With X-Men Origins: Wolverine having a huge (Hugh-ge?) opening this weekend it looks like Hugh Jackman just might be a legitimate movie star after all. He seems intent on proving this by planning to produce (through his company, Seed Productions) and starring in Ghostopolis.

The supernatural film is currently set up at Disney and is based on a graphic novel by Doug TenNapel.

It sort of sounds a bit like Ghostbusters meets Van Helsing – which might not be that good an idea. Having said that, the synopsis of the film from The Hollywood Reporter does sound pretty neat:

“The story centers on a man who works for the government’s Supernatural Immigration Task Force. His job is to send ghosts who have escaped into our world back to Ghostopolis. When a living boy accidentally is sent to the other side, the agent must team with a female ghost (and former flame) to bring him back.”

As long as CGI is kept to a minimum and the script is up to scratch, this should be an enjoyable big budget piece of entertainment. It’ll be interesting to see if audiences can accept Jackman outside the role of Wolverine. In the past ten years he’s been in a lot of films (and done a lot of theater) but he’s not really had a solo hit outside of the X-Men brand name. He attempted to branch out in 2004 with Van Helsing and the film was supposed to launch a franchise and a spin-off television series, but following a big opening the box office trailed off and the critics were far from supportive of the film.

That’s not to say that there isn’t audience good will. Everyone seems to like Jackman – women love him, men admire him and everyone in-between has a combination of the above.

With no director or writer attached, Ghostopolis is quite a while a way yet, but I can only imagine any film in development with Jackman’s name is going to be fast tracked following the $87 million opening weekend of Wolverine.

More on Ghostopolis when we get it.
