We discuss visual effects a lot here on Screen Rant – what looks good, what looks bad, etc. – and so, we thought it only fitting to let our readers know about those films that were recognized at the 2012 Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. The annual event recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.

With 2011 movies like Transformers 3, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Captain America, Hugo, and animated fare like Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss In Boots and Rango all sporting some impressive visual splendor, the big winners of the night were somewhat of a surprise – while others weren’t that surprising at all.

1001 Ridiculous (but Possible) Upcoming Video Game Movies

Mr. Einstein could have very well been talking about Hollywood and all of the video game movies turds it has squeezed out in the past 27 years. Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

Regardless of which year we start from, there have been dozens of movies made from video games and, although some have come close (Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider), NONE have actually been good. There have been some financially successful video game films but a large box office draw ...

‘Gears of Wars’ Movie Gets Budget Cut, Loses Director?

I think it goes without saying that the track record of video game movies doesn’t exactly bode well for the upcoming video game movies currently in development. Gears of War is no exception – even if it’s one of the most critically acclaimed games of the last few years (ever?).

Now we’re hearing word that there are some major changes being made to the Gears of Wars movie, namely regarding who is directing it, what the story is, and what the budget is.

With regards to the latter, LA Times reports that New Line has scaled the project back, dropping the budget from what was to be well over $100 million to a considerably lower amount (no number is actually confirmed). The plan now is to make a more straightforward ...

Story of Gears of War Movie Not Following Games?

We’ve not heard too much about the anticipated live-action adaptation of the Gears of War video game franchise, but way back in February Screen Rant reported that Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) would be directing the Gears of War feature film and co-writing the screenplay alongside Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious).

Unfortunately, Wiseman also said he knows little about video games himself – A red flag considering all video game movies tend to fall short in quality because movie studios cannot/do not replicate and/or recognize the important parts of a video game, its story and the experience it generates.

Much more recently, in October we found out that Billy Ray, who wrote State of Play and Breach, is writing the Gears of War script ...

Billy Ray Signs On For Gears of War

On Thursday, Variety shared the news that screenwriter Billy Ray (State of Play) was set to take on the real life story of Captain Richard Phillips, the man who was held captive by Somali pirates for five days earlier this year. As interesting as it would be to see Captain Phillips’ dramatic escape brought to the big screen, there was a line at the bottom of the Variety article that was far more interesting: “He [Ray] is currently writing “Gears of War” for New Line.”

Wait? Gears of War? Last time we heard, that movie was being written by the team of Len Wiseman (Underworld) and Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast and Furious), with Wiseman as director. What happened? Brendon Connelly over at /Film speculates that Wiseman turned to Billy Ray ...

What’s Happening With The Gears Of War Movie?

This is not exactly breaking news, but due to some reader feedback, we thought we’d touch on the Gears of War movie project and give some information on the latest updates.

At the red carpet premiere of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, the good people over at Bloody Disgusting got a chance discuss the Gears of War project with Underworld creator and producer Len Wiseman. Wiseman revealed that in addition to writing the screenplay with fellow writer Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious), he will also be occupying the director’s seat.

The Gears of War titles hold a special place in my heart and this all sounds promising… A live-action adaptation of one of the greatest video games ever made to date could be awesome – especially one that’s unique in style and story as ...

Gears Of War Still Turning

This is just a quick update for you video game fans out there: Legendary Pictures is reportedly in negotiations to acquire Epic Games, the same video game company that released the now-classic Gears Of War in 2006.

Ideas for a Gears Of War film have been getting tossed around Movieland ever since the game sold over five million copies worldwide, and it looks like Legendary Pictures wants to make it happen.

Execs at both Legendary and Epic have had little to say about the possible acquisition (other than to confirm that negotiations are underway). However, this news is surfacing less than two weeks after top-suit over at Legendary, Thomas Tull, resigned from the board of Brash Entertainment, the video game licensing/publishing company he co-founded, and whose performance he had reportedly been unhappy with for some time.
