‘Evil Dead’ Remake Production Update

Many Evil Dead fans (as they’ll be happy to attest) were perfectly content to let the remake stay dead in the water. However, over the past year, the project managed to come together under the guiding hand(s) of franchise staples Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, who are producing this new take on their breakout cult 1981 horror collaboration.

Fede Alvarez (the short film “Panic Attack!”) has officially commenced with principal photography on the Evil Dead remake, according to a new press release from SPWA/Film District. The estimated $14 million shoot will take place in New Zealand and is expected to wrap up by the beginning of July (about two months, from the time of writing this).

‘Evil Dead’ Remake: Casting Update & First Set Photo [Updated]

A Sam Raimi-approved Evil Dead remake is coming, whether fans like it or not. This particular recycling of a beloved cult classic is very much embracing Hollywood’s “darker and grittier” remake creed, by abandoning the mix of over-the-top gore and Three Stooges-style comedy from Raimi’s original film(s), in favor of a dead-serious supernatural horror flick, with Ichi the Killer levels of violence.

Today, we have news about the film’s male lead role (who is not Ash) being filled, along with a “set photo” released by the new Evil Dead‘s director, Fede Alvarez, which shows off “the path to hell” in the movie.

Lily Collins Departs ‘Evil Dead’; Javier Bardem Leaves ‘Despicable Me 2′

Today (for a change) we have a casting update concerning two different people who will NOT be involved with a pair of upcoming films, which occupy completely different ends of the entertainment spectrum: the “unbelievably violent” Evil Dead remake and the kid-friendly 3D toon, Despicable Me 2.

Previously, Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) was onboard to lend his vocals to the baddie in the Despicable Me sequel, but he has parted ways with the Illumination Entertainment production. Similarly, Lily Collins (this spring’s Mirror Mirror) won’t be portraying a young drug-addicted woman who ends up having to face off against some literal personal demons in the Evil Dead revamping.

Lily Collins Cast as Drug Addict in ‘Evil Dead’ Remake

Like a giant, flaming meteor in the night, the Evil Dead remake is hurtling toward us – or, rather, toward production – at a fairly rapid rate. The director, Fede Alvarez, has been chosen. The screenplay, by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with revisions by Diablo Cody), is finished. And now, the first major player has been cast.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror) has been tapped for the role of Mia, the drug addict and impetus for why a bunch of college kids decide to go to a creepy cabin in the woods in this 2013 remake.

‘Evil Dead’ Remake Plot Details Tease A ‘Shining’ Style Horror Movie [UPDATED]

[UPDATE: Sony has set an official release date for the Evil Dead remake.]

Virtually every one of the previously-released reports concerning the remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-classic horror flick, The Evil Dead, has been focused on how the project differs from its predecessor (with the notable exception of Raimi himself serving as producer of the remake).

Noteworthy changes between the old and new Evil Dead include a drug addiction subplot, no Ash (or Ash-like) character, and an absence of the twisted humor that pervaded Raimi’s original ultra-low-budget film. Co-writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) has likewise emphasized that the remake is not only extremely violent, but also grounded in reality… at least, as grounded as a movie that involve a Necronomicon and rape-happy trees can be.

Diablo Cody: ‘Evil Dead’ Remake is ‘Grounded in Reality’ & ‘Unbelievably Violent’

Whether we like it or not, the Evil Dead remake is coming down the pike, courtesy of director Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack!) and writer Diablo Cody (Juno). Will this be one of the few horror remakes to actually end up being good? One can only hope.

Cody (who wrote the script for the upcoming movie Young Adult) has been talking about the Evil Dead remake, describing this version of the classic film series as reality-grounded. She also said she wouldn’t have gotten involved if original creators Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell hadn’t been involved. Check it out what she had to say, below.

This week in DVD and Blu-ray releases is void of any big players, but does provide a few new options for those in search for home entertainment. If you missed it on Friday, you can now pick up the final chapter in the Harry Potter franchise. That should hold you down if this week’s choices do not.

A pair of films that straddle the line between indie and mainstream make their way home with Larry Crowne and Beginners. Bellflower, a seriously indie film that earned some cult followers, is also available.

Classic cartoons are coming back strong on Blu-ray, with this week’s release of Looney Tunes: Volume One only one week after Tom & Jerry got the Blu-ray upgrade.

While the Evil Dead remake has technically been in the works for over six years, it was only in July that the film got a director – Fede Alvarez – a screenwriter – Diablo Cody (Juno) – and a very tentative release date of October 2012.

Now, we have an official plot synopsis as well as some very revealing details about the impetus of the plot.

