‘Brave’ and ‘Frankenweenie’ Images: Princesses & Re-Animated Dogs

Disney has unveiled new images for two very different animated offerings it has scheduled for release in 2012: the Pixar princess fairy tale, Brave, and director Tim Burton’s 3D stop-motion, movie based on his famous 1984 short film, Frankenweenie.

Multiple trailers and images have already been unveiled for Pixar’s next computer-animated flick; by comparison, only a handful of still frames and production photos have been released for Burton’s new movie, up to this point. Nonetheless, it shouldn’t be too long before a teaser trailer for Frankenweenie hits the scene.

‘Frankenweenie’ Images Reveal Tim Burton’s Latest Stop-Mo Project

Tim Burton fans are in for a treat next year, seeing how the filmmaker will provide them with a double dose of Gothic goodness: first, with his Dark Shadows TV show adaptation, and later with his Frankenweenie feature-length adaptation.

You can glance through early imagery from Frankenweenie in the gallery above – or, read on for more about the film, plus larger versions of those featured pictures.

Quick history: Frankenweenie was originally a live-action half-hour short film created by Burton back in 1984 – one that told the story of young Victor, a boy who uses cutting-edge science to bring his beloved recently-deceased pup Sparky back to life. Jump ahead some twenty-seven years (as well as numerous box office hits later) and the filmmaker is now revisiting his own quirky twist on the Frankenstein story – by turning it into a 3D stop-motion animated movie.

‘Frankenweenie’ Official Synopsis & Story Details

Fans of famed Gothic director Tim Burton have another one of his films to look forward to in the next couple of years – a feature-length 3D stop-motion animation film called Frankenweenie, which is based on Burton’s own 1984 live-action short film of the same name.

Although based on the ’84 short (which last 30 minutes), this feature-length version of Frankenweenie will inevitably flesh out a lot of the story and themes in order to fill a longer runtime. In order to give you a better idea of what to expect from the movie, Walt Disney Studos has released the official synopsis and some interesting production notes.

Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ & ‘John Carter of Mars’ Trade Release Dates

When FOX slated Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel-turned-original sci-fi project Prometheus for a March 9, 2012 release date, we knew there was going to be a game a chicken afoot. Disney had already staked out that same date to release their (3D) adaptation of John Carter of Mars, meaning that two tentpole sci-fi flicks would’ve been going head-to-head at the box office.

However, sci-fi fans hoping for a weekend blockbuster double-feature are going to be disappointed: Prometheus is now being released in June of 2012…where John Carter was originally scheduled.

For those keeping track, this whole Disney/FOX 2012 release date business has been like a game of musical chairs. I’ve mapped all the moves out for you:

Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ Gets A Voice Cast

It is no secret that Tim Burton has a core group of individuals with whom he prefers to work. The announcement that the primary voice cast of Burton’s upcoming flick, Frankenweenie, is composed entirely of familiar names in the Burtonverse comes as no surprise, then.

Burton first retold the classic story of Frankenstein back in 1984, with the short film Frankenweenie. 26 years and several blockbusters later, Burton is remaking that black & white, low-budget feature into a 3D, stop-motion animated feature, which is due on March of 2012.

Release Dates For ‘John Carter of Mars,’ & ‘Frankenweenie’ [Updated]

Two very different projects from the Mouse House – their adaptation of author Edgar Rice Burrough’s John Carter of Mars series and the feature-length treatment of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie – will arrive in theaters during the first half of 2012.

Frankenweenie will be unleashed (heh) first on March 9th of that year. Hmmm… a Walt Disney Pictures 3D, family-friendly production that was directed by Tim Burton is being released just two weeks before the official start of spring. Is the company perhaps hoping to replicate the success of this year’s Alice in Wonderland?

Disney Producer Talks Roger Rabbit 2 & Other Upcoming Projects

Empire caught up with accomplished Disney producer Don Hahn this week and managed to get a few bits of information out of him concerning Frankenweenie, Maleficent, Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2, and the 3D versions of Beauty & the Beast and The Lion King.

Hahn was at the time in London, checking out pre-production on Tim Burton’s 3D feature-length remake of his short film, Frankenweenie, which is set to begin filming at Three Mills Studios in the near future.

The producer admitted that he was pleased that Burton was “back to doing puppets,” which is a sentiment I share as well. The gothic auteur’s CGI-fests (see: Alice in Wonderland) generally seem to lack the kooky, creative zest of his most inspired works, like The Nightmare Before Christmas.

John August To Write Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’

It’s been confirmed that John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish) is going to write the screenplay for the upcoming Tim Burton produced Frankenweenie. The film is based on Burton’s 1984 live-action short film that he made while he was a film school student.

Surprisingly, this version will not be live-action but done in the Burton-favored style of stop-motion animation AND will be filmed in 3D. But what’s most surprising is that it will be in black and white, like the original.

A modern black and white, stop-motion, 3D film? Sounds interesting. In case you haven’t heard of Frankenweenie before, the basic plot is the story of a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.
