1. Michael Keaton’s latest film, Penthouse North has been picked up by Dimension Films.

Joseph Ruben directs David Loughery’s script which sees Michelle Monaghan as a blind photographer terrorized by Keaton. The reason? She has millions of dollars worth of stolen diamonds hidden in her apartment.

Rubeun knows how to put together an adult oriented thriller; his original The Stepfather is a minor-classic in the horror genre, while his Julia Roberts effort Sleeping With The Enemy grossed over $100 million (in 1991 money). Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: September 4th, 2011

This week:

The Help stays at the top of the box office while The Debt owes nothing to Apollo 18 and Shark Night; Maria Maggenti has the time of her life writing Dirty Dancing; Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are driving The Great Gatsby to big screen success; Berenger, Boothe and Winningham join Costner and Paxton in Hatfields and McCoys and Anna Kendrick is Pitch Perfect for her new role.

Box Office

Sleeper hit The Help retained the top spot during another subdued weekend at the box office. The drama should score $18 million over the four day weekend ($14 million for the three days). The film’s total now stands at $122 million.

Sam Worthington’s The Debt (read our review) was at number two with a long weekend gross in the region of $12 million($9.6 million for the three days). The John Madden directed thriller has grossed $14 ...

‘High School Musical’ Helmer is Directing the ‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake

Those of you who were hoping that Hollywood’s 1980s remake fever was starting to abate… well, this story isn’t for you.

A remake of the 1987 hit Dirty Dancing has been in the works since at least 2009 – and, just like the reworking of fellow 80s relic Short Circuit, studio heads are hoping to jump-start development of the project by hiring on a new director.

Deadline has learned that original Dirty Dancing choreographer Kenny Ortega has landed the job of helming the remake. Nowadays, Ortega is better known as the helmer/dance supervisor of squeaky-clean Disney musicals like Newsies and all three High School Musical movies.

Patrick Swayze Dies At 57

It’s a sad today today as another great actor passes away.

Patrick Swayze, 57, has lost his difficult battle with cancer and passed away today with his family at his side.

The star actor had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer early last year and while he’d been fighting through it when patients with this type of cancer expect to only live six months, it didn’t stop the cowboy from working and keeping optimistic, acting as an inspiration to everyone around him. It got a lot worse recently and he had been forced to rely on a wheelchair – but he still kept wearing his cowboy hat and not giving up.

Dirty Dancing Remake in Development

Lionsgate studios has recently reached into the Hollywood remake bag and pulled out…Dirty Dancing! That’s right; the studio elites are at it again with their latest announcement to develop a script by Julia Dahl (Uptown Girl) into a living, breathing Dirty Dancing remake of the classic 80′s dance film.

A director has yet to be announced but, as sure as I am pudgy, they will pick some hip music/dance film director like Anne Fletcher (Step Up), Thomas Carter (Save the Last Dance) or Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard). All of whom would be fine choices.

This is not the first dancing remake penciled onto the calendar though. Kevin Bacon’s signature dance flick, Footloose, has been in development for months now. I can’t say that I blame Lionsgate for giving Dirty Dancing a remake though. The movie was made ...
