It’s challenging for any actor to take on a role that people have come to associate so closely with the actor who portrayed it originally.

But Jeremy Renner is no stranger to challenges.

Bloody Disguising reports that the Hurt Locker star may just be planning to take on Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken in the remake of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York.

Kurt Russell owned the role, and it will be difficult not to think of him while watching any re-imagined version. With Breck Eisner’s successful remake of The Crazies under his belt, he’s moving on to slightly more revered territory – an updated version of John Carpenter’s classic, Escape From New York. In an interview with MovieHole, Eisner recognizes how crucial the casting of Snake Plissken is and reveals that Timothy Olyphant (Justified) would be at the top of his list of contenders:

Creatively, he would be great for it. We have not yet discussed internally within the studio who will play Snake Plissken. There are many factors that go into those discussions. Crazies Director Could Helm Escape from New York Remake

Breck Eisner has become the latest director attached to the long-planned – yet long-panned – remake of John Carpenter’s futuristic cult classic, Escape from New York.

EW reports that, fresh from helming a mildly successful 2010 adaptation of the George A. Romero horror The Crazies, Eisner is in negotiations with New Line Cinema to breathe new life into legendary tough guy, Snake Plissken.

Eisner, who was also responsible for the big screen version of the Clive Cussler novel Sahara starring Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn and Penelope Cruz, follows Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner and Jonathan Mostow as the men most likely to direct the Escape from New York remake.

I don’t know if horror writer/director icon John Carpenter should be flattered or upset because most of his classic cult films are being remade, some for the good (Assault on Precinct 13) and some for the bad (The Fog, Halloween). A look at his IMDB page shows a reference to a They Live remake due out in 2011 but there hasn’t been any news on that for a few months.

A couple of days ago the news dropped that his cult classic Kurt Russell horror film The Thing was getting a prequel and now we find out that his other Russell movie Escape from New York is going to be remade.

Escape From New York Remake News Keeps Getting Worse

Put this on the list of movies that don’t need to be remade, revisited, re-imagined or whatever the latest politically correct term is for a non-original movie production: John Carpenter’s Escape From New York.

Beyond the fact that I don’t think this movie needs to be remade we have this: First came the news a couple of days ago that Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) who this past August was confirmed as the director for the film was now off the project. His supposed replacement? Brett Ratner.

Ratner is most well known for his Rush Hour movies, which according to Rotten Tomatoes started out not so great with each subsequent one getting worse. He’s also the guy who stepped in at the eleventh hour to direct X-Men 3, the weakest film in the trilogy.

A guy just can’t take a vacation around here… leave for a few days and ya miss a boatload of movie news. So here’s a quick summary of a few items worth noting:

- Yahoo! Movies has a trailer up for Slipstream, a time travel movie directed by and starring Anthony Hopkins. It looks interesting but I’ll be damned if I can tell what the story is from the trailer. Maybe that’s the point…

- It seems that Brett Ratner will be directing the remake of Escape from New York. Uh oh.

- Vin Diesel as the Terminator directed by McG? I suppose that half of that is good news… And sorry, I just wasn’t in the mood to do one of those half Terminator/half Vin Diesel photoshop jobs that everyone else has attached to this story.

Len Wiseman Confirmed As Escape From New York Director

It is being reported over at The Hollywood Reporter that Len Wiseman has been confirmed to be in the director’s chair for the remake of the cult favorite Escape from New York. I like this choice. I enjoyed his Underworld films (that may have had a lot to do with Kate Beckinsale and her wardrobe choices) and Vic gave Die Hard 4.0 a favorable review here.

As a fan, I am of two minds on the idea of one of my favorite movies getting redone.

In my heart, Kurt Russell forever wears an eye-patch, mullet, and multiple days growth of a beard. I have always hoped they would do the rumored Escape from Earth storyline with Kurt in his signature role. That being said, if they have to recast the role of Snake Plissken, Gerard Butler ...
