Sci-fi is having a pretty good year at the movies, and that trend is only going to continue into the future. Today we have some new images from what is arguably the flagship sci-fi film for 2012: Ridley Scott’s Alien spinoff film, Prometheus; we also have some new images that the cast and crew of the Ender’s Game movie have been sending out to the Interwebs; finally, we get a look at those aliens no one asked for, in a clip from the blockbuster “adaptation” of the board game Battleship.

‘Ender’s Game’ Moves to Holiday Friendly November 2013

Landing the right release date can mean everything for a film’s box office success, and for Summit Entertainment, they will be making a slight change to one of their upcoming tentpole films which is moving from a spring 2013 date to a November 2013 release.

Ender’s Game will be now released in the more holiday-friendly release of November 1st, 2013. Other films that will be compete against Ender’s Game are Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi pic Singularity and DreamWorks Animation’s Me and My Shadow opening a week later (followed by Thor 2 and The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire).

Rescheduling dates in this instance, is not a cause for concern nor does it signal the quality of the movie. At this point it’s way to early to determine that. The new release date ...

New ‘Ender’s Game’ Set Photo & ‘The Host’ Image

Writer/director Gavin Hood just recently commenced with production on his adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s beloved sci-fi novel, Ender’s Game, and we now have photographic proof that… well, at least the entrance to the set for the film’s zero-gravity Battle Room has been built.

By comparison, we already have a teaser trailer for Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s sci-fi book, The Host – which also began lensing just a while ago – and, today, we can add yet another still frame featuring starlet Saoirse Ronan to the small pile of released marketing material.

‘Ender’s Game’ Casts Three More Adult Players

After more than a decade’s worth of stunted starts and partial collapses, a cinematic adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s decorated sci-fi novel, Ender’s Game is finally ready to begin production. Cameras will start rolling on the project this month in Louisiana, with Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) directing an overall admirable cast and working from his own adapted screenplay.

The (presumably) last major casting update for Ender’s Game has been announced, revealing that lesser-knowns Stevie Ray Dallimore (Far from Heaven, The Messenger) and Andrea Powell (The Gates, the upcoming Breaking Dawn – Part 2) have been cast as the title character’s parents. Meanwhile, increasingly-popular character actor Nonso Anozie has signed for a more significant part in the film.

‘The Help’s’ Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer Join ‘Ender’s Game’ & ‘Snow Piercer’

Both Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are strong contenders in this year’s Oscar’s race, having been nominated for their respective roles in Best Picture candidate The Help. The decorated acting duo aren’t resting on their laurels, either, and have already lined up new parts in several promising titles on the horizon – including the Ender’s Game adaptation and The Host director Joon-ho Bong’s English-language directorial debut, Snow Piercer.

Davis is slated to begin work on the long-gestating adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s first Ender book, followed by a part in another novel-based project titled Beautiful Creatures. Spencer, meanwhile, will first appear in Diablo Cody’s untitled directorial debut (formerly known as Lamb of God) before turning her attention to Snow Piercer.

Harrison Ford & Abigail Breslin Join ‘Ender’s Game’

Ender’s Game casting news continues to filter out, and today we get some of the biggest news yet. Harrison Ford, long sought to join Gavin Hood’s (Wolverine) sci-fi epic, based on Orson Scott Card’s series of novels of the same name, has officially signed on, and Abigail Breslin (New Year’s Eve) will also join the cast as Valentine Wiggin, the titular protagonist’s older sister.

The Hugo and Nebula Award winning YA novels tell the story of an Earth that has been united after being attacked by an alien race. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), is a child genius and one of many child soldiers in training, who must save the world from the malevolent aliens dubbed “buggers”.

‘Ender’s Game’ Adds Another Young Actor

The Hunger Games movie may be making all the headlines these days, but another popular YA series turned movie tentpole, Ender’s Game, is slowly making a splash of its own.

