There are only two weeks worth of new DVD/Blu-ray releases left in 2011, and as the year winds to a close, finding quality movies on the new release shelves is becoming harder to do.

This week offers movie fans just 19 total new releases to choose from, and of those, we could find nine that interested us, such as Warrior and Midnight in Paris, both four-star films. Mixed with them are a handful of mildly entertaining but ultimately forgettable films – Dolphin Tale, A Farewell to Arms and Margin Call – and a couple of films that don’t quite live up to expectations – Colombiana and Straw Dogs.

Futurama Renewed For 7th Season on Comedy Central

Cries of joy were heard for dozens of parsecs in every direction when Comedy Central facilitated Futurama‘s return in fall 2010. Today the network ordered another 26 episodes, scheduled to air over the next two years.

The second half of Futurama‘s 6th season will begin airing in June. The first 13 episodes of the 7th season will air in summer 2012, with the last 13 airing in the summer of 2013. This is a much slower release schedule than bigger-budget shows like The Simpsons or American Dad, but matches Futurama‘s cable compatriots Comedy Central and Adult Swim.

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases are all new to the home video market. No significant re-releases hit shelves this week, so we will focus on the summer movies finally available to watch at home.

There are devils and secret agents hiding amongst us, sleazeballs and gossip queens infecting today’s youth and some animated humor to keep you busy in the final weeks of 2010. If you are still looking for a holiday gift, DVD and Blu-rays are the safe bet. Between this and last week, you have plenty of choices.

Comedy Central Rebrands Itself With New Logo, New Look

After fifteen years of use the current “tower” Comedy Central logo is being put out to pasture. The replacement, a “C” surrounded by a reverse “C” and flanked by the channel’s name (with “Central” flipped) was announced today, and will replace the current logo early next year.

Here’s a little perspective: the last time Comedy Central made a significant branding change, neither The Daily Show nor South Park had premiered on its airwaves. The new logo will accompany a complete overhaul of the channel’s graphics and advertising. The new mark bears an unmistakable likeness to the “©” copyright symbol, used in the United States and around the world to delineate a registered copyright. Coincidentally, it also bears a resemblance to the logo for the Federal Communications Commission, an organization that hasn’t exactly seen eye-to-eye with Comedy Central ...

Futurama Season 6 Finale Marks Milestone 100th Episode

Earlier this summer, Matt Groening’s brilliant animated series Futurama began showing new episodes on Comedy Central. It was a milestone occasion for fans of the show who had been waiting for new episodes since 2003 (not including the four straight-to-DVD movies from 2007 to 2009). Now, Futurama is celebrating its own milestone with the premiere of its 100th episode.

Getting to 100 episodes is an achievement for any show, let alone one that’s gone through as many ups and downs as Futurama. That’s why I’m excited for the show’s Season 6 finale. In typical Futurama fashion, it combines social satire and poignant character observations within a traditional sci-fi narrative.

Futurama Returns to the 31st Century with ‘Recap-O-Rama’ Video

In what can only be described as the best thing that has ever happened, a brand new episode of Futurama will premiere tomorrow night on Comedy Central at 10PM EST/9PM CST.

It is the first time fans of Matt Groening’s brilliant animated comedy have been treated to new episodes since Fox foolishly pulled the plug on the show in 2003 (not counting Season Five which was comprised of four direct-to-dvd Futurama movies split into episodes).
Here’s a synopsis for the one-hour special premiere.

“After a devastating spaceship crash, the Professor attempts to resuscitate the crew with his birth machine. Later, Leela and Zapp Brannigan find themselves stranded on an Eden-like planet.”

Images From Futurama’s New Season

The time that animation geeks have been praying for is almost upon us; Futurama will be returning to the airwaves this June on Comedy Central, and today we have promo images from the first new episode of the show to air in seven years!

These new images hint that we’ll be getting back the same Futurama that 20th Century Fox axed back in 2003, chock-full of crazy characters and mockery of the past. Can’t wait.

Like Family Guy, Futurama was an animated show that Fox launched to help build a solid block of animated programming around The Simpsons around the turn of the Millennium. Movie Media Roundup: ‘Eclipse’, Last Airbender, Predators, and More

We’ve got the latest movie media roundup featuring an excellent collection of posters and pictures from several upcoming projects.

Today’s roundup includes images from The Last Airbender, Despicable Me, Predators, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Futurama, as well as potential concept artwork from the Godzilla reboot.

First up, we have the new international poster for M. Night Shyamalan’s big-budget, 3D adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon The Last Airbender.

Weekly TV Wrap Up – August 6th, 2009

Today’s Weekly TV Wrap Up has some news about the Syfy channel picking up a show called Alphas, news on Chuck air dates, plus renewal news on In Plain Sight and other USA shows.

I’m also chatting about some Ghost Whisperer bits, Futurama voice casting news and some news about Medium on CBS. I’ve also found some casting news on Game Of Thrones.

Syfy Picks Up Alphas

Syfy has picked up a 90-minute action-adventure pilot called Alphas.

Alphas is about a team of ordinary citizens who possess hyper-developed neurological abilities. Each person has a slightly special feature about them, but as a team, they combine to have extra-special skills. It’s to be written by Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand), Michael Karnow and BermanBraun Television.

For whatever reason, NBC and ABC passed on Alphas while Syfy, having the opportunity, jumped on this superhero genre show.

Today in Screen Rant’s weekly TV Wrap Up, we have some great casting news for 24, we’ll be talking about David Carradine’s appearance in Fox’s new show Mental and we also have some Heroes casting news, the possibility that My Name Is Earl may be getting new legs, some news on Ghost Whisperer, The Sarah Connor Chronicles coming to DVD and a bit about Futurama‘s, err, future.

We’ll wrap it up with ratings from last week. This week in the ratings section, I thought I’d try something new and toss in some cable viewer numbers.
