Bill Murray Shreds ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Script (Literally)

Ghostbusters fans around the world can now rejoice, as Bill Murray has finally read the Ghostbusters 3 script. But before any celebrating, you should probably know that he didn’t really like the script… at all.

In fact, the National Enquirer is reporting that Murray disliked the script so much that he decided to shred the script and send it back to his fellow paranormal exterminators, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, with a note attached: “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!”

Sigourney Weaver Offers ‘Avatar 2′ and ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Update

Classic fan-favorite (and multiple Oscar-nominated) starlet Sigourney Weaver will return to theaters this month in the action flick, Abduction, and will co-headline the thriller Red Lights next year. However, most everyone really wants to know about two of the actress’ (theoretical) upcoming franchise sequels: Avatar 2 and the perennially-delayed Ghostbusters 3.

James Cameron is expected to shoot Avatar 2 and 3 back-to-back, beginning in 2012; meanwhile, Dan Aykroyd has been talking of late about Ghostbusters 3 starting production next spring, with or without Bill Murray. But will Weaver be involved with either project?

At this point it’s getting kind of tiring to even write about Ghostbusters 3 - what with all the back-and-forth rumors and talk from the former cast members (Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray in particular) and director Ivan Reitman. No matter what has been said about the status of the film, who will or will not be coming back, and what the plot will be, it’s all summated to one glaring truth: lot of talk, very little action.

But now, according (yet again) to Dan Aykroyd, the Ghostbusters threequel is about to stop spinning its wheels in development limbo and start moving full-speed ahead – perhaps without Bill Murray.

It appears that the resident Ghostbusters 3 hold-out, Bill Murray, has added another man to his corner of unassured confidence in a possible threequel for the hit franchise, as Ghostbusters 2 alum Kurt Fuller says that he doesn’t believe Ghostbusters 3 should be made.

We spoke with Ghostbusters 2’s proverbial “pecker” while at Comic-Con about his role of Woody the coroner on the USA hit series Psych, and it appears that Fuller has still not completely taken Peter Venkman’s advice from the Ghostbusters sequel: “Aren’t you supposed to lie to me and kiss my butt?” though some “but kissing” does naturally occur.

This weekend, while in the UK to promote No Strings Attached, Ivan Reitman provided Ghostbusters fans with a glimmer of hope by suggesting that Bill Murray has, in fact, read the script for Ghostbusters 3. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

While appearing on The Howard Stern Show today to promote the DVD release of Get Low, Bill Murray set all of the Ghostbusters 3 rumors to rest and explained to all those listening exactly where he stands on the highly-anticipated return of everyone’s favorite paranormal exterminators.

‘Ghostbusters 3′ Writer & Producer Discuss the Bill Murray Factor

As each month passes, the hopeful spring start date for Ghostbusters 3 becomes increasingly unlikely.

While Sony Pictures, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman have already signed-off on the much revised Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky screenplay, there still remains one final hurdle to overcome… the Bill Murray factor.Last week, Lee Eisenberg and Ghostbusters 3 producer Joe Medjuck separately discussed the stalled production of the highly-anticipated return of everyone’s favorite parapsychologists. The success rate of belated movie sequels really does not bode well for the quality of the perennially delayed Ghostbusters 3. The second sequel in the popular horror-comedy series is still looking to become a reality soon, as franchise writer/star Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that casting for the pic is indeed underway.

Now Ghosbusters 1 & 2 helmer Ivan Reitman has also spoken out about Ghostbusters 3 and dismissed much of the online rumor mongering about behind-the-scenes drama involving Bill Murray, as well as some of the potential plot points in the threequel (sort of…).

In this writer’s opinion, Ghostbusters 3 is another one of those long-in-development sequels that will probably be, at best, extremely disappointing. Remember Live Free and Die Hard? Remember Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Has there ever been an instance of a twenty-year-old sequel that was as good or better than the original?

‘Ghostbusters 3′ Casting Call; Is Anna Faris Onboard?

Ghostbusters 3 has shown rejuvenated signs of life over the past few months, and now the project – which has been in some form of development for around two decades now – may actually be moving forward.

Sony Pictures has reportedly sent out a casting call to Los Angeles and Chicago actors for the third Ghostbusters, which apparently could begin production by May 2011.

New information concerning the progress of the perennially delayed, we’re-tired-of-making-jokes-about-it sequel, Ghostbusters 3, has emerged – and this time, it comes from someone other than Dan Aykroyd .

Production Weekly has tweeted that Sony Pictures is planning to put the third Ghostbusters flick into production by May 2011, though we recommend you take this claim with a HUGE dose of salt since we’ve heard rumors of this ilk in connection to the supernatural comedy threequel for years now.

In recent years Bill Murray’s attraction to joining Ghostbusters 3 has been like the lyrics to a Katy Perry song:

We’re not sure how seriously anyone should take Dan Aykroyd’s talk about Ghostbusters 3 these days. The sequel has been in development for over twenty years now and Aykroyd’s costar, Bill Murray, has been very clear about his, to put it mildly, lack of enthusiasm for the project.

Vanity Fair caught up with Aykroyd recently and the comical actor/screenwriter revealed that he is currently at work revising the Ghostbusters 3 script, which was penned by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.

Ghostbusters 3 seems like a no-brainer in some ways. The previous two films were incredibly successful and in a celluloid landscape crowded with sequels, remakes, and reboots it’s obvious that Hollywood loves capitalizing on our nostalgia. Yet, development hell has proved a more formidable opponent for Egon, Ray, Peter, and Winston than any of their on-screen adversaries.

Bill Murray has never been shy about his thoughts on Ghostbusters 3. Originally he wanted no part of it and then famously joked that he’d only do it if Venkman were a ghost. Murray wasn’t being serious, but the writers unfortunately went ahead and implemented that idea into their script anyways.

Coming Soon caught up with Bill Murray at a press day for his latest indie flick Get Low and managed to get some information concerning the long-gestating Ghostbusters 3 sequel from the man who’s long been rumored to be the main culprit responsible for holding up development on the project.

Murray – along with Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and director Ivan Reitman – has to sign-off on any potential Ghostbusters 3 scripts before production can get underway. So far it seems that Murray is the one member of the original Ghostbusters team whose approval for the sequel has not yet been attained by Columbia Pictures – something that Aykroyd in particular is reportedly a bit peeved about.

To be fair, Bill Murray has never pretended to be much of anything but skeptical about the idea of rumored-sequel-that-will-not-die Ghostbusters 3 since the idea popped up over 20 years ago. Even in a recent interview with Dave Letterman, Murray seemed to dismiss any passion left in him for the franchise as pitiable nostalgia than anything else.

Yet, as dedicated movie fans everywhere know all too well, Ghostbusters 3 is a project that just can’t make up its mind whether to live or die. That’s right boys and ghouls (stop rolling your eyes, you know I had to say it), in a interview with MTV last night, Ivan Reitman was asked point-blank if he was returning to helm the third installment of Ghostbusters. His answer was an unequivocal “Yes.” This is fantastic news for fans of the franchise. Ghostbusters is one of the classic comedy films of the 80’s, and even though Ghostbusters 2 wasn’t quite up to the same standard, it did have its high points *cough Sigourney Weaver in her bra cough*
