In this weeks TV Wrap Up, I’ve found casting news about Stargate Universe, Supernatural, Psych, Friday Night Lights, Smallville, Criminal Minds and Stephen King’s book-turned-tv-series, Cell!

As usual, I have a ratings recap at the bottom, but it’s the Summer Lite edition being as how we’re in repeat mode for the Summer (except for the reality drabble that is intertwined throughout the chart).

Let’s “git ‘er done“, shall we?

.

Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe is looking to cast a “name actress” to play the wife of Robert Carlyle’s character.

These will be flashback scenes since she will be dead by the time we see her.

Supernatural

The CW’s Supernatural is adding a recurring role of a possessed mechanic named Raphael. He’s supposedly going to be possessed by one of the most powerful entities in the universe.

.

Psych

David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London) has signed up to appear in the Halloween episode of Psych. He’ll be playing a one Dr. Ken Tucker, who is a self-serving sociopath!

Season 4 of Psych will be starting on August 7th.

.

Friday Night Lights

Casting has begun for season 4 of Friday Night Lights. As high school students graduate, they move on. So too must Adrianne Palicki, Zach Gilford, and Minka Kelly.

The rolls they’re looking to fill are named Vince, Luke, Jess and Becky.

I’ll miss watching Palicki on FNL, but she’s moving onto Supernatural, so I won’t go through any withdrawals.

Source: EW

.

Smallville

Word on the street is that the upcoming season of Smallville will have a full on Clark and Lois romance going. I know many of you are of mixed opinions on this issue, but we’ll just have to take what they give us and hope we don’t suffer too much from any forced acting or stretched out story lines.

I guess this means Lois comes back from where ever she went last season.

Oops, does that make this a SPOILER? Sorry.

.

Criminal Minds

If you’re wondering if Hotch survived the season finale – heck, I don’t know! But what I’ve read is that they are casting for the role of an emergency room doctor.

That can’t be bad news. Can it?

Source: EW

.

Stephen King’s Cell

So how do you get turned into a rampaging killer? Quite possibly by a signal sent through your cell phone, according to Stephen King.

His novel Cell is being taken up by John Harrison (Tales From The Darkside: The Movie) who is putting together a script for a 4-hour mini-series based on the book.

I don’t know about you, but hopefully Harrison will figure out how to liven up the ending. I’ve always found endings to King’s movies lacking something, but could never put a finger on it. But that’s just me.

.

TV Ratings

On the big networks, CBS took the majority of the top spots, with NCIS once again ranking supreme in the ratings. The Mentalist & CSI: Miami were the other crime dramas filling out the top-10.

Trivia: Did you know that ABC turned down the CSI franchise when it was being shopped around? Oops.

In the oddity department, I’m almost relieved to see that Big Brother premiered in 18th. For me, it shows that at least one more reality cornerstone is slowly losing its grip on the viewers. My exuberance is short lived though, as I realize the other reality competition shows for dancing and singing are still ranking up there.

On Cable, The Closer keeps closing the door on the other shows, Royal Pains is hanging in there, while the Michael Jackson memorial dominated the top 20 in different slots, as each hour of the event was broken down and placed in the rankings.

Nielsen Top Twenty, for the week ending July 12, 2009, all viewers:

Welcome to my corner of Thursdays where we get to chat about some of the other goings on from the world of (soon to be totally digital) TV.

This week, we take a look at some noise about Chuck, news about some Dexter casting, the premiere date for Eureka on Sci-Fi (SyFy) and why Eleventh Hour got dumped.

While we’re at it, I also chat about TNT ordering it’s own version of V, Doctor Who guest starring in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and if there are any Gigantor fans out there, I’ve got a bit of news for you.

And of course, at the end of the article, I entice you with a ratings chart showing how our favored shows did last week.

 Curious Tidbit About Chuck

Despite the lengthy wait from NBC to actually commit to Chuck, NBC entertainment president Ben Silverman is being noted in saying that if the ratings for Chuck do well enough, they may deliver more than the 13 episodes that the network originally committed to.

He then mentioned that extending the episode count would pair it up with Friday Night Lights in the summer. Hmm, historically, FNL has aired on Friday nights. Are they looking to air Chuck on Friday nights or move FNL to another night? Curious.

He then notes how they want to keep Chuck on the air for years to come.

