This weekend the box office took an upward turn, but like many school reports – it could have been better.

Immortals topped the box office with a weekend take of $32 million. It’s not a bad number, but not great if compared to the debuts of similarly themed films like 300 ($70 million) and Clash of the Titans ($60 million). Next weekend’s hold will be the real test, and there is a chance that this will hit $100 million domestic, but profit will probably be earned through foreign grosses. Immortals (read our review), directed by Tarsem Singh, stars new Superman Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke.

Adam Sandler’s latest comedy Jack and Jill opened at two. The $26 million gross is slightly lower than usual for a Sandler film, but his films routinely ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 13th, 2011

This week:

Puss in Boots steals the top spot from Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller; Harold and Kumar have a flat 3D debut and Paranormal Activity 3 continues to scare audiences.

Word of the week: Disappointment.

Puss in Boots led the way at the box office – beating the combined star wattage of Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. The animated film dropped just 10% from last week, grossing an impressive $33 million. The Shrek spin-off now has $76.6 million in the kitty, with more on the way as the holiday season approaches.

$24.6 million is quite a disappointment for director Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist, as the film was expected to steal the top spot. The Ben Stiller/Eddie Murphy film has had decent reviews (read ours), but it failed to connect with audiences. The heist caper ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 6th, 2011

This week:

Puss In Boots animates the box office as the Spanish voiced kitty tops the chart, Paranormal Activity 3 continues to scare audiences and Justin Timberlake’s In Time is out of luck.

Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend with an estimated $33 million take. The Antonio Banderas voiced ‘toon banked roughly 50% less than Shrek Forever After, which brought in $70 million worth of green on its debut last year. That film went on to gross over $258 million at the US box office and $752 million worldwide – pretty good considering that it was the second lowest grossing film in the series (the first film holds that honor).
This week:

Paranormal Activity 3 scares away the competition at the box office; it’s not all for one and one for all for The Three Musketeers - and Johnny English may be Reborn but he’s not topping the box office chart.

The Paranormal Activity franchise is the gift that keeps on giving to Paramount – the films are cheap to produce and they make back some serious coin. This latest installment is budgeted at $5 million, but it should gross over ten times that ($54 million) by Monday morning. The first Paranormal Activity cost just $15,000 (yeah – you read that right) and went on to score $107 million ($193 million globally) – while the sequel opened to $40 million on its way to $84 million ($177 million worldwide) from a $3 million budget.

This week:

Real Steel knocks out the competition to retain the top spot; Footloose shows fancy footwork to come a close second; The Thing leaves audiences cold and The Big Year is a huge disaster. It was a close call, but according to early estimates Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel held on to the top spot during a very weedy weekend. The robot boxing movie dipped around 40% for a weekend take of almost $16.3 million. That figure ups the gross to $51.7 million – a decent number, but not spectacular given the films $100 million-plus budget. It’ll struggle to get near the century mark on its domestic release, so it’ll need strong foreign grosses to be profitable.

Director Craig Brewer’s remake of the ’80s dance classic Footloose opens in theaters today (you can read our review of the film HERE as well our interview with Brewer HERE). Perhaps the most challenging role to cast for the remake was the one that catapulted Kevin Bacon into super-stardom – back when the original film was released.

The role of Ren Mccormack in Brewer’s re-imagining eventually went to Boston dancer Kenny Wormald. Wormald had been a back-up dancer for Justin Timberlake and when the casting directors for Footloose asked J.T. for a recommendation he immediately passed them on to Wormald.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Footloose

These days, there’s no shortage of ’80s remakes in Hollywood, but very few of these films succeed in recreating their respective campy premises while managing to keep a straight face. Plenty of remakes attempt to be “modern” or “gritty” but within the first five minutes of Craig Brewer’s Footloose, it’s apparent that the director isn’t simply aiming to cash in on Kevin Bacon’s iconic role as rebellious dancer hunk, Ren McCormack – he’s attempting to turn the campy premise inside out and present a film that offers more than just entertaining choreography and sexy scenery (though there is still an over-abundance of the the latter).

After all, there’s a pretty large range of material between ...

Click to continue reading ‘Footloose’ Review

We chat with 'Footloose' director Craig Brewer about remaking the '80s dance classic - revisiting the film as a grown-up as well as what he learned from J.J. Abrams.

This weekend the remake of the 1984 drama/dance-movie hybrid that propelled Kevin Bacon into super-stardom, Footloose, two-steps its way into theaters. Director Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan, Hustle and Flow) helmed the 2011 version — which strikes an unusual balance between updating the film and maintaining major elements of the original (including both the music and much of the dialogue).

