‘Fletch’ Reboot Gets a ‘Seinfeld’ Writer

A new Fletch film has been kicking around Hollywood for more than a decade and the project has been through several interesting permutations. It was initially conceived as a direct follow-up to the original Fletch and its sequel Fletch Lives – but after languishing in development hell for several years, the film was transformed into a prequel – so that a new actor could inherit the title role played so memorably by Chevy Chase in the previous installments.

Back in February, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the entire series of Fletch novels by Gregory McDonald and announced their plans to make “a smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies”. Who Should Play Irwin Fletcher in the Warner Bros. ‘Fletch’ Reboot?

In a disturbing Hollywood trend, Warner Bros. is now close to rebooting another great comedy from the 1980s.

Fletch still remains one of our favorite 80s comedies, but Warner Bros. wants to turn it into a “smart, action comedy that plays out on a much larger canvas.”

Having already starred in Vacation, Caddyshack and Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase was an established comedy star by the time Fletch released in 1985. While Fletch may have been based on an eleven book series, few would argue that Chevy Chase is the only reason for Fletch‘s iconic status in movies. Some would say Irwin Fletcher is an intriguing character, no matter who plays the part, but it is tough to imagine Fletch without Chevy Chase.

The box office is UP; Robert Downey Jr might still saddle up for Cowboys and Aliens; Lucy beats Nicole Kidman to the Punch; Natalie Portman, Danny McBride and James Franco salute Your Highness; Seann William Scott and Adam Brody are A Couple of Dicks and Chevy Chase dips his toes in the Hot Tub Time Machine and he may return as Fletch.

BOX OFFICE:
The summer season is now well and truly here. Pixar’s Up shows that family films and the Pixar brand are hugely profitable. The animated film banked a huge $68 million over the weekend. For a film that sells most of it’s tickets in half price matinees that’s a lot of attendance.

Last week’s champion Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian had to settle for the runner up spot with a weekend take of $25 million. With ...