The Gavin Hood-directed feature is based on the first in a series of books by Hugo and Nebula Award-winning writer, Orson Scott Card. The books feature a dystopian future in which the Earth has suffered multiple attacks from an alien race. As a result, adults begin to teach kids to fight off the aliens at an elite training academy.

Reports state that Canadian teen star Brendan Meyer has joined Ender’s Game. He joins Hugo‘s Asa Butterfield who stars as Ener Wiggin, and Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit). Sir Ben Kingsley is also rumored to co-star in an unspecified role.

Ben Kingsley In Talks To Join ‘Ender’s Game’

Production on writer/director Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game movie is slated to begin by February 2012; hence why casting for the sci-fi literary adaptation is fully under-way, with Asa Butterfield having already snagged the lead role, Hailee Steinfeld on the verge of securing a pivotal part, and well-renowned veteran stars like Harrison Ford being eyed to portray one of the film’s important (adult) supporting characters.

Reports are in that a different important grown-up (side) role in Ender’s Game may have been filled, by none-other than Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley – who, as it were, appeared onscreen most recently alongside Butterfield in Martin Scorsese’s 3D flick, Hugo.

‘True Grit’s’ Hailee Steinfeld In Talks To Join ‘Ender’s Game’

Following her Academy Award-nominated turn as Mattie Ross in the Coen Brothers’ True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld was favored by many fans to portray Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games. While that casting didn’t come to fruition, it looks like the teen actress could portray the female lead in another noteworthy sci-fi literary adaptation: writer/director Gavin Hood’s cinematic take on Orson Scott Card’s popular novel, Ender’s Game.

Steinfeld has reportedly begun negotiations to sign on for Ender’s Game, which just recently secured Asa Butterfield (Hugo) to portray its young protagonist. The search is currently on to also fill one of the movie’s pivotal adult roles, with Harrison Ford rumored to be the filmmakers’ top choice.

The cinematic adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s award-winning 1985 sci-fi novel, Ender’s Game, is at last coming together. Now that Summit has officially settled on a release date for the long-in-development cinematic adaptation of the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning sci-fi novel, Ender’s Game, the search is on for an adolescent actor to portray the film’s brilliant (but dangerous) eponymous character: Andrew “Ender” Wiggin.

Several underage actors have reportedly met with the project’s writer/director, Gavin Hood. However, one thespian is already being touted as having all-but-secured the lead role.

Summit Entertainment has revealed new theatrical release dates and loglines for several noteworthy upcoming projects.

Those titles include: writer/director Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game adaptation, the currently-directorless action-comedy sequel RED 2, Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies film adaptation, Louis Leterrier’s heist thriller Now You See Me, and Scott Derrickson’s low-budget horror flick Sinister.

One of these pics – The Cabin in the Woods – has been collecting dust after being shelved as a result of MGM’s bankruptcy, while the other – an Ender’s Game film adaptation – looks to at last become a reality after years of rumor mongering.

‘Ender’s Game’ Talk From Roberto Orci

The seemingly ubiquitous sci-fi writing duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were busy promoting Cowboys and Aliens at WonderCon this past weekend. That didn’t stop the pair (or at least Orci) from talking a bit about one of their more anticipated projects currently in development: an adaptation of Ender’s Game, scripted by Wolverine helmer Gavin Hood.

Kurtzman and Orci became associated with the project when they began shopping Hood’s screenplay around a few months back. Given the (put simply) difficult subject matter of Orson Scott Card’s original source material, it’s not too surprising that an Ender’s Game movie has been slow to develop.

It’s time for another Mid-Week Movie News Wrap Up.

In this week’s installment:

There’s half the blood in The Half Blooded Prince; The Mutant Chronicles finally sees the darkened theater; Mangold gets romantic with Juliet; Ender’s Game comes to the end of the road; nobody does it better than Quantum of Solace.

1. Harry Potter fans may be worried to discover that Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince has been given a PG rating by the MPAA. This rating is due to “scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality.”

Considering that the Potter books get darker (and thicker) this comes as a bit of a surprise. Could the MPAA be getting softer or have large chunks of the novel been ignored?
