James Cameron Offers ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Update

20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Voyage remake appeared to have lost yet another director a couple months back, when currently-attached helmer Shawn Levy signed on for a new film adaptation of Frankenstein. However, while the latter project is reportedly moving ahead full steam, Levy remains set to call the shots on the former (ie. producer James Cameron’s latest 3D project).

Cameron opened up recently about the status of the Fantastic Voyage reworking, providing both an update on the status of the project – and revealing that certain aspects of the plot will differ significantly from its 1966 predecessor.

Shawn Levy Set To Direct The ‘Frankenstein’ Retelling

Word got out just a week ago that director Shawn Levy was eying 20th Century Fox’s new Frankenstein project, with the intention of making it (not the Fantastic Voyage remake) his followup to this fall’s boxing robots flick, Real Steel.

Reports are in that Levy has actually signed on for the flick, which will be fast-tracked for development – in order to beat out the half-dozen other Frankenstein-oriented movies currently in the works.

Variety says that Levy is set to take on Fox’s Frankenstein retelling, thereby besting other candidates like Harry Potter franchise helmer David Yates and Paul Greengrass – who, as coincidence would have it, was briefly attached to direct the Fantastic Voyage remake before he moved on and Levy was hired for the job.

Things may change drastically for producer James Cameron’s Fantastic Voyage remake soon, as the expensive sci-fi venture could be without either a director or star attached in the near future.

Shawn Levy remains onboard to helm the flick for the time being, but word is that he may pass on the project if he’s unable to convince an A-lister to sign on over the upcoming weeks.

THR has learned that Levy has set up a meeting with Will Smith, but is prepped to move ahead with other films if the blockbuster actor doesn’t agree to headline Fantastic Voyage. Hugh Jackman Wanted For ‘Fantastic Voyage’

20th Century Fox and James Cameron eyed numerous filmmakers to helm their upcoming 3D remake of the classic sci-fi adventure Fantastic Voyage, and ultimately selected Shawn Levy for the job. As it were, Levy is now eying a noteworthy actor to headline his new project – none other than his Real Steel leading man, Hugh Jackman.

The new Fantastic Voyage could potentially end up being the fourth collaboration between Levy and Jackman after this fall’s Real Steel, the pair’s upcoming untitled action-adventure pic, and a planned Real Steel sequel. Clearly these two gentlemen have established an excellent working relationship.

Shawn Levy Set To Direct ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Remake

James Cameron has been searching for a filmmaker to helm his latest 3D cinematic expedition into an exotic world, a remake of the 1966 sci-fi venture Fantastic Voyage, and has at last found his man in the form of Night at the Museum and Real Steel director, Shawn Levy.

Levy has been recruited by 20th Century Fox and Cameron to direct the motion picture – a project that will require copious amounts of CGI to realize its extravagant setting: the interior of a human body.

Deadline has confirmed that Levy is onboard for its new-and-improved Fantastic Voyage, which Louis Leterrier was previously in contention to direct. James Cameron Wants Louis Leterrier For ‘Fantastic Voyage’

James Cameron won’t direct the microscopic sci-fi adventure, Fantastic Voyage, but he is producing the project and reportedly wants Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans) onboard to direct.

Paul Greengrass passed on directing Fantastic Voyage earlier this year and left the door open for another filmmaker to tackle the project, which revolves around a group of scientists who shrink themselves in order to enter the body of an injured man and (hopefully) prevent him from dying.

Darren Aronofsky met with Cameron to discuss possibly directing Fantastic Voyage, but is now signed on for Wolverine 2 instead. Greengrass Dumps Fantastic Voyage For Treasure Island?

At the beginning of last month we reported on the news that Paul Greengrass was in early talks to helm a big-budget remake of the sci-fi classic, Fantastic Voyage. The film is being produced by James Cameron, written by Shane Salerno (AVP 2) and surprise surprise (sarcasm alert!) is being done in 3D.

At the time Greengrass’ attachment seemed strange as even with his action movie resume – The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and the recent Green Zone – directing Fantastic Voyage would be a departure from the director’s usual intimate, up-close-and-personal style of filmmaking.

It looks director Paul Greengrass may be making his first voyage into the world of the epic and fantastical with a 3D remake of the 1966 classic sci-fi adventure, Fantastic Voyage.

The film was about a team of people who get miniaturized and injected into the bloodstream of a dying scientist in order to save his life.

Last December we reported on what Avatar director, James Cameron would be moving onto after he finished with the blue Na’Vi of the world of Pandora. At first it was reported he was working with script writer Shane Salerno (AVP 2 – ouch!) on a sci-fi film described as an “event set in the future.” That project was then revealed to be the remake of Fantastic Voyage.

Roland Emmerich, the hit or miss director that has done such films as the original and excellent Stargate, the fun popcorn flick Independence Day, the embarrassingly awful Godzilla and the very lame The Day After Tomorrow will be helming a remake of the 1960′s Sci Fi movie Fantastic Voyage.

For those of you too young to remember it and who haven’t caught it on TV, Fantastic Voyage revolves around a diplomat who suffers an assassination attempt. To save him, a submarine is shrunken to microscopic size and injected into his bloodstream with a small crew. Not only is the crew racing the clock to save his life, but they also encounter unexpected resistance from the body’s natural defenses, which treat the micro-sub as an invading virus.
