Unless you were a manga/anime fan in the 1990s, you might not be up on all the geeky details of Ghost In The Shell. Allow me to recap: It started with Shirow Masamune’s classic manga comic, first published in 1989. In 1995, Ghost In The Shell was made into a groundbreaking anime film that became a cult smash here in the states. Animated sequels and miniseries have followed throughout the years.

About two years ago we first got word that a live-action Ghost In The Shell movie was in the pipeline over at Dreamworks, and back in October we were updated with the news that Shutter Island scribe Laeta Kalogridis will be writing the script (she replaces Street Kings writer Jamie Moss).

Dreamworks’ adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga/anime classic Ghost In The Shell has snagged Laeta Kalogridis to adapt Shirow’s futuristic vision into a live-action 3D blockbuster. Kalogridis has penned such past gems as Oliver Stone’s Alexander and the American alt-history epic, Pathfinder, but is poised to be a breakout name for HER work adapting author Dennis Lehane’s novel Shutter Island into a Martin Scorsese film, which will be hitting theaters early next year.

So when he showed a genuine interest in the Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell, his company Dreamworks SKG bought up the rights before Universal and Sony (who were also vying for the property) could do anything about it.

And now comes word that Ghost is intended to be made into a 3-D live-action film(!) Spielberg’s interest in making this movie is interesting considering how “anti-digital” he’s been regarding moviemaking, not even wanting the upcoming Indiana Jones movie released digitally.

Although it’s probably a few years down the line, it will interesting to see its development unfold.
