The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

Memories of cinematic dreck released in 2010 lingers on in our collective consciousness, even with the promise of more disappointing sequels and undesired franchise rejuvenation (see – the Lethal Weapon reboot) to arrive in the future. Enter the diabolical minds behind the Razzie Awards.

Nominees for the 31st Annual Razzie Awards have been announced and M. Night Shyamalan’s much-derided TV show adaptation, The Last Airbender, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse are the leaders in the contest to be officially ordained the “best of the worst” in 2010.

Worst Picture nods were handed out to both Shyamalan’s Last Airbender – which our own Rob Keyes described as “a poorly constructed film with no sense of plot, character or emotion” – and the third Twilight film.
As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Following the Oscars deeming the scores for Black Swan, True Grit and The Fighter ineligible for ...

Click to continue reading Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

'Inception' and two of the highest-grossing movies of 2010 hit DVD and Blu-ray this week alongside some cult-classics from revered filmmakers.

As the summer hits continue to make their way onto DVD and Blu-ray, this week’s releases present some of the biggest movies of 2010. Over $2.5 billion of this year’s worldwide box office is accounted for in the three movies hitting shelves this week – Inception, Twilight: Eclipse and Shrek Forever After.

Ironically, the three Blu-ray re-releases this week were low-budget films that gained traction with dedicated fans. Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation actually made $119 million on only a $4 million budget. Technically, that makes it the most profitable movie of the week.

Sony has also revamped a collection of previously released Blu-rays. Essentially, this is a mass re-release of BDs currently out of circulation and many include extra special features. The films include Closer, The Big Hit, About Last Night…, The Deep, St. Elmo’s Fire ...

Click to continue reading DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: December 7th, 2010

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this year’s ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is going to Japan and while he doesn’t need his memory to earn a new love interest and some enemies, he does need a new director. Through interviews after the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s been clear that Gavin Hood would not be back to direct the sequel – perhaps a result of the poor critical response to the film.

While there was talk of Bryan Singer possibly taking the director’s chair, he was instead given the chance to helm the X-Men prequel, First Class, until scheduling issues caused him to step out and into the producer role. So who then could we see join Twentieth Century Fox to direct Wolverine 2?

Despicable Me was the box office champ over the weekend. The Steve Carell voiced 3D toon should gross an impressive $58 million by Monday morning. In addition to Carell the film also stars the vocal talents of Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristin Wiig, and Men In Black 3 villain Jemaine Clement.

It wasn’t surprising that the Twilight Saga: Eclipse er…. eclipsed every other film at the box office over the fourth of July weekend. The vampire film banked a mighty $161 million since it opened last week. With a budget of under $70 million this is yet another profitable film in Summit’s mighty franchise. The film has now grossed over $260 million worldwide – how much of this was due to Taylor Lautner’s six pack or Robert Pattinson’s hair? You tell me?

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was second. The cartoon adaptation has been a surprise success and has now scored just under $60 million since its debut.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse set a box office record for the biggest midnight opening. The third film in the Twilight franchise has already netted over $68 million.

Twilight: Eclipse bested its predecessor The Twilight Saga: New Moon to break the all-time record for biggest midnight box office reception in history. According to Variety, Eclipse earned a stunning $30 million from its midnight showings, which took place on 4,000 screens nationwide. By comparison, New Moon opened to $26.3 million during its midnight showing.

By now, it should be no surprise that Twilight can bring in the big bucks. Still, $30 million in one night is an impressive haul.

Besides its mega numbers on regular screens, Eclipse also set a midnight box office record for IMAX, earning over $1 million across 192 IMAX showings. There’s no reason to expect that the Twilight train will run out of steam anytime soon, either.

Theaters around the U.S. will be jam-packed with diehard Twilight lovers next Wednesday at midnight, when Eclipse makes its way into theaters. It’s been less than eight months since Bella, Edward, and Jacob last graced the big screen in New Moon, but fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to see the gloomy trio’s love triangle become all the more complicated by an impending battle between the werewolves and vampires.

Hopefully, director David Slade (30 Days of Night) will deliver the goods – lest he find himself being hunted down by a vengeful mob of Twilight types, armed with pitchforks and torches.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will continue to develop the love triangle between gloomy teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), broody 100 + year old vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson), and noble but hairy werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) that was set in motion during the previous Twilight flick, New Moon.

As always, this year’s MTV Movie Awards was two things: eye-rolling because of its results and entertaining in its own right.

