HBO’s Game of Thrones returns for season 2 this April, and love for George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world is at an all-time high. Fans of the Song of Fire & Ice book series know what’s in store for the show, but for those who entered the world of Westeros through a television screen, be warned: this world is about to get much bigger.

There are so many new faces and places that will be introduced in Game of Thrones season 2, and today we have some images of the actors who will be bringing these new players in the game to life – along with some new looks at familiar faces like Tyrion Lannister and House Stark’s surviving members (Arya, Sansa, Catelyn, Robb, Bran and Jon Snow). We’ve also included a brief ...

Click to continue reading ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 2 Character Images: Meet the New Faces

We discuss visual effects a lot here on Screen Rant – what looks good, what looks bad, etc. – and so, we thought it only fitting to let our readers know about those films that were recognized at the 2012 Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. The annual event recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.

With 2011 movies like Transformers 3, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Captain America, Hugo, and animated fare like Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss In Boots and Rango all sporting some impressive visual splendor, the big winners of the night were somewhat of a surprise – while others weren’t that surprising at all.

The highly anticipated trailer for 'Game of Thrones' Season 2 -- entitled 'Shadow' -- is finally here, with major hints as to what we have in store come April 1st.

Game of Thrones was arguably the most well-received and critically-acclaimed new genre show of the last year – and now that the 2011 Emmys and the Golden Globes have come and gone, you can add award-winning to that list, as well.

Since closing out its first season way back in June, fans of the HBO fantasy series – based on the popular A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R. R. Martin – have been waiting impatiently for their first glimpse of Season 2.

And while we’ve previously seen teasers (and a featurette) for the forthcoming season, today’s the first time we’re seeing ...

Click to continue reading ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 2: ‘Shadow’ Trailer

A relatively subdued Ricky Gervais took the stage as host of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In his second year as host, it appears that all of last year’s controversy surrounding Gervais’ hosting must have impacted the funnyman, as all of his jabs appeared a little too nice compared to what was said last year.

For much of the evening, Michael Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, swept the Golden Globes in the comedy category, coming out on top overall with three wins for Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Picture. Over on the drama side, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took home the most awards in the drama category with a Best Actor win for George Clooney and Best Picture.

Three weeks ago we learned that Monster director Patty Jenkins would no longer be stepping into Kenneth Branagh’s shoes to helm Thor 2. Shortly thereafter, as more details poured out on situation, fingers pointed towards Marvel Studios as the source of the controversy, indicating that they had fired her from the job, much to the displeasure of Natalie Portman, who was an advocate of Jenkins getting the gig in the first place.

Jenkins marks yet another names joining the quickly growing list of directors separating with the studio over “creative differences.” Marvel, in a hurry to lockdown a replacement, reportedly had TV directors Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan on their shortlist, both of whom worked on Game of Thrones. As it turns out, one of them got the gig.

[WARNING!!! THIS POST CONTAINS GAME of THRONES Season 1 SPOILERS!!!]

.

.

.

Today we have news on the second season of Game of Thrones, HBO’s Golden Globe-nominated television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s popular fantasy series.

Season One of HBO’s break out hit was filled with intrigue, adventure, beautiful women, dashing men, and a turn by Golden Globe nominee Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent) as the irascible yet lovable imp, Tyrion Lannister. It also included controversial moments of incest, child murder, brother-sister love and the eventual shocking (and some would say infuriating) beheading of the show’s star, Sean Bean.

Unsurprisingly, expectations are incredibly high for season two. How will show-runner David Bennioff and his team ...

Click to continue reading ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 2 Featurette: The Irish Countryside of Westeros

Much-ballyhooed (in a good and bad way) comedian Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Annual Golden Globes Ceremony for a third time in 2012, when the 69th annual iteration of the event takes place.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially announced its nominations for the 2012 Golden Globes show – and, just like any year, there are many obvious selections, a few surprises, and more than a handful of choices that are bound to rub moviegoers of all shades the wrong (or, in some cases, the right) way.

Filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, led the way with six Globe nods total; co-writer/helmer Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and director Tate Taylor’s The Help were close behind.
It’s hard to believe that there is anything more anticipated by HBO subscribers than Game of Thrones season 2. The show is a bonafide hit, and author George R. R. Martin’s novels are flying off shelves and converting more and more people into fans of the world of Westeros and its inhabitants.

