Bragi F. Schut’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter screenplay has been kicked around Hollywood for the past decade. Filmmakers such as Robert Schwentke (RED), Marcus Nispel (Conan the Barbarian), Stefan Ruzowitzky (Anatomy) and David Slade (Twilight: Eclipse) have all either circled or been briefly attached to direct the Dracula project at different points in time.

Heat Vision is reporting that Neil Marshall has become the latest director to board Last Voyage of the Demeter (pun intended), with Millennium Films in line to back the project; Bradley Fischer, Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer are attached to produce. Those three gentlemen have previously worked together on a handful of projects that constantly changed hands during development, but eventually proved to be worth all the sweat and tears (see: Zodiac, Shutter Island and Black Swan).

Were you already struggling to keep track of which studio was working on which Dracula retelling? Well, Sony Pictures has decided to contribute to your ongoing confusion by paying a handsome sum to acquire a pitch for yet another new spin on Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel about the eponymous immortal blood-sucking monster of the night.

Sony’s Dracula project has already snagged Joe Roth and Palak Patel as producers. That pair’s collective resume already includes three other major classic literature retellings and/or spinoffs: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, this summer’s Snow White and the Huntsman, and Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful (which is due out in Spring 2013).

With news that Russell Crowe is in early talks for the Dracula re-imagining Harker still hot off the press, we have an update on another reworking of Bram Stoker’s iconic vampire tale. The title in question is Dracula Year Zero, a project that reportedly ties together aspects of the traditional Dracula mythology with historical elements from the actual life of Prince Vlad the Impaler – in order to produce a more sympathetic portrayal of the semi-immortal bloodsucker.

Alex Proyas was originally onboard to direct Year Zero, but left the project after its was temporarily “killed,” due to budget issues. As bad luck would have it, the same exact fate has now befallen the film Proyas moved onto after Year Zero collapsed (the Paradise Lost adaptation).

Warner Bros. is looking to recruit Russell Crowe for 'Harker', a reworking of the 'Dracula' story that will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan).

Moviegoers will be seeing a whole lot of Russell Crowe onscreen in the foreseeable future. He’s expected to appear in RZA’s The Man with the Iron Fists before the year is out, and will also be seen playing Inspector Javert in the Les Misérables musical adaptation, due out by December 2012. Thereafter, in 2013, he can be seen portraying the biological father of Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, as well as a corrupt politician in Allen Hughes’ Broken City.

Crowe also recently became loosely attached to Akiva Goldsman’s Winter’s Tale – not to mention, he’s admitted to giving serious consideration to starring in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah after he completes work on Les Miz (but not the RoboCop reboot, as was previously rumored).

With Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra re-envisioning the Dracula mythology in Harker, and Alex Proyas exploring the titular vampire’s history in Dracula: Year Zero, it seems odd to say that Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D is seemingly the only straightforward adaptation of Bram Stoker’s iconic Gothic horror novel currently in the works.

That’s happens to be the case right now, and the cult director’s 3D take on the iconic blood-drinking ghoul has appropriately landed another talent with a cult following: Rutger Hauer.

It’s classic movie monster time! I was going to wait until Christmas to talk about this, but now seemed like a more appropriate time. We are going to compare the original black and white movie monsters (and the actors who brought them to life), against more modern versions and actors to see who comes out on top.

I know there are dozens of classic monsters, including the Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Fly, giant robots, aliens, and over-sized insects/animals, but I’m going to focus on the more famous literary monsters : Frankenstein’s monster, The Wolf Man, Dracula and The Mummy.

Let’s start with my favorite character, Frankenstein’s monster. Most people incorrectly refer to the monster AS Frankenstein – but actually, author Mary Shelley never gave the creature a name. In the 1818 novel, Shelley writes about mad scientist Dr. ...

Click to continue reading Classic Movie Monsters vs. Modern Movie Monsters

The basic idea is that the movie will highlight the fictional character based on the real person known as “Vlad the Impaler” before he became a vampire.

According to Sci Fi Wire:

“The film will show Vlad when he was still vital and will explore the fact that he’s considered a hero in Romania for fending off the Turks.”

Maybe at some very early point Vlad/Dracula was a “good guy”, but I’m certainly hoping that they show his descent into evil in the movie. After all, he did get the catchy nickname “The Impaler.”
