2012 Razzie Nominations: Adam Sandler & ‘Transformers 3′ Lead the Pack

Just in time for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, nominees have been announced for the 32nd Annual Razzie Awards. “Winners” of the awards (meant to (dis-) honor the “Worst Achievements in Film” during 2011) will be accordingly announced this year on (when else?) April Fools’ Day.

Leading the pack of 2012 Razzie contenders are some usual suspects, in the form of Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise (thanks to Transformers: Dark of the Moon) and Adam Sandler in a record-breaking nomination run, due to his involvement with such critically-ravaged titles as Just Go with It, Jack and Jill, and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.

Sandler has managed to smash Eddie Murphy’s record for most Razzie nods in a single year (the latter received 5 back in 2007) by stacking up a whopping 11 nominations in 2012. That’s due ...

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: May 31, 2011

This is an absolutely mammoth week for Blu-ray fans. New releases include Biutiful, Drive Angry and True Blood Season 3, but all of these pale in comparison to the classics hitting Blu-ray this week.

Everything from the much-anticipated Kubrick Collection to hilarious ’80s comedies like Back to School will arrive on shelves in stunning Blu-ray. There is heartbreak in Midnight Cowboy and laughter in City Slickers. A cowboy theme runs throughout the Blu-rays, but not all of them feature the Western motif.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: February 27, 2011

This week:

Owen Wilson has the highest new entry at the box office with Hall Pass, while Nic Cage runs out of gas with Drive Angry; Patrick Wilson and James Marsden move into a Loft; Clint Eastwood’s J.Edgar has someone to Root for; Gerard Butler is Playing The Field with Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel and Steve Carell moves out of The Office and onto the stage with Burt Wonderstone.

Box Office

Oscar weekend saw quite a few weak performing films at the box office. The Elton John soundtracked Gnomeo & Juliet was first after singing-up an additional $14.2 million. The Shakespeare themed ‘toon has now grossed over $75 million.

The Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass (read our review) opened at number two with a not very impressive $13.5 million. The comedy which stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudekis failed to find an audience like other buddy-comedies such as

Drive Angry debuts in just over two weeks, taking moviegoers along for a ride with Nicolas Cage’s returned-from-the-dead, shotgun-wielding criminal on a mission to save his granddaughter from cultists who seek to sacrifice her.

We’ve seen plenty of Drive Angry TV spots already, including one very adult-oriented R-rated ad, but here’s another new one made just for the Super Bowl.

‘Drive Angry 3D’ Red Band TV Spot

Hollywood’s finest will be donning elegant gowns and spiffy tuxedos to attend the 2011 Oscars ceremony on Feburary 27th. So why shouldn’t everyone else celebrate the event that weekend by instead checking out the latest R-Rated, Nicolas-Cage-is-a-madman thrill ride, Drive Angry 3D?

The previously-released international trailer and TV spots did a commendable job of offering a G-Rated glimpse at Cage’s new B-movie – and now there’s a red band television preview that includes some very NSFW footage from the exploitive action pic.

Like a bat out of hell, sporting a fresh new blonde hairdo and a nasty scar around his left eye, Nicolas Cage will be back in theaters next month with Drive Angry 3D – an R-Rated thrill ride from director Patrick Lussier, the man that threw pickaxes at the camera in his 3D remake of My Bloody Valentine.

Don’t mess with Nicolas Cage. Seriously, the man has made a career by freaking out onscreen (warning: that link is NSFW) and in this February’s Drive Angry 3D he’s a fresh escapee from Hell who’s infuriated beyond all comparison, armed to kill, and behind the wheel of a seemingly indestructible Black ’71 Challenger.

If that description didn’t send shivers down your spine, then perhaps the film’s new UK trailer and familiar-looking poster will convince you that there’s nothing more dangerous than a furious Nic Cage behind the wheel of an unregistered vehicle.

When the teaser trailer for Drive Angry 3D was released back in August, it was hard to assess whether the new Nicolas Cage vehicle (no pun intended) would be marvelously over-the-top or just plain silly.

Now a full-length trailer for the supernatural thrill ride that is Drive Angry 3D (these puns are too easy, sorry) – a film actually shot in 3D, not converted during post-production – has made its way online and, well, we’re still not sure whether the pic will be an entertaining B-movie or just inane.

‘Drive Angry 3D’ Teaser Trailer

Last month at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard made an appearance on a panel to promote their upcoming revenge thriller Drive Angry 3D. They brought along some footage and it appears some of that footage has found its way online in the form of a teaser trailer.

Drive Angry 3D isn’t your typical revenge tale, as it brings in a supernatural element. It follows a father who’s escaped from hell (seriously!) to get revenge on the people who murdered his daughter and stole (and presumably still have) her baby. Do you really need anymore of the plot explained? I don’t – in fact the film had me with its blunt title.

Comic-Con 2010: Drive Angry 3D Panel Featuring Nic Cage

Nicolas Cage was at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con today to promote his new action revenge movie, Drive Angry 3D. For those who are new to Drive Angry, here’s a one line synopsis of the film: A vengeful father hunts down the people who brutally killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby.

Think of it as a supernatural version Taken, but with more guns, more blood, and, of course, 3D. Read on to see our thoughts on the panel and our first look at the adrenaline-charged footage.

The panel got started with a bang when moderator Drew McWeeny of HitFix introduced the footage. The lights dimmed, the audience donned their 3D glasses, and the screen filled with the image of a scarred Nicolas Cage holding a gun over a man.

Comic-Con: Summit Presenting Exclusive Footage of Red and Drive Angry 3D

Summit Entertainment, the folks behind the jaw-droppingly popular Twilight franchise, will be out in full force at Comic-Con this year. This time around, the studio is offering convention attendees sneak peeks at two highly anticipated action films: Red, starring Bruce Willis, and Drive Angry 3D, starring Nicolas Cage.

Red

Red is an adaptation of Warren Ellis’ three-issue comic book series about retired spies who are unexpectedly forced back into action. At Comic-Con, a number of the film’s stars, including Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Mary Louise Parker, and Karl Urban will join Warren Ellis and director Robert Schwentke to talk about the film and answer questions from the audience. They will also premiere the final trailer for the film.

Producer Mike De Luca Talks Drive Angry & Dracula Year Zero

One look at his IMDB page will show you that producer Mike De Luca is a busy guy. Some of the movies he is involved with include the Nicolas Cage films Ghost Rider 2 and Drive Angry, as well as the Alex Proyer-directed Dracula Year Zero. Recently, Steve Weintraub from Collider had the chance to talk to De Luca about all three of these upcoming features. We covered Steve’s conversation with De Luca about Ghost Rider 2 last week, and today he posted the segment where De Luca opened up about the latter two films.

Summit Entertainment Set To ‘Drive Angry’

One of two upcoming revenge projects that Nicolas Cage has on his slate – the other being The Hungry Rabbit Jumps – is the thriller, Drive Angry. The film is about a man who sets out for revenge after his daughter is killed and her baby his stolen. His ploy for revenge soon gets out of hand as, “the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.”

As I said at the time, it sounds like the Liam Neeson thriller, Taken on wheels… Something about it must have an interesting hook, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment (who have enjoyed success lately with New Moon making serious box office bank) has picked up the North American distribution rights to Drive Angry.

Think you’ve seen enough of Nicolas Cage? Well get ready for some more of him, in 3D no less!

Cage has signed on to a project called Drive Angry (yes, that’s the title), which is a revenge film about a man driven by rage (see what they did there?) who is chasing the people who killed his daughter and stole her baby. The rescue/vendetta then gets out of control, “as the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.”
