The nominees have been announced for the fourth annual Scream Awards, held every year by Spike TV. The decisively more “fan-friendly” award ceremony (compared to the Oscars) honors films from the sci-fi, fantasy, horror and comic-book genres of movies, TV shows and comic books. The awards are described as, “the first and only global event of its kind,” to honor those genres.

The Scream 2009 nominees were chosen by the Advisory Board of Hollywood and Genre Leaders, a list which this year includes the likes of Wes Craven, Roland Emmerich, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Eli Roth and Zack Snyder, plus many more. The event will be taped on Saturday, October 17th this year at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles, and will air on Spike TV ten days later on Tuesday, October 27th (check for local times).

Along with the awards, the show will also be airing some exclusive, world premiere of footage of some of the most anticipated movies of 2010! Presenters and musicians for the event are to be announced shortly.

Kristen Stewart, “Twilight”

Emma Watson, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”

For the rest of the nominees you can head over to Spike.com, where you can also cast your votes.

Although some of the awards are truly suspect (how the hell The Spirit got nominated for ANYTHING is beyond me), I still like the overall celebration of the type of sci-fi, fantasy, comic book and horror films we here at Screen Rant revel in Although I won’t go into a specific rundown of who I think should win, I’d like to throw my opinion in the ring for a few of them:

Lost should win Best TV Show (I love Dexter, but it’s no Lost); Best Horror Movie should go to Let The Right One In (I would say Drag Me To Hell, but since that’s a comedy too, Let The Right One takes it for me); Best Actor in a Fantasy Movie Or TV Show should go to Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; and Best Comic Book Movie should (EASILY) go to Watchmen.

But enough from me, what and who will YOU vote for? As stated, you can cast your votes over at Spike.com, and you can see if the winners match your picks when the Scream Awards 2009 air on October 27th this year on Spike TV.

Having hacked and slashed his way to a $70 million worldwide payday, it seems as though Jason Voorhees has made a bigger comeback than Mickey Rourke.

Now as we all know, in the world of Hollywood horror movies, a strong box office take is almost always a go-sign for a string of increasingly terrible sequels (cough, Saw, cough). Friday The 13th, it seems, is no exception (even though it suffered a brutal 80% drop on its second weekend).

Or is it?

According to early reports, Platinum Dunes and New Line’s next installment of Friday the 13th will be a “follow up,” rather than a “sequel.” Jason Voorhees will still be the bad guy holding the machete, but Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the guys who wrote the script for the “reboot” and will handle the script for the “follow-up,” are trying to steer clear of the campy antics that plagued the latter installments of the original series.

[SIDEBAR: Am I the only one who is getting tired of Hollywood's bottomless buzz-word dictionary? "Follow-ups," "reboots," "relaunches," "re-imaginings..." Just pick a damn phrase and stick with it!]

So does ignoring the established canon mean that Jason won’t be re-taking Manhattan, going back to hell or back into space? Probably. So does that mean the filmmakers will have to come up with (gasp) a brand new storyline?

I’ll believe it if and when I see it. And not one second before.

On the business side, as of now it’s looking like Friday The 13th (reboot) director Marcus Nispel won’t be helming the follow-up. Also up in the air are the fates of stars Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti, whose characters were the only ones to survive Jason’s rampage. Padalecki is still committed to his starring role on Supernatural, while Righetti has found success on The Mentalist this year. Roping the two young stars into doing another slasher flick could be a hard sell.

Right now Platinum Dunes and New Line are focusing on their Nightmare On Elm Street reboot (if that’s the word for it), which is set to begin shooting in a few weeks. But don’t expect Jason to be gone too long: the studios are looking to have the next Friday The 13th in theaters as soon as 2010.

How do you feel about a Friday The 13th sequel “follow-up?” Are you ready for more Voorhees mayhem, or was the reboot already more than you wanted to see?

Short version: This fresh take on the original Friday the 13th actually works.

Screen Rant reviews Friday the 13th

This review of Friday the 13th is for people who are fans of the 1980s style of slasher horror movies.

If you are not into movies whose sole purpose is to display gore, a variety of ways to kill people (who you probably wouldn’t mind seeing come to a grisly end), sex and nudity via thinly developed characters, then move along folks – nothing to see here.

If however you’re looking for an R-rated horror thrill on the big screen, read on.

Now it’s a well established fact here on Screen Rant that for the most part I am not a fan of movie remakes. Most of them are made simply to cash in on a well known film and they’re usually poorly done and bring nothing new to the story put forth in the original. While I did see the the Dawn of the Dead remake which came out in 2004, I haven’t seen Rob Zombie’s version of Halloween, nor director Marcus Nispel’s version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Neither of those was very well received.