For those who are unfamiliar with the town of Beaumont: Footloose tells the tale of city-kid Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) who is forced by circumstances to move to a tiny (in this version Southern) town that has responded to a shared tragedy by outlawing any activities they deem to be dangerous to their children, including (oh, yes) — dancing.

There are not a lot of titles to pick from this week, but this year’s mega-blockbuster Transformers: Dark of the Moon goes up against history’s blockbuster Ben Hur on DVD and Blu-ray.

Of course, with every new remake we seem to get a Blu-ray release of the original film. As the new Footloose approaches theaters in a few weeks, Paramount is bringing their dance classic to the small screen first.

In previous monster-related features on Screen Rant, we’ve noticed a huge passion for Gamera among our readers. Those same readers will be happy today as the trilogy hits Blu-ray in one set. All three Blu-rays are already available in some capacity, but now they can all be purchased together.

The following titles can be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

The second trailer for the 'Footloose' remake markets the film as a gritty and contemporary variation on the 1984 original but is the premise stretched too far for modern day believability?

Before we get to see what Dirty Dancing looks like in the 21st century, we’ll be treated to a modernized take on another dance-happy 1980s classic, Footloose – as filtered through the mind of co-writer and director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan).

Brewer’s plan has been to rework the famous fish-out-of-water tale as more of a gritty and hip modern-day yarn about a city boy butting heads with the authorities in a small southern town. Based on the second trailer for his Footloose remake, has Brewer delivered just that?

Well, he’s certainly got the “grittier” part down, adding more contemporary and “racy” clothing, music, and dancing to the mix – not to mention, more down n’ dirty street brawls and an explosive race between two graffiti-plastered buses (as opposed to ...

Click to continue reading ‘Footloose’ Trailer #2 Cuts Loose & Gets ‘Edgy’

A trailer has been released for Craig Brewer's 'Footloose' remake, which attempts to rework the 1984 original for a new generation. But will a more 'realistic' and 'hip' approach work?

Hollywood decided to begin plundering its vault of 1980s titles a couple years back, resulting in last year’s release of a successful Karate Kid remake and a moderately popular A-Team movie. Studios are hoping lightning will strike twice this year, with both this summer’s updated version of Fright Night – and this fall’s modernized take on Footloose.

A trailer has been released for the new Footloose, which was directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) and co-written by Dean Pitchford – the same fellow who scripted the original Kevin Bacon vehicle. But have the two successfully reworked the 1984 film for a new generation?

One thing Brewer and Pitchford have left unaltered is the basic premise of both the original Footloose movie and its 1998 stage musical adaptation: A big city boy has to handle some ...

Click to continue reading ‘Footloose’ Remake Trailer Is Like The Original, Only ‘Hip’ & ‘Gritty’

One way they build excitement for a film is by releasing still images, which usually consist of behind-the-scenes material, freeze frames from the movie (out of context of course) or occasionally a “cell phone reporter” will snap a picture or two while a film is shooting.
A lot of people see Saw; get ready to meet Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter; prepare for The Demonologists, Paul Haggis goes to prison; Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Frances O’Connor go hunting; Pete Segal has a Grudge, Daniel Craig’s Dream House is a nightmare; Kilmer and Coppola are Twixt Now and Sunrise and lots more.

The 3D horror sequel brought in an estimated $24.5 million to scare the beejeezus out of audiences- not bad for a film with a $20 million budget. While it’s not the best start for the franchise, it does beat the debut of last year’s installment. This might not be the last Saw after all.

The main cast of director Craig Brewer's remake of the 1984 film Footloose has been unveiled. Read on to learn who will fill Kevin Bacon's shoes.

Paramount has officially revealed the identities of the main cast members that will star in their remake of the 1980s flick Footloose, which is being written and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow).

A 26-year old Kevin Bacon starred in the original Footloose as a hip teenager from Chicago who butts heads with the local heads of his new home – an old-fashioned town out West, where dancing and rock music are outlawed. With the help of some admittedly impressive dance moves and now classic ’80s tunes like “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” and the title track, the young man sets out to fix this most unfathomable of problems.

Dancer/sort-of actor Kenny Wormald (from the MTV series Dancelife) will step into Bacon’s iconic role for the remake, while Miles Teller (wait, who?) will play a ...

Click to continue reading ‘Footloose’ Remake Cast Announced

According to Variety, Hustle and Flow director Craig Brewer has been confirmed as the director of the Footloose remake. Brewer, who also rewrote the script for the film, replaces veteran musical director Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), who dropped out of the project due to creative differences.

Right off the bat, Brewer needs to get to work casting the all-important lead role originally played by Kevin Bacon. The part was set to go to Zac Efron, but the actor dropped out over fear that he would be typecast in teen musicals (probably a good call). The next actor to take up the role was Chace Crawford, but he too was forced to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with the television show Gossip Girl.
