‘G.I. Joe 2′ Pushed Back to March 2013 for 3D Conversion

Here’s an unexpected twist: Paramount is delaying the release date for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, just over a month before the sequel was originally due to hit theaters around the U.S. Retaliation has now been pushed back an entire nine months to a March 29th, 2013 date – where it will face off against The Host during its opening weekend.

The reason for said abrupt delay? Paramount wants to convert the film to 3D, in order to improve its box office prospects overseas.

Deadline quotes an unnamed Paramount head as saying (about Retaliation):

“We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of ‘Titanic’‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.”

Marvel’s The Avengers has officially kicked the summer 2012 movie season off to a record-breaking start, and other studios are no doubt chomping at the bit to get into the game with their own tentpole offerings.

Today we’ve rounded up new promotional images from The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as new TV advertisements for Pixar’s princess fairy tale Brave and the sci-fi threequel Men in Black III. Add to that a hilarious clip featuring the love life of David Hasselhoff as depicted in Piranha 3DD, a vertigo-inducing new clip from Snow White and the Huntsman, and a Japanese trailer and final poster for the sequel/reboot G.I. Joe Retaliation.

Today’s batch of Summer Movie Season 2012 paraphernalia includes images and posters from a somewhat belated threequel (Men in Black III), a retooling of a centuries-old tale (Snow White and the Huntsman), a revamping of a cash-cow comic book movie franchise (The Amazing Spider-Man), Schwarzenegger, Willis and Stallone shooting things up in The Expendables 2 - and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which bucks the sequel/reboot trend by being equal parts both.

Check out the full gallery for another look at the new alien hardware in the third (or, as the posters put it, cubed) Men in Black film, along with the namesakes for every one of the aforementioned titles – including a pic that showcases three iconic names in 1980s action entertainment, united together (and not simply trash-talking one another).

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ International Trailers: More Gadgets, Story & Action

The early award for “most improved franchise” of the summer blockbuster season goes to G.I. Joe: Retaliation, a sequel/reboot of the G.I. Joe film franchise, which suffered something of blow with the disappointing first installment, The Rise of Cobra. Things only look better in the two new Retaliation international trailers we have for you today.

G.I. Joe 2 - which has traded Mummy director Stephen Sommers for… er, Step Up 2 director Jon M. Chu – has already gotten right what the first film got wrong, including a more badass Joe team (headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bruce Willis and Ray Park returning as Snake Eyes), a darker storyline (G.I. Joe facing extinction), grittier action, and even improved costumes for iconic characters like Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes.

New ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer: More Action & Cheesy One-Liners

Despite the influx of G.I. Joe: Retaliation posters and images over the past few weeks, fans have grown increasingly (and audibly) restless about the wait for a new trailer. Just in the nick of time, another theatrical promo has been released for the second Joe live-action movie (see above), offering a succinct outline of the story featured in the (semi-)rebooting sequel, an extended look at the film’s renovated cast in motion – and a better idea of what director Jon M. Chu meant when he said that Retaliation does not “discount” the events in Rise of Cobra.

Here’s the million dollar question, though: will seeing this additional footage from Retaliation ultimately get the fanbase more excited – or diminish anticipation for the film?

New ‘G.I. Joe 2′ Posters; Jon Chu Describes His Approach to the Sequel

No less than eight G.I. Joe: Retaliation character posters were released last week, featuring the sequel’s various new, returning and improved heroic/villainous players alike. An additional pair of character one-sheets have since made their way online – in the form(s) of an alternate pic with Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye (now, with desert camouflage attire) and Detroit 1-8-7‘s D.J. Cotrona as Flint – along with a Korean poster for the film.

Despite getting off to a bumpy start with 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the live-action Joe franchise looks to take a big step in the right direction with this summer’s installment, G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Director Jon Chu’s decision to include more fan-favorite Joe characters – and abandon Rise of Cobra helmer Stephen Sommers’ cheesy approach to the series, in favor of a down n’ dirty, hard-hitting angle – has a lot to do with that.

We’re just a few weeks away from the official start of the 2012 Summer Movie Season, which means tons of franchise titles, reboots, and sequels will soon be flooding theaters – including, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Expendables 2, and Piranha 3DD. Once things cool down at your local multiplex, more artsy fare (like Neil Jordan’s Byzantium) will be taking the place of those blockbuster releases.

