When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

This week’s home video releases are mostly new, which is a pleasant change. The summer’s hits, and misses, are finally reaching DVD and Blu-ray.

If you are wondering why Metropolis has found its way into the Breakdown again, it was delayed at the last minute last week. No worries, the ultimate classic epic will be on shelves this week.

Stallone brings some much-needed testosterone to an otherwise low-key week of new releases. Also, the mixture of romance and drama has full control over this week’s releases.

Box Office

George Clooney once again proved his movie star credentials by out grossing every other film in the top ten. The American should take in an estimated $16.5 million over the four day holiday weekend, giving the hit-man drama a total gross of $20 million. The Expendables edges out five new releases at the weekend box office; Underworld 4 will rise in January of 2012; Mark Strong talks Green Lantern; creepy elevator images from Devil; Ryan Reynolds is one hard-working guy; Google is getting its own movie; the production schedule and shooting location for Super 8 has been revealed; and lots more.

Sly Stallone and his brigade of manly men retained the box office crown for a second weekend as The Expendables was top dog yet again. The ultra-explosive action flick grossed an estimated $16.5 million, raising its 10-day total to just under $65 million in the U.S. Does this mean Expendables 2 will happen after all? If it does, then Chuck Norris had better join the party the next time around.

You might remember that about a week or so ago we ran a piece asking the average movie goer why they care if critics hate the movies they like. It was a wonderful op-ed from our own Paul Young, who had grown frustrated with a seemingly increasing trend of movie fans slamming movie critics, simply because the critic had a bad opinion about a movie the fans loved.

Well, flash-forward a week and now it seems we’re having the opposite problem: critics are up in arms that movie fans didn’t turn out in droves to support a film critics felt deserved the box office profits to match their high acclaim.

After appearing most recently in Gary Marshall’s Valentine’s Day, Julia Roberts is jumping right back on the rom-com bandwagon with Eat, Pray, Love – which is based on the memoirs of Elizabeth Gilbert. Unhappy with her marriage, Elizabeth decides to devote some time to herself and travels to Italy, India, and Bali. Sony has released the first official trailer for the film, which you can watch below.

I’m taking the high road here: I won’t dismiss this film outright. The movie seems to disregard the tropes of a typical romantic comedy in favor of a road to self-discovery, which has the potential to be a refreshing change in an increasingly tired genre. Warning: Javier Bardem’s brief appearance in the trailer might undercut this point in the final film, but hopefully the filmmakers reward the individuality of Roberts’ character ...

This week:

Will Ferrell has a Hangover while the box office is UP; Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway do Drugs; Mary-Kate Olsen, Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens are Beastly; Sigourney Weaver returns to aliens; Lemony Snicket gets animated and Roberts and Bardem Eat.

Pixar’s UP stayed on top of the box office with a second weekend gross of $44 million. With great reviews and $137 million already in the bank, it looks like UP will be one of the biggest hits of the summer season.The R-rated comedy The Hangover opened strong in second place with a weekend take of $43 million. With a sequel already in development, it looks like a weekend that Warner Bros. doesn’t want to forget.

Speaking of hangovers – Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost opened to a pretty lackluster $19 million. Looks like the films ...
