Uber-producer Neal Moritz has like a gazillion films in development (you can count them here). He’s been talking up a few of these potential films recently and he’s just spilled the beans on his take on Total Recall, Shane Black’s Doc Savage and a tinsy tiny bit of news on Flash Gordon.

Let’s start with Total Recall – which isn’t a film about the recent Japanese car scandal – Toyota Recall!

Kurt Wimmer is adapting Philip K. Dick’s story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale. In the film the main character Doug Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original film) won’t be going to Mars:

“You know, in the last movie he goes to Mars and we’re not doing that. We’re not going to go to Mars.”

Moritz also said that ...

Click to continue reading Neal Moritz Talks Total Recall, Doc Savage & Flash Gordon

While Breck Eisner has been out on the road promoting his horror remake The Crazies (see our review), the director (and son of Hollywood bigwig Michael Eisner) has been talking up his potential film version of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon.

Eisner spoke to Movieline about the forthcoming film and while he seems to think that it’ll be made, it does appear that the film is at least a few years away – that is, if Eisner stays at the helm.

When asked by the magazine about Flash Gordon Eisner said:

“Flash Gordon is a project I’ve been pursuing for years, it’s a real passion of mine. The writers have been breaking story the past couple of months, and we have a couple months to go until the draft goes into Sony. Assuming they achieve everything we talked about, I think it ...

Click to continue reading Breck Eisner Talks ‘Flash Gordon’

Sam Worthington’s named popped up yet again for the starring role in another major film project but unsurpringly, he has denied the rumor himself in an e-mail to Harry at Ain’t It Cool News.

As mentioned in our discussion of the Sam Worthington/Ryan Reynolds rumor for the lead role of the Flash Gordon remake, it doesn’t mean much to see Sam or Ryan’s names mentioned for a role like this as they will be listed as candidates for every major leading role.

This particular part however, like the Captain America rumors, had some displeased at the idea of having non-American actors playing iconic American characters. To me, that’s not too much of a big deal and getting an actor who can look and play the part the best is of most importance, no matter ...

Click to continue reading Sam Worthington Squashes Flash Gordon Rumor

News on a new Flash Gordon movie has been scarce and we’ve not heard of any official developments since nearly a year and a half ago when Neil Moritz acquired the rights to the film and Breck Eisner was picked to direct. That changes this week as rumors surface of who is being looked at to play the lead role. Hollyscoop is reporting that an insider of theirs informed them that Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are up for the role of Flash against two others.

For those unfamiliar with the classic sci-fi tale, the story of Flash Gordon takes place when our planet is hit with a meteor strike. We find out through the story that these meteors are weapons from the planet Mongo sent by Ming the Merciless, their evil ruler. Flash Gordon and ...

Click to continue reading Sam Worthington vs. Ryan Reynolds for Flash Gordon?

Welcome to another fun filled installment of Screen Rant‘s Weekend Movie News Wrap Up.

This week:

We see who is penning Flash Gordon, we learn some details about Alex Proyas’ Dracula Year Zero, discover what David Goyer is working on, Channing Tatum lines up something for after GI Joe and The Conversation goes to television.

1. The Flash Gordon Remake/ adaptation has now grabbed Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script. The Neil Moritiz produced, Breck Eisner (Sahara) directed film is in production at Columbia.

I just hope the film is more like the 1980′s movie and less like the Si-Fi channel show.

Source: Hollywood Reporter

2. Speaking of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, their script for Dracula Year Zero is to be directed by Robot and Dark City director Alex Proyas. Proyas recently gave some details about the Dracula prequel/origin story:

“You could see it as a prequel ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 10, 2008

Flash Gordon is back where he belongs – at the cinema. I’m a big Flash Gordon fan. Well not that big (about 5’9″), but I am a fan of the character – be it the old serials or the Mike Hodges camp epic from 1980.

Let’s just skip over the recent Sci-Fi channel series that should have taken Flash back to his roots – I don’t even want to go there.

Neil Moritz, producer of XXX, The Fast and the Furious and Stealth has acquired the rights with the help of Sony – and Sahara director Breck Eisner will take the reins of this Sci-Fi film that could be a franchise starter.

Who would make a good Flash?

I’d call Matthew McConaughey.

After all he is an “All-American” actor and he has blond hair – a ...

Click to continue reading Flash Gordon’s Alive… On The Big Screen!

Last Friday night, I revisited Sci-Fi channel’s Flash Gordon to give it another look see since this show gave the Sci-Fi Channel’s best ever series premiere.

I don’t know if they were trying too hard to cram a lot of development information into that first episode, or now there are different writers or editors for the regular episodes, but to my surprise, last nights episode was much better than the premiere.

I didn’t expect the transporting back and forth between Earth and Mongo to be handled well, but it flowed better than I thought. Have I been softened up by Stargate to accept teleport or wormhole windows as the standard for interplanetary travel? I’ll never say.

I just sat through 90 minutes of Sci Fi Channel’s new contribution to their line up, Flash Gordon, an original Sci Fi series. Their splash site says “The new Flash Gordon follows Flash (Eric Johnson) and his companions, Dale Arden (Gina Holden) and Dr. Hans Zarkov (Jody Racicot) through wild and momentous adventures.”

http://www.scifi.com/flashgordon/about/

Though the pilot episode was 90 minutes long, we were rushed through character development in the show. They threw the characters at us, and telling us so much about them rather than just letting a developing storyline do the job.

In this pilot episode, Flash discovers the truth about his fathers work and his “death”, meets and defeats an alien* on earth, teleports to Mongo, gets captured & tortured by Ming, escapes back to Earth, defeats Ming’s daughter on Earth and she escapes back ...

Click to continue reading Review: Flash Gordon On Sci Fi