The latter is relevant because Nispel also directed this update of Friday the 13th, and I have to say I think he did a decent job of rebooting the world of Jason Voorhees. The original film was released in 1980 and cost a whopping $700,000 to produce (about $1.8MM in today’s dollars). This new version cost about 10X that much, but frankly, you don’t really see that on the screen. Then again I guess anything under $20 million is considered low budget these days.

Anyway, enough history… what about THIS one?

I have a feeling even among slasher film fans, there will be a split on this one – personally I thought the director did a great job of refreshing the story/franchise for 2009.

The film opens right off the bat with a connection to the original – before the familiar Paramount Studios mountain is off the screen we here the trademark “ch-ch-ch, ah-ah-ah” from the older films. From there we are thrust right into a girl being chased through the woods on a stormy night (summer, 1980), shown in black and white. As it turns out we’re looking at the final moments in the original film, where the lone surviving girl from the film faces off against Jason’s mother.

From there we cut to present day with a bunch of young twenty-somethings out in the woods backpacking – it soon becomes known that the reason they’re out in the middle of nowhere is to look for a marijuana garden out in the middle of the woods. A couple of them fancy themselves entrepreneurs and are thinking about all the cash they’ll make off selling the pot.

We have your standard cliche cross-section of characters: The “good” couple, the geek, the hot babe, and the jerk. Within about 10 minutes of the film starting you’ll have already heard about 7 f-bombs and seen one pair of obviously synthetic breasts. Oh yes, this is indeed rated R, and we haven’t even gotten to the gore.

They’re camped out right outside Camp Crystal Lake and “geek boy” tells the story of Jason and how his mother killed a bunch of camp counselors almost 30 years ago. He goes off to relieve himself and finds the pot garden, while the “good” couple (the girl is concerned about her sick mom and feels bad for having left for the weekend) wander into Camp Crystal Lake proper and end up exploring an old run down house. I don’t have to tell you who lives in it. Meanwhile hot babe and jerk boy end up having sex in a tent.

Now that everyone is sufficiently separated, Jason appears to kill them all one at a time, each in a different and gruesome way. This all happens within about the first 20 minutes of the film, so you’re immediately thrust into the action and ramped up to 60mph. I was wondering how they could kill off all the characters so quickly, just when the opening title FRIDAY THE 13TH appears on the screen, and the audience cheered. My thought was basically “oh man, you mean this is only really getting started now?”

So fast forward another six weeks and we meet another group of primarily obnoxious young folks. We have the rich guy who thinks he’s king of the world, the sweet girl who for some reason is his girlfriend, a black fellow who loves to jokingly pull the race card on his buddies to yank their chains, a brawny guy and his babe girlfriend, and an Asian guy (a pretty funny Aaron Yoo) who is the comedian of the bunch.

Rich guy and girlfriend run into Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki), the brother of one of the girls we saw in the previous scenes – he’s distributing flyers stating she’s missing and he is determined to find her. The party crew goes off to rich boy’s daddy’s expensive cabin in the woods while Clay goes around town on his beater motorcycle looking for anyone who’s seen his sister.

Eventually Clay and rich guy’s girlfriend come across Jason’s (Derek Mears) cabin and see him bringing home a dead body. Soon thereafter, one by one the party gang are picked off by Jason until we’re down to only a couple of survivors.

Now for “purists,” you need to understand that even though this has been called a remake of Friday the 13th, it’s more accurately a remake of Friday the 13th Part 2, as it picks up right at the end of the first film. For the film to have Jason as the antagonist, there was really no other way to do it. Now as to the variety of “kills,” I’ve heard complaints that they weren’t “creative” enough, but geez… Jason dispatches his victims in this film using a machete, bow & arrow, fireplace poker, antlers, screwdriver, bear trap, fire and even an impalement for good measure.

I liked that they brought Jason back to the basics – gone is the quasi-supernatural aspect of the character. Here he’s just a huge dude who likes to kill people (up until the very end where they bend that way a bit). They don’t run for five minutes and then he suddenly appears ahead of them and that sort of thing. I found him to be very physically imposing and brutal. The film had lots of nods to the first two or three films, right down to the ending which was a definite hat tip.

I even felt a bit of suspense and dread during the movie, which didn’t resort to an endless number of “jump scares” that are so common in PG-13 horror movies. Oh sure, it had a few but it didn’t depend on that as its primary scare tactic.

