Nominees for the 31st Annual Razzie Awards have been announced and M. Night Shyamalan’s much-derided TV show adaptation, The Last Airbender, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse are the leaders in the contest to be officially ordained the “best of the worst” in 2010.

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

As the summer hits continue to make their way onto DVD and Blu-ray, this week’s releases present some of the biggest movies of 2010. Over $2.5 billion of this year’s worldwide box office is accounted for in the three movies hitting shelves this week – Inception, Twilight: Eclipse and Shrek Forever After.

Ironically, the three Blu-ray re-releases this week were low-budget films that gained traction with dedicated fans. Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation actually made $119 million on only a $4 million budget. Technically, that makes it the most profitable movie of the week.

Sony has also revamped a collection of previously released Blu-rays. Essentially, this is a mass re-release of BDs currently out of circulation and many include extra special features. The films include Closer, The Big Hit, About Last Night…, The Deep, St. Elmo’s Fire ...

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is going to Japan and while he doesn’t need his memory to earn a new love interest and some enemies, he does need a new director. Through interviews after the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s been clear that Gavin Hood would not be back to direct the sequel – perhaps a result of the poor critical response to the film.

While there was talk of Bryan Singer possibly taking the director’s chair, he was instead given the chance to helm the X-Men prequel, First Class, until scheduling issues caused him to step out and into the producer role. So who then could we see join Twentieth Century Fox to direct Wolverine 2?

It wasn’t surprising that the Twilight Saga: Eclipse er…. eclipsed every other film at the box office over the fourth of July weekend. The vampire film banked a mighty $161 million since it opened last week. With a budget of under $70 million this is yet another profitable film in Summit’s mighty franchise. The film has now grossed over $260 million worldwide – how much of this was due to Taylor Lautner’s six pack or Robert Pattinson’s hair? You tell me?

Twilight: Eclipse bested its predecessor The Twilight Saga: New Moon to break the all-time record for biggest midnight box office reception in history. According to Variety, Eclipse earned a stunning $30 million from its midnight showings, which took place on 4,000 screens nationwide. By comparison, New Moon opened to $26.3 million during its midnight showing.

By now, it should be no surprise that Twilight can bring in the big bucks. Still, $30 million in one night is an impressive haul.

Besides its mega numbers on regular screens, Eclipse also set a midnight box office record for IMAX, earning over $1 million across 192 IMAX showings. There’s no reason to expect that the Twilight train will run out of steam anytime soon, either.

The latest banners for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse have hit the web for your viewing pleasure, along with the official movie poster for this year’s August horror release, Piranha 3D.

Theaters around the U.S. will be jam-packed with diehard Twilight lovers next Wednesday at midnight, when Eclipse makes its way into theaters.  It’s been less than eight months since Bella, Edward, and Jacob last graced the big screen in New Moon, but fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to see the gloomy trio’s love triangle become all the more complicated by an impending battle between the werewolves and vampires.

Hopefully, director David Slade (30 Days of Night) will deliver the goods – lest he find himself being hunted down by a vengeful mob of Twilight types, armed with pitchforks and torches.

Last week, MTV released two new promos for this year’s MTV Movie Awards featuring Tom Cruise’s popular character, Les Grossman, from the 2008 Ben Stiller blockbuster Tropic Thunder. In the promos, Grossman, whose profanity-laced outbursts were one of the best parts of Tropic Thunder, offers hilariously questionable advice (and abuse) to the stars of the Twilight franchise, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

It’s nice to see Tom Cruise back in character for these MTV promos. When you talk about Tropic Thunder, the conversation almost always centers around his performance and Robert Downey Jr.’s, and rightfully so. That film single-handedly reminded the world just how awesome Tom Cruise can be when he’s not busy jumping on Oprah’s couch or criticizing psychotherapy on national news programs.