In that sense, there are going to be some people who see this new Game of Thrones season 2 trailer and already know the delicious tale of medieval politics that are about to play out, while those who haven’t read volume 2 of the books – the aptly titled “A Clash of Kings” – will have to glimpse and wonder (with equal if not greater anticipation) what comes next.

Game of Thrones has caught on like wildfire. These days it’s hard to walk the streets for long before you run across somebody with their face buried in one of the volumes from author George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series. If you don’t run across somebody reading the books, then there’s still good chance they’re a fan of HBO’s adaptation of the series, which enjoyed a well-received first season, and is currently shooting a highly-anticipated second season.

HBO knows that Game of Thrones fandom is at a rabid high right now, as there was a massive amount of buzz surrounding a season 2 teaser trailer for the show that released a few months back.
We’re still months away from new Game of Thrones episodes, but this latest casting announcement will let fans know how far the production has come. Rose Leslie of UK TV’s Downtown Abbey has been cast as Ygritte, a major character for the second season.

Scottish actress Leslie is best known for her seven-episode run on Downtown Abbey. The critically acclaimed British show takes place in a WWI-era manor where her character Gwen was a servant. She’s also played on Case Histories and is expected to return to Downtown Abbey when it enters its second series of production.

Excitement for Game of Thrones has reached a fever pitch, and we’re still about half a year out from any new episodes – but HBO showed fans a brief bit of mercy just before the Boardwalk Empire premiere, when it aired the first teaser trailer for the new season.

Game of Thrones began shooting for season 2 this summer, with major casting announcements sporadically being announced or leaked.
When Jane Lynch took the stage for The 63rd Emmy Awards after a chaotic opening number, one should have known that the night will be filled with some surprising winners being announced.

After Modern Family practically swept the awards in comedy, with wins in all but two categories, it was on to reality/variety. Once again, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart took home the coveted awards in this category, but not without The Amazing Race and Saturday Night Live each picking up a single award.

When it comes to new regulars and guest stars on upcoming television shows, we’ve got a lot of news to report this week – including casting updates for Game of Thrones, Southland, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Terra Nova, and American Horror Story.

Let’s get started.

Game of Thrones

HBO’s well-received fantasy epic is currently filming its second season. Major book characters Stannis, Davos, Melisandre, Brienne and Margaery have already been cast, but new info out of the UK indicates that two more have been added.

The first is Yara Greyjoy, known to A Song of Ice and Fire readers as Asha. She’s the headstrong sister of Season 1′s Theon, who will be making her own power plays during the ...

Click to continue reading TV Casting Update: Game Of Thrones, Southland, Law & Order

HBO’s acclaimed fantasy series 'Game of Thrones' has pleased network executives – but they are uncertain about how long the show can be on the air - given that author George R.R. Martin has yet to finish the books.

It has won over the hearts of fans and critics alike, but HBO remains cautiously optimistic about whether Game of Thrones will be on television long enough to complete George R.R. Martin’s series of books.

As far as the network is concerned, the longevity of the series is in the hands of the writing and producing team of D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.

The trick of producing a television program that’s based on a series of books (which haven’t yet reached a conclusion) is there may come a time when the show simply catches up to the unwritten book material. Given series creator Martin’s extraordinarily long turnover from book-to-book (five years between A Storm of Swords and A Feast for Crows as well ...

Click to continue reading HBO Unsure When ‘Game of Thrones’ Will End

Fresh off three major Emmy nominations for Game Of Thrones, HBO has announced a trio of new cast members. Carice van Houten, Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham will join the cast for Season 2.

Easily the biggest player as far as the larger Game of Thrones story is concerned is Dillane, who’ll take the role of Stannis Baratheon. Stannis is the late King Robert’s younger brother (but older than “King” Renly), the true successor that Eddard Stark tried to set on the throne instead of Prince Joffrey.

HBO’s Game of Thrones is starting production on its second season this month, and one of the biggest characters for Season 2 has been cast.

Gwendoline Christie, a startlingly tall British stage actress, will play Brienne of Tarth.

WARNING: MINOR GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS FOLLOW!

In George R. R. Martin’s A Clash Of Kings (the source material for Game of Thrones‘ second season) Brienne is the only child of Lord Tarth, and heir to a small but proud piece of land. Brienne is naturally tomboyish, a trait that her huge stature and man-like strength do little to diminish. She becomes a warrior at a young age.