This, about a show they couldn’t commit to until the near last minute before the upfronts, and then after some cost concessions. Why weren’t they saying that before the upfronts? I don’t know about you, but I’m putting my knee high boots on because I can’t stand lip-service.

Source: TV Guide

Dexter’s New Bad Guy

Sources are reporting that John Lithgow is joining the season 4 cast of Dexter as Walter Simmons. Hmm. Mr. Simmons is an unassuming suburbanite who lives a dual life as one of America’s most prolific and deadliest serial killers.

When Simmons moves to Miami, Dexter becomes obsessed with his efficient killing methods and the fact that he’s escaped capture for close to 30 years.

Season 4 of Dexter starts on Sept. 27.

Source: Entertainment Weekly

Eureka Premiere Date

The Sci-Fi Channel will be premiering Eureka on July 10th.

A small death knell in the background can be heard because it’s only going to have 10 episodes aired.

What’s up with that Sci-Fi?

Why Was Eleventh Hour dumped?

Despite decent ratings, Eleventh Hour was dumped by CBS, as we discovered at the CBS upfronts.

Yet decent ratings isn’t good enough when they have other shows in their lineup doing much better. At least that’s the spin that the CBS Sr. VP of prime time, Kelly Kahl, is saying. And to some extent, that’s true since they’ve nailed down 5th through 12th place in the ratings chart from last week.

Eleventh Hour was a casualty to make room for new shows… they say.

Me, I say that since I reported back in August of 2008 that Eleventh Hour was one of the most expensive shows to hit any network, coming in at a rumored $2 million per episode price tag is what killed it.

Source: TV Guide

TNT Keeping Up With V

It looks like the TNT network is playing catch up now that ABC has V coming down the pipe.

TNT has ordered a pilot for a yet to be named alien-invasion TV series. They’re looking to DreamWorks TV and executive producers Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Robert Rodat to bring it in a big way.

The story is reported to be set six months after Earth is invaded by aliens.

I hate carbon copy catch up shows, no matter who helms them. At least the premise of idea. Now they may hit it out of the park, but I remember Spielberg’s last sci-fi on TV effort, Taken, and I wasn’t thrilled by it.

Source: Sci-Fi Wire

It’s been an interesting week indeed. Today I bring some DVD news about Star Trek: TOS, Pushing Daisies, Ugly Betty, Breaking Bad and Friday Night Lights. It’s all good!

I’ve also have a couple of bits of business news about Disney and its slow, creeping take over of the entertainment world!

REMINDER: Don’t forget, Friday night on The Sci-Fi Channel: Stargate Continuum. It’s a great movie. Vic and I saw it last year with the cast of the show. There was a great time had by all.

Let’s start the show with the numbers from the last week of television viewing:

Since many of you said you were interested in numbers for a lot of shows, well, I slapped in a lot of show! As you can see, American Idol trumped everyone yet again. The first non-reality show, The Mentalist, was third on the list and then the shows scatter throughout from there!

Friday Night Lights

NBC and DirecTV have come to terms and Friday Night Lights will be given 2 more seasons! As you know, the two networks have worked out an agreement to share the costs of production, keeping the show on the air. DirecTV airs it first, then NBC.

Something you should prepare yourself for is that it’s a show about high school. Students do move on after graduating. I just thought you should know.

Breaking Bad

A late breaking bit to add to my article here is that Breaking Bad, despite only being 4 episodes into its second season, has been picked up for a third season.

Source: THR

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTS AND OTHER NOISE

ABC, ESPN and YouTube

The Leader of the Band, Disney, is eyeballing a deal that will put ABC and ESPN videos on YouTube. This is all a plan that will help Google make YouTube a more commercial entity for them from the advertising that will ensue.

This means that Disney Media Networks will be able to sell advertising attached to its content. Oh lord, that means an ad about a Disney movie every few minutes. Goody.

Google and Disney will be splitting the ad revenue generated from their partnership.

Starting next month, you’ll start seeing channels for ESPN, ABC Entertainment, ABC News, ABC Family and SOAPnet.

When I watch On Demand, CBS has an ad or two. NBC, well, I don’t know. They charge 99 cents on this venue that has mostly free content. ABC, egads. The ABC On Demand venue has just as many ads for their upcoming movies as they do ads on the network when it airs live. The hard part is, it’s the same ad, over and over. I hope they don’t do that with their online content.