New ‘Men in Black 3′ & ‘G.I. Joe 2′ Images: Aliens & Ninjas

Today we have new images from two high-profile blockbuster sequels coming in 2012: the third chapter in the Men in Black movie franchise (aptly titled Men in Black III), as well as the second chapter (which is also something of a fresh start) for the G.I. Joe movie franchise, G.I. Joe Retaliation.

So far 2012 is shaping up to be a fairly good year for movies – and the biggest lineup of blockbusters is still on the way. Today we’ve rounded up some new movie clips and commercials from around the globe to share with you.

We have TV ads that give us a look at Marvel’s lineup of superheroes for The Avengers, as well as the comic book-style action we’ll be seeing in the (hopefully improved) sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Finally, we have the first clip of Peter Berg’s Battleship, an alien-invasion action flick (very loosely) based on the Hasbro board game.

Few things give film geeks (us included) more pleasure than being able to pore over still frames from upcoming blockbusters – and, in the process, (over)analyze everything from the costumes on display to the angle the photos were shot at.

It’s for that reason that, yet again, we’ve gathered together new images from several movies on the horizon, including this summer’s action sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Ridley Scott’s Alien-verse flick Prometheus – and hi-res, non-watermarked, versions of previously-unveiled pics from the first Hobbit movie (courtesy of director Peter Jackson).

1. G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens on 29th June and the marketing for the film is beginning to kick into high gear. A new still of Bruce Willis’ Joe Colton has been released and the Die Hard star appears like he’s never appeared before– bald and with a gun.

Does anybody else remember when Willis said “I got sick of running down the street with a gun in my hand”?

New ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Images: New Improved Snake Eyes Costume [UPDATED]

There’s no doubt that G.I. Joe‘s resident ninja Snake Eyes is badass. In fact, Snake Eyes was (in this writer’s opinion) one of the only saving graces of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and somehow director Stephen Sommers managed to even mess that up, by giving Snake Eyes a mask with a plastic mouth on the front of it…for some reason.

It’s true that Snake Eyes got the short end of the stick in the first film – but it’s just as true that Jon M. Chu, director of the upcoming sequel film G.I. Joe: Retaliation has learned from the mistakes of predecessor on several fashion fronts. We’ve already seen Chu’s much improved version of Cobra Commander – and today we’re getting a closer look at the improved Snake Eyes.

‘Wrath of the Titans’, ‘G.I. Joe 2′, & ‘Brave’ TV Spot Roundup

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ TV Spot: Roadblock Explains The Tao of Joe

One of the major selling points for this summer’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation is how director Jon Chu has found a way to organically “clean house” and recruit plenty of fresh blood for the second installment in the live-action Joe franchise. That includes Dwayne “(Still) The Rock” Johnson taking over leading man duties by sliding into the role of (as the actor puts it) the “BAMF” that is Roadblock.

Johnson, as Roadblock, recited “the proverb of Jay-Z” amidst footage of his Joe team duking it out with Cobra Commander’s forces in the Retaliation Super Bowl TV trailer. Today, we have another television spot for the sequel, which likewise features Roadblock waxing philosophical in between bouts of kicking butt and taking names.

When movie fans first heard word that Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon Chu would be heading-up G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to Stephen Sommers’ 2009 live-action G.I. Joe adaptation, the collective reaction online was pretty snarky – with even the most generous film-lovers being somewhat skeptical.

Then came word that Chu and the production team would be dramatically slashing the star-studded cast to streamline the sequel – with high profile actors and actresses, such as Rachel Nichols, Marlon Wayans, and Dennis Quaid, all finding themselves excised from the franchise (at least for now). The trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation surprised a lot of people with its more grounded and gritty take on the G.I. Joe universe. Director Jon M. Chu is also stacking the cast with some celebrated action stars like Bruce Willis and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, in order to help lure the average moviegoer back toward this franchise – which admittedly had something of a rocky start.

Today we have a new French trailer for G.I. Joe 2. It’s pretty much an echo of the U.S. trailer, except with a few more shots of vehicles, heroes and villains doing battle, and a nice little shoutout to Cobra Commander’s revamped costume.
