, Rise of Cobra offered a fun experience, bringing to the screen what many of us imagined in our heads as children while toying with action figures on the floor.

G.I. Joe 2 is expected to bring back most of the iconic franchise characters of the first film for another explosive adventure, and now we can include one character who many thought may have met his end: Storm Shadow.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra may not have won any battles with audiences or critics when it was released in the summer of 2009, but that didn’t stop it from raking in an impressive worldwide box office gross of over $300 million. As far as Hollywood is concerned – that’s a victory.

When you consider the additional revenue garnered from home video sales and the endless array of merchandising tie-ins, it’s easy to see why Paramount promptly pushed G.I. Joe 2 into development. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, Deadpool) were brought on board last year to write the screenplay and in August it was revealed that Stephen Sommers would return to the director’s chair.

Despite generally negative critical response to last year’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and questionable special effects, director Stephen Sommers brought a relatively fun summer film to audiences around the world. Produced with the hefty budget of $175 million, the film brought in around $300 million worldwide but excelled even further with merchandise sales for Hasbro and on home video.

We’ve known that G.I. Joe 2 would be made for quite some time and in May producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that they hoped to start filming next Spring for a Summer release in 2012. What was still uncertain was whether or not director Stephen Sommers would be back to direct the sequel.