We all know the awards themselves mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things (they might as well call it “The Twilight Awards”) but for the most part the show manages to be at least fun to watch (often that’s more than can be said for the Oscars).

In case you happened to miss the 2010 MTV Movie Awards don’t worry, as Screen Rant has you covered. We have here all the results from the awards, as well as four new clips for some pretty huge movies that are going to screens this year: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Last Airbender and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

The deafening roar of Twilight lovers around the country celebrating the midnight premiere of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at the end of this month will surely leave us all quivering in our boots.

In the meantime, Team Edward/Jacob fans can entertain themselves by watching two new TV spots for Eclipse and a featurette on one of the film’s new vampire characters.

Bella (Kristen Stewart) has a lot on her mind in the latest chapter in the Twilight series. She not only has to choose between studly Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and pallid Edward (Robert Pattinson), thwart a vengeance plot orchestrated by the evil vampire, Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) but she also faces – gasp! – her impending graduation from high school.

Honestly, I recall having a pretty severe case of Senioritis back when I was Bella’s age, and that’s ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Eclipse’ TV Spots, Featurette

Tom Cruise returns to his Tropic Thunder role as manic Hollywood executive Les Grossman for a series of MTV Movie Awards promos. Watch as Les gives advice to the stars of Twilight.

Last week, MTV released two new promos for this year’s MTV Movie Awards featuring Tom Cruise’s popular character, Les Grossman, from the 2008 Ben Stiller blockbuster Tropic Thunder. In the promos, Grossman, whose profanity-laced outbursts were one of the best parts of Tropic Thunder, offers hilariously questionable advice (and abuse) to the stars of the Twilight franchise, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

It’s nice to see Tom Cruise back in character for these MTV promos. When you talk about Tropic Thunder, the conversation almost always centers around his performance and Robert Downey Jr.’s, and rightfully so. That film single-handedly reminded the world just how awesome Tom Cruise can be when he’s not busy jumping on Oprah’s couch or criticizing psychotherapy on national news programs.

Adding to the recent clips and posters we posted for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, we have a brand new TV spot for the movie which you can check out below.

Eclipse reunites stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattison and Taylor Lautner, but this time things look to be more action-packed as the vampires and werewolves battle it out. Here’s the official synopsis:

Bella (Stewart) once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward (Pattinson) and her friendship with Jacob (Lautner) — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Eclipse’ TV Spot

Select movie theaters are giving die-hard Twilight fans a treat - a special screening of the first two films prior to midnight showings of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Movie theater ticket prices may be on the rise, but Twilight fans will get the ultimate bang for their buck. AMC Theaters will present Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon prior to the midnight showing of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

The move should keep so-called “Twi-hards” occupied instead of camping outside of movie theaters the entire day before. AMC must have been successful in their previous attempt when 150 theaters screened Iron Man before the midnight Iron Man 2 showing.

Either way, this is a great move to bring people to the movie theaters (especially if you’re AMC). Not that Twilight fans would have been anywhere else – but theaters are fighting to maintain their legacy ...

Click to continue reading Theaters To Show Full ‘Twilight’ Saga

Summit Entertainment continues to build fan anticipation for the continuing adventures of Bella, Edward, and Jacob in the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse with the release of a set of IMAX character posters and two new clips from the film.

First, have a look at this scene from Eclipse in which an enraged Edward (Robert Pattinson) confronts Jacob (Taylor Lautner) after he tries to put the moves on Bella (Kristen Stewart).

Between Edward zooming out of his SUV like Sonic the Hedgehog and the Michael Bay-esque swooping camerawork, I admit that I find this scene more unintentionally funny than anything else. Hopefully, dedicated Twilight fans will find it riveting enough.

There’s also a new clip of an exchange between vampire Rosalie (Nikki Reed) and Bella for you to see as well.

There are new posters for several upcoming movies – The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The A-Team, Despicable Me, Gulliver’s Travels, Burke and Hare, and Kane and Lynch – now available for you Screen Rant readers to check out.

First, Summit Entertainment has unleashed a new banner for this summer’s Eclipse, the latest entry in the Twilight series.

The third chapter in The Twilight Saga looks to be the darkest film yet, with a plot that involves an evil vampire’s quest for vengeance and the outbreak of war between the werewolves and the vampires. As with the first two Twilight films, don’t expect non-fans of the franchise to race out to see this one when it hits theaters.
