Expectations have never been high, when it concerns Crank helmers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s ability to create an especially captivating take on the Ghost Rider mythology in this month’s sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Early word is that the film doesn’t exactly offer much, as far as richly-realized character and plot development goes – but that it does deliver the goods where bombastic action set pieces and nonstop thrills are concerned.

Heck, going by the previous Spirit of Vengeance TV spots and featurettes released – along with the handful of new clips we have for you to watch today – it’s easy to forget that this followup DOES actually have a plot; one that could set the stage for a welcome change-up in casting for future Ghost Rider installments, no less.

Sony is in the midst of its marketing blitz for the comic book sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance – with multiple TV spots and featurettes having been released, in the hope of heightening anticipation for Nicolas Cage’s second round as the super-powered motorcyclist clad in (often, melted) black leather, Johnny Blaze.

“Bigger, badder, and more badass” is the mantra for two action-packed, post-converted 3D blockbuster sequels due to hit theaters in the first quarter of 2012 – namely, the superhero comic book movie, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and the mythological fantasy adventure, Wrath of the Titans. ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ Featurette: Crazy Filmmaking Stunts

Despite early reviews indicating that directing duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor haven’t made the most inspired of comic book movies with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, no one denies the pair’s sheer gusto when it comes to using guerrilla filmmaking tactics, and their willingness to do severe bodily harm to themselves (and their crew), all in the name of creating some breathtakingly in-your-face camera angles and shots.

Footage of the pair’s “extreme” approach to the art of cinema was shown off last year, at the 2011 New York Comic-Con. Today, we have a featurette that includes much of that behind-the-scenes material, with Neveldine and Taylor hanging on wires, rollerblading while hanging onto motorcycles moving at full speed, and literally putting themselves in the line of fire as they shoot the Ghost Rider sequel.

One glance at the Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance trailer will tell you that this sequel/reboot to the (inexplicably) popular 2007 comic book adaptation isn’t going to be the most thought-provoking flick ever made. With the 2012 Movie season officially underway, studios are rolling out the promotional campaigns for the big films that will be keeping us warm throughout the frigid winter season. Today’s promos share the distinction of being new entries in action movie franchises centered around supernatural anti-heroes clad in black leather; moreover, both Underworld Awakening and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance share the further distinction of being gimmick-heavy 3D flicks that are being realized by (non-related) two-man directing teams.

‘Ghost Rider 2′ Trailer: Explosive Action & Supernatural Mayhem

A collection of movie bloggers and cinephiles have gotten the first look at the Marvel Knight comic book sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance – and, judging by their responses, the preliminary consensus is not good.

Today, we have the full-length Spirit of Vengeance trailer available for viewing – and while it seems to confirm one of the recurring criticisms so far (namely, that the film’s story is kind of boring and predictable) there’s plenty of high-octane action, explosions, and sick CGI supernatural effects to at least make this theatrical promo an entertaining watch.

Sony’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance has been earning some decent buzz of late, thanks to a fairly well-received official teaser trailer, a good showing at the 2011 New York Comic-Con, and a circulating collection of unofficial one-sheets that stylishly recreate some of the more memorable imagery on display in the film’s initial theatrical promo (ex. Johnny Blaze spewing a flaming wave of bullets).

‘Ghost Rider 2′ Posters: Screaming Skulls Spit Bullets & Catch Fire

Nicolas Cage may be reprising his role as Johnny Blaze in the upcoming Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, but otherwise the Marvel comic book superhero is getting a complete makeover in the sequel.

Early footage shown at the 2011 New York Comic-Con and in the Spirit of Vengeance trailer painted the flick as being a far cry from director Mark Steven Johnson’s generally-disliked 2007 Ghost Rider movie. The sequel not only looks to feature some hyper-stylized cinematography and action sequences (courtesy of Crank directing duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor); it also appears to have fully embraced the gritty and supernatural horror roots of the eponymous character.

Sony Panel NYCC ’11: ‘Ghost Rider 2′, ‘Underworld 4′ & ‘Total Recall’

Sony made a big splash at New York Comic-Con 2011, bringing presentations and footage for their upcoming slate of blockbuster movies. The biggest films fans are expecting to see at NYCC are Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Amazing Spider-Man and the Total Recall remake, so the only question is: will Sony fulfill their wishes or leave them feeling disappointed?

Most everyone seems to agree that 2007′s Ghost Rider was an underwhelming addition to the comic book movie genre. While next year’s sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, has been touted as something completely different (and, by association, better) than the original, there hasn’t been a whole lot announced about the project that inspires confidence.

However, the footage previewed at the 2011 Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Comic-Con Panel went over well with those in the audience – and now a trailer has been released, offering everyone else an early look at Johnny Blaze’s new (cinematic) ride.

New ‘Hunger Games’ & ‘Ghost Rider 2′ Official Images

Sony’s superhero sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Lionsgate’s adaptation of The Hunger Games both had a presence at Comic-Con 2011 – though, admittedly, the former made a much bigger impression than the latter.

Before the post-Comic-Con glow fades, both studios are putting out new promotional materials for their respective films, which will both reach theaters in the first quarter of 2012.

Today’s promos for these respective movies come in the form of some new official images. Empire has put out images from Ghost Rider 2 that will be featured in an upcoming issue of the magazine, while EW has the latest pics from The Hunger Games.

Idris Elba Really Wants To Star In ‘Luke Cage’

Comic book movie regular and now Marvel frequent employee, Idris Elba, let the world know a year ago that he was interested in playing other Marvel characters, namely Blade and Luke Cage. After a scene-stealing performance as Heimdall in Thor earlier this summer and presenting footage for his role in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Elba reiterates that he wants the studio to take full advantage of their multi-picture deal with the Brit actor.

During the Sony Pictures Comic-Con 2011 presentation where four upcoming major features were showcased, Idris Elba participated in the panel for the Ghost Rider sequel and fielded a fan question about Marvel roles he’d be willing to tackle and responded by re-affirming his interest in Luke Cage.

The 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International is just about here, which means that we (and a few of you readers) need to start plotting our itineraries and map routes that will help navigate the mad halls of the San Diego Convention Center in time to make all of those highly-anticipated panels.

Comic Book movie fans hoping for a spectacular Hall H lineup at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International might want to start rethinking their game plans right about now.

This year, Hall H – the infamous “main event” room for Comic-Con’s biggest and most anticipated panels – will NOT be hosting some of the biggest comic book movies currently in the works, including Marvel’s The Avengers.

Our good friend John Campea over at AMC was at the red carpet premiere of the new movie Bradley Cooper / Robert De Niro flick Limitless awhile back (read our official review of the film HERE), and had a chance to interview some of the film’s stars, including actor Johnny Whitworth (3:10 to Yuma).