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Speaking Of Disney: Hulu

Huh? Not only is Disney looking to spread out to YouTube, they’re also looking to buy an equity stake in Hulu. Disney will probably look to distribute content to Hulu once this takes place.

The funny angle to this is that this is the cheapest route for Disney to get their content on Hulu, versus a direct licensing deal.

Crumbs… more ads on some Hulu content now. I’m doomed!

Source: THR

Guiding Light To End

I know you all probably have secretly scheduled this in your TiVo… It’s OK, you don’t have to admit it! All joking aside, the milestone this show represents warrants a little attention.

After 72 years, Guiding Light will be coming to an end. SEVENTY-TWO years… that was not a typo.

That comes out to 15,700 episodes that aired on radio and television. It started out as a 15 minute radio program and just grew from there.

I know this will probably shock you, but the 72-year-old veteran show is getting dumped because of reality shows like Judge Judy and Dr. Phil which crank in better ratings and cost less to produce. As it stands, the production company is looking at some other options to try and continue the show, like DirecTV or other avenues.

A few alums that ran across the show through the years: Kevin Bacon, James Earl Jones, one of my favorite vampires – Chris Sarandon*, Christopher Walken and Billy Dee Williams – just to name a few.

Its final episode airs on Friday, September 18th.

I have to go now. I’m going to go pray to my porcelain container after writing that Judge Judy and Dr. Phil helped destroy a television legacy.

*Does anyone know what I’m referencing when I call Chris Sarandon one of my favorite vampires?

It’s another week and another Wrap Up article. I have a lot going on this week, so scroll slowly and keep your eye out for your favorite show! There is a cast note on Burn Notice, that I don’t believe is a spoiler, but now that I’m shell shocked, well, there you have it! Let’s get the ball rolling, shall we?

Battlestar Galactica

This week is the finale for Battlestar Galactica. The series finale that is. It’s been quite the journey and I believe, if all the hype is correct, a fruitful ending. We shall see.

The finale is a 2-hour episode. Prior to that, last weeks episode airs and The Sci-Fi Channel advertised a Battlestar Galactica Marathon for Friday.

Two And A Half Men & Big Bang

Both Two and Half Men and The Big Bang Theory were renewed. The big thing about that is that they were both renewed for multiple seasons. Two and Half Men is renewed through to 2012, and Big Bang, until 2011. That, is a lot of faith!

Source: TV Guide

Friday Night Lights

NBC is in what they call active negotiations with DirectTV.

In case you didn’t know, the deal with DirectTV is that Friday Night Lights season airs on DirectTV first, then it airs on NBC. Both have a shot at showing the series and they share in costs of the show. Almost a win/win, especially with a show that has a decent following.

The uber-cool news is that the negotiations may be for a multiple season contract renewal! Sweet! Yes, I like Friday Night Lights.

Source: EW.com

Fringe

In case you’re worried, Fringe is not gone. It is on a break until April 7th, giving the much touted American Idol room to breath. Because we all know how much you all love American Idol. Actually it was pretty funny when they let a 13th contestant into the semi’s, then the phone number they put for that person turned out to be some phone sex line. American Idol, indeed!

Leverage

if you were watching Leverage, and wondering how well it did, wonder no more. It did well enough to at least be coming back for a 2nd season. I saw the ads. They looked cool! I hope to catch reruns and have a thought about the show.

Source: TV Guide

Alex O’Loughlin

Wait! That’s not a show! That’s a vampire! Or was.

In the comment section of last weeks weekly, I noted that O’Loughlin is contracted to CBS. I have proof!

Just in case we have a few fans of Alex O’Loughlin, I’d like to let you know that he has signed up for a new CBS show called Three Rivers. Well, at least for a pilot. Three Rivers is an interesting sounding concept, dealing with organ transplants and the scenarios therein, as seen through the eyes of the doctors, the donors and the recipients.

Yet as interesting as it sounds, it also sounds like it may be a little too cerebral for Bruce… I hope not. That way the Moonlight fans can get their dose of O’Loughlin for a little more screen time.

Source: THR

Burn Notice (POSSIBLE DVR / DVD / CAST SPOILER – Avert thine eyes!)