Sometimes it’s hard to get behind remakes, especially when the film being remade is a cult-classic like Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead. That’s why its so reassuring to hear Evil Dead star (and fanboy icon) Bruce Campbell give the film his blessing.

There are already a few things working in the Evil Dead remake’s favor, including an intriguing young director in Fede Alvarez, a fresh script with tweaks by Diablo Cody, and a cameo from Bruce Campbell himself. During a special cast reunion panel at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Convention, Campbell shared some more reasons why fans should be excited for the remake.

The Evil Dead series is, somewhat oxymoronically, one of the most popular cult horror series of all time. In fact, there are so many different DVD editions at this point, one can barely contain them on his or her shelf.

Which is why fans of the series are a little reticent to be overjoyed about the prospect of a remake. Evil Dead and its sequels are the stuff of cult film legend. For years, die-hard fans have been yearning and begging for an Evil Dead 4 directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell as Ashley J. Williams, but as the years roll on, it just seems more and more unlikely.

Bruce Campbell Wants to Make Horror Movie ‘Expendables’

Despite less-than-stellar reviews and a fairly minimal budget, The Expendables has been wildly successful since its theatrical release last month. The concept of riffing on the action movie genre by casting every action hero in existence from the 1980s and 90s—save the ones who refused to join—clearly struck a much-neglected chord with people.

Apparently, it struck a chord with cult film legend Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) as well. DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: August 31st, 2010

It’s a great day to be a home video fan. Seven movies worthy of your hard-earned cash hit the shelves as either new releases or Blu-ray re-releases. Of course, wherever greatness comes our way, slop like Marmaduke settles in as well.

But disregard the horrible titles and focus on the classics like The Evil Dead or Bad Lieutenant. Even The Blair Witch Project is making a triumphant return in the Blu-ray format. And for those in need of a giant shark not named MegaShark, you can now watch Samuel L. Jackson’s now-classic death in Deep Blue Sea in Blu-ray glory.

This week’s releases are further proof that great movies are becoming a rarity these days. Two of the three new releases are almost too embarrassing to acknowledge.

There is a long list of awesome weapons in film history, and it’s about time we narrow it down to the top 25 (in our all-knowing, unerring opinion).

The inception of this list came while watching Iron Man and the scene where Tony Stark presented the amazingly destructive Jericho Missile. Then again, maybe it truly began when I bought a replica Hattori Hanzo sword at C2E2 a month ago. Either way, we’ve all been fascinated by the technology filmmakers come up with, and weapons tend to be at the top of amazing innovations that catch the filmgoer’s eye.

Comic-Con ’08: Day 4 Wrap Up

Another day at Comic-Con, another sore rear end from the uncomfortable seats in Hall H…

Today’s events included watching the Season 3 premiere episode of Heroes, which was a huge unexpected bonus. It looks like the show is getting its mojo back and if you’re a fan you’re really going to like it when it returns this Fall.

The Lost panel was attended by the executive producers (who revealed next to nothing) and Matthew Fox (who said almost nothing). They did manage to entertain the crowd, but overall it was cotton candy: a lot of fluff but not very nourishing.

Sam Raimi doesn’t have to work on anything at all if he doesn’t want to, but his options are wide open. Following the success of his Spider-Man films the red carpet now belongs to him. He’s kicking back and pondering quite a few projects right now, including the possibility of Spider-Man 4. From the sound of it, he (and Marvel and the studio) realize that they need to do something very different with the next Spider-Man film considering the reaction of moviegoers to the weirdness that was Spider-Man 3.

If you are a fan of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movies, you’d better satisfy yourself with the multiple DVD versions of the original two movies because Evil Dead IV isn’t coming any time soon.

Over at IESB there’s a video interview with Bruce Campbell in which he stated that Sam Raimi is extremely busy with the Spiderman franchise and who knows when he’d have the time or inclination to do Evil Dead IV.

And in case you think he was just being coy for the interview, I have independent verification of this from a source who spoke with Tom Sullivan. Tom did special effects work on Evil Dead I, II and Army of Darkness and is a friend of Bruce.

In an interview with SciFi.com, Rober Tapert discussed the upcoming remake of the cult classic Evil Dead. It seems that he and Bruce Campbell were quite reluctant to go forward with the remake concept, both being very sensitive to the fans of the original film(s). Sam Raimi however (who directed the original version) has been wanting to move forward with the project in order to get a fresh take on it by some new director.

The good news is that Tapert and Raimi are producing the new version and they are both good friends with Campbell, who is very connected to the fan base and cares greatly about the original, which launched his career.
