I think it’d be a little better if they kept more of the color in the image but it’s cool nonetheless and I’ll definitely be seeing this the day it comes out.

So far I’m compiling quite a list of movies to watch this fall: Surrogates, Armored, Pandorum, Gamer, 9, Whiteout, Extract, Trucker; and that’s just the first 3 weeks of September. Now, I’m adding a new one to my list – Dorian Gray.

Based on the 1890 novel by Oscar Wilde, Dorian Gray follows the exploits of a young man who meets artist Basil Hallward. Hallward paints a picture of Gray and becomes infatuated with him. When Gray realizes that one day that his beauty and lifestyle will fade, he sells his soul to have Basil’s painting age instead of him.

It’s an interesting story, to be sure, and the topics it covered – homosexuality, debauchery, self-indulgence – were highly controversial, even by today’s standards, in the late 1800’s. The novel is still considered to be one of the greatest examples of modern day Western Literature. The teaser trailer, however, doesn’t seem to be all that spectacular to me. Watch it below and see what you think. Thanks to Shock Till You Drop for exclusively nabbing the trailer:

.

Starring Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) as Dorian Gray, Colin Firth (Nanny McPhee) as Lord Henry Wotton and Ben Chaplin (The Water Horse) as Basil Howard, the movie is not lacking in the acting department. All are fine solid performers and their chemistry on screen should be good. Rachel Hurd-Wood, who was Wendy in the 2003 version of Peter Pan, is all grown up now and plays the stage actress Sybil Vane, who is the love interest to Gray.

All of the above names seem good to me, so why am I left feeling “ehh?” about the teaser? Maybe it’s director Oliver Parker’s vision of the novel that he has brought to the screen? The last two movies I saw he directed were The Importance of Being Earnest and Othello. Both were decent, solid attempts at bringing great literary tales to the silver screen, with Laurence Fishburne’s performance in Othello being the highlight of both films.

So, perhaps it’s just the way this teaser was cut, all dark and moody, with close up flashes of what is going on, instead of giving us some piece of the story. It is, after all, just a teaser and I’m hoping the full trailer will be much better, with the movie being superb. I read this novel in college and it deserves to be told properly and not in a comic book style like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

What did you think of the Dorian Gray teaser? Is the movie worth adding to your fall line up or would you rather wait for the DVD?

Dorian Gray starts to age September 9th, 2009.
