Cheadle & Pinto Joining ‘Rise of the Apes?’

Just a few weeks ago, 20th Century Fox cast James Franco as the lead in their upcoming prequel Rise of the Apes and the studio is now looking to bring two other significant names onboard – namely acclaimed performers Don Cheadle and Freida Pinto.

A prequel to the original 1968 Planet of the Apes film, Rise of the Apes revolves around a modern-day scientist (Franco) who conducts genetic experiments on a chimp he dubs Caesar, in the hopes of developing a cure for Alzheimers. Caesar begins to develop human-like intelligence and leads a rebellion against his captors (which happened before in the 1972 sequel Conquest of the Planet of the Apes) that eventually results in a world dominated by apes.

‘Rise of the Apes’ Gets Release Date, Director & CGI Chimps

The development of the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes, has been moving forward for quite some time now. While most of what we’ve heard has been innuendo and rumor, it now looks that the film is going to be a reality – as it now has a release date and a confirmed director.

Also, unlike every other Planet of the Apes film (including the Tim Burton remake) the film will use CGI to create the apes in the film.

Fox has announced that Rise of the Apes opens next year on June 24th, and that Rupert Wyatt will be calling the shots on this new installment of the long-running science fiction franchise. Wyatt’s name has been mentioned in conjunction with the project for awhile, but this is the first official confirmation from the studio that he’s helming ...

Special Effects Guru Talks Planet of the Apes Prequel

Regular Screen Rant readers will know that 20th Century Fox has been slowly and ever so quietly developing a Planet of the Apes prequel, which is tentatively titled Caesar: Rise of the Apes . Well, it looks the special effects maestro Aaron Sims (shouldn’t that be simian?) is now attached to the project.

Sims spoke to MTV about the Planet of the Apes prequel at the Clash of the Titans premiere, and when he was quizzed about the potential primate project, he said:

“They’re just starting. There was another director. It’s in the process right now.”

When asked to confirm if there was a director Sims said:

“No–. We’re just starting on that project, it’s just coming around.”

Planet of The Apes Reboot Is Still Alive

It would appear that 20th Century Fox’s Planet of The Apes reboot, code-named Caesar, isn’t dead – it has just been evolving.

New York Magazine is reporting that even though writer/director Scott Frank (Minority Report) is off the project, it is far from scrapped. In fact, the publication reports that the film is now moving ahead faster than ever through the development process.

New York Magazine reports that Fox has now hired Street Kings writer Jamie Moss to rework Frank’s script, and that the original writers, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have also been brought back onto the project to rework the dialogue.

The site gives the following synopsis of the plot:

Planet Of The Apes Movie Dead

Way back in 2008 we ran a story telling you that 20th Century Fox were interested in making a Planet of The Apes reboot called Genesis: Apes, which was later renamed Caesar.

The project was a floor-up reboot of the Apes franchise which followed an intelligent ape named Caesar who would take the first tentative steps in helping apes rule the planet.

The film sounded like a totally radical take on one of Fox’s oldest franchises, and I was very skeptical that the film would ever make it to the big-screen.

Well it turns out that I was right- because the film is dead!

The original script was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, with Minority Report writer Scott Frank later brought on to rewrite and possibly direct the film for the studio.

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. This weekend the news wrap up features:

What hit the top of the box office; Oldboy gets a scriptwriter; Genesis: Apes is real; there will be a New Moon in March and Hugh Jackman discusses the end of Wolverine.

Box Office

The box office was dominated by Four Christmases over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon film should bank about $46 million over the five day weekend. Ho Ho Ho!

Last week’s number one film – Twilight dropped one place this week, but should manage another $40 million over the five days.

Animated Disney effort Bolt should bark up another $35 million over the weekend, while Quantum of Solace should manage another $30 million over the five days.

Baz Lurhmann’s 3 hour epic Australia underperformed with a five day weekend take of just $20 million. The Hugh Jackman – Nicole Kidman film cost $140 million to produce, ...