So what’s not so great? There’s no real getting to know the characters here – they’re all pretty much cardboard cut outs set up like bowling pins just so they can get killed. There was one scene that just really didn’t fit and was obviously inserted into the film just to show you how Jason ends up with a hockey mask (he starts out with a burlap bag on his head). Also, after the adrenaline-pumping opening 20 minutes, the rest of the film just wasn’t able to quite measure up and it suffered for it.

Overall though I thought it was a fresh take on the 1980s slasher genre that accomplishes what it sets out to do: Scare the heck out of you.

But for God’s sake – LEAVE THE KIDS AT HOME for this one.

Although the first two aren’t all that great (which is understandable considering we’re only seeing a snapshot of an hopefully much more exciting scene) but the third one looks great. There’s something about just seeing the legendary horror character simply standing there… watching.

I wonder if that’s in the actually movie or if it’s just a promo shot – the first two images seem to suggest they’re going to go with the full-on chase style horror movie as opposed to the subtle, “what you don’t see is scarier” approach that almost always ends up working a helluva a lot better.

I have always tried to give these remakes (horror or otherwise) a fair shake but it almost seems like on purpose that almost every one is at most average and at worst terrible. I’m willing to give this remake of yet another classic horror film a fair go as well – but I’m not holding my breath. I hope, as I always do, that it will pleasantly surprise me.

So are you liking the look of these photos and how this horror remake is shaping up? Or do you think they should have left the character well alone?

Friday the 13th is set to hit theaters on February 13th this year.

I’m calling this non-news and saying “for some reason” because I said here on Screen Rant almost 2 months ago that this new version was not a remake of the original 1980 film.

Everyone else was calling it a remake when the project was announced, but no one seemed to remember that Jason Voorhees, the hockey mask wearing villain of the series didn’t even appear in the first film, except as a child in a flashback scene. His mother was the killer in the first movie.

Here’s a quote from the site, from someone on the inside of the production:

“It’s not a remake, don’t even expect an origin tale – as some production listings around Hollywood are pegging it as. Imagine if there was a story to be told somewhere between parts two and four, just add water [from Camp Crystal Lake], insert a leaner, meaner, faster Jason Voorhees, set to ‘blend’ and you’ve got the recipe for what Dunes, writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift and director Marcus Nispel got cookin’.”

Ok, so a “leaner, meaner, faster” Jason. That’s new, but to be expected if they want to put some sort of different twist to the series. But other than that, if your a regular Screen Rant reader then you’ve already known about this for two months.

Marcus Nispel is in final negotiations to direct the Platinum Dunes remake of Friday The 13th.

So who is Marcus Nispel? Nispel has directed dozens of music videos as well as being the man behind the megaphone on features The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the remake, not the original) and Pathfinder (again, the remake not the original).

The news will probably have fanboys across the net up in arms, but let’s be honest, his remake of Chainsaw was much better than anybody had anticipated. It’s far from great, but compared to the horror remakes of the last few years, it looks like Citizen Kane. On the other hand Pathfinder took a brutal beating both at the box office and by critics, earning less than it’s production cost even including overseas box office and garnering a 12% positive rating over at Rotten Tomatoes.

Several years ago Nispel was also set to direct the Arnold Schwarzenegger film End of Days, but he left the project due to “creative differences.” Let me interpret that for you: That means that Arnold and Marcus didn’t get along. Peter “The Journey Man” Hyams would go on to direct that film instead.

Nispel’s attachment to this film could be either a blessing or a curse, but let’s hope he keeps it more like his Chainsaw rather than Pathfinder.

Time will tell if this Friday The 13th is unlucky for both us and the studio.

And yes, that’s right, I said a remake of the second, not the first, Friday the 13th movie.

New Line studio has put writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift on the job. These are the same guys who wrote the entertaining, if not definitive in conclusion Freddy vs Jason movie.

Everyone else is calling this a remake of the original film, but it’s not.

In the original film released back in 1980, the killer turned out to be Jason Vorheees’ mother, with Jason appearing briefly right at the very end of the film. The second movie, which came out a year later was the first full-on Jason-with-a-machete flick. It didn’t take place in Camp Crystal Lake (the setting of the original film) but at the camp right next to it. This movie places Jason at the camp, so it seems to me it’s much closer to the second story than the first.

There wasn’t much substance to these original films, so I can’t really get too fired up on an anti-remake tirade. I don’t even know if “remake” qualifies as a term for this… maybe “re-hash” is a more accurate description.

Anyway, it looks like they’re trying to fast track it to beat the impending strike that I’m sick to death of hearing about. Oh, and if it means anything, Michael Bay is one of the producers on the project.