I’m going to try to say this with letting as little out of the bag as possible… I’m in enough trouble with everyone as it is: The role that Jennifer Esposito introduced at the end of season two of Burn Notice is being taken over by Journeyman’s Moon Bloodgood.

Esposito had to step down due to health issues, which, at the time of my writing this, I did not have any further details on.

No – I wasn’t traumatized by my other slips over the last few weeks.

Lily Cast News

The Gossip Girl spin-off, Lily, has cast Andrew McCarthy as Rick, a music business executive who is the father of our teenage Lily Rhodes.

Lily will be played by Brittany Snow. (American Dreams)

Matt Barr will be playing Keith van der Woodsen. A love interest of Lily’s.

Top 30 TV Shows Last Week

If you were curious as to what shows are dominating the tube, here’s a list. Not surprisingly, reality shows dominated in the top 3 spots. The numbers are in total viewers across all age brackets:

American Idol – Tuesday (Fox): 25.77 million,

American Idol – Wednesday (Fox): 25.55,

Dancing With the Stars (ABC, season premiere): 22.83,

CSI (CBS): 17.13,

Desperate Housewives (ABC): 14.60,

Criminal Minds (CBS): 14.34,

The Mentalist R (CBS): 14.32,

CSI: Miami (CBS): 14.21,

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC): 13.64,

CSI: NY (CBS): 13.63,

Outside the top-10 were:

NCIS R (CBS): 13.52, Two and a Half Men (CBS): 13.44, Cold Case (CBS): 13.02, 60 Minutes (CBS); 12.87, Survivor: Tocantins (CBS): 12.82, House (Fox): 12.38, Eleventh Hour (CBS): 11.61, 24 (Fox): 11.37, Lie to Me (Fox): 11.25, Law & Order: SVU (NBC): 11.07, The Unit (CBS): 10.87, ER (NBC): 10.86, Castle (ABC, series premiere): 10.76, Ghost Whisperer (CBS): 10.57, Brothers & Sisters (ABC): 10.43, The Amazing Race (CBS): 10.33, Without a Trace R (CBS): 10.22, Rules of Engagement (CBS): 9.95, Bones (Fox): 9.67, Numb3rs (CBS): 9.51

Speaking Of Numbers

If you were wondering how some of the new midseason shows might be doing with regards to the number of viewers they’re getting, (This excludes repeats)

Lie to Me (Fox) – Wednesday 8 p.m. (new time period) 11.25 million

Castle (ABC) – Monday 10 p.m. (series premiere) 10.76 million

Kings (NBC) – Sunday 8 p.m. (series premiere, two hours) 6.08 million

Homeland Security USA (ABC) – Tuesday 8 p.m.; 5.14 million

Dollhouse (Fox) – Friday 9 p.m.; 4.26 million

Howie Do It (NBC) – Friday 8 p.m.; 4.08 million

The Chopping Block (NBC) – Wednesday 8 p.m. (series premiere); 3.77 million

I guess it’s no lie when the ads say Lie to Me is the season’s hot new show. At least for the new midseason shows. Though folks told me Castle wasn’t that great, more than I expected tuned in to check it out! If they’re not careful, NBC is going to have to put the cooking reality show, The Chopping Block, well, on the chopping block if it doesn’t pick up. So much for pitching a show hosted by a man who made Gordon Ramsey cry.

Whacky Note: Television Show Trading Cards

Came across an odd entity of an article the other day: Television shows that have had trading cards made after the show! There’s some real classics in this list… as in old shows, not wow, I have to watch again shows! Though, there are some of those too!

American Idol,

The Addams Family,

Alias,

American Bandstand,

The Andy Griffith Show,

Angel,

The Avengers,

Babylon 5,

Batman,

Battlestar Galactica,

The Bionic Woman,

The Brady Bunch,

Buffy, the Vampire Slayer,

Charlie’s Angels,

Charmed,

Chips,

Combat,

CSI,

Dallas,

Flipper,

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,

The Gong Show,

Growing Pains,

Gunsmoke,

Happy Days,

I Love Lucy,

The Incredible Hulk,

JAG,

Lost,

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,

Mork & Mindy,

The Prisoner,

Roswell,

The Six Million Dollar Man,

Saturday Night Live,

Space 1999,

Star Trek,

Three’s Company,

24,

Twin Peaks and

Welcome Back, Kotter.

That’s it for this week!
