Are you one of the 1.5 million viewers that tuned in for the fourth season premiere of Dexter? Do you want more stories of your favorite serial killer, but tired of waiting between in week? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions above, then Showtime has something you just might like. Cue the announcement of their new animated web series, Dexter: Early Cuts, that will premiere Sunday, October 25 on Sho.com.

Presented in a similar styling to Warner Bros. recent motion comics, Dexter: Early Cuts will cover all new, never before told, stories from three of Dexter’s previous “victims.” The series will be total twelve episodes (one each week) with each victim receiving four, one to two minute episodes.

The people who will be the focus of Dexter’s justice have been announced as:

Alex Timmons – A corrupt Gulf War veteran recently acquitted of murder.

Gene Marshall – An arsonist.

Cindy Landon – A “black widow.”

The series will be narrated by Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, written by series writer and producer, Lauren Gussis and Kyle Baker. Andres Vera Martinez and Ty Templeton will each illustrate one of the three story-arcs.

In addition to the stories of Dexter’s past “victims,” we will also learn more about how his serial killer techniques have evolved from then, when/why he began collecting slides and how he bought his infamous boat.

Check out the trailer below to get a sneak peek at Dexter’s first target, Alex Timmons.

I love this show and I’m looking forward to hearing more stories from the world of Dexter. I’ve been watching the motion comics Warner Bros. has put out and I’ve really enjoyed their ability to tell a story in a new and different way. Although, I’m not sure I’ll have enough patience to keep checking in each week for only a one to two minute clip. Showtime has spoiled me with 54 minute, commercial free Dexter episodes for three years, so I think it’ll be something that I either watch when the entire twelve week run is over or every four weeks, as each story completes. Actually, it’s entirely possible that I might completely forget about them and it’ll end up being a nice surprise when I purchase the season four DVD set.

I’m glad that Showtime has gotten behind Dexter and is doing more to promote the show and while I still have a bad taste in my mouth over what happened to Dead Like Me, the way they’re treating Dexter has me warming to them.

Still… I’ll never forget.

If you’re curious what all this talk about Dexter is about, but don’t have Showtime, you can sign-up as a Showtime – VIP Insider and watch the fourth season premiere for free.

As stated above, Dexter: Early Cuts will premier October 25th on Sho.com. Also, don’t forget to watch Dexter at 9PM on Showtime.

Dexter’s season opener attracted 1.5 million viewers, proving that it’s still one of the strongest shows on a cable network.

We’re a few days later than most on reviewing and discussing the premiere episode of Dexter, but here we are nonetheless. Be warned before reading the rest of this article that it will include MAJOR SPOILERS so unless you either watched the premiere yourself (and why would you really be interested in reading this if you didn’t?) or if you just don’t care about whether or not you’re spoiled, you might want to stop reading.

Good to go? Let’s begin then.

Episode one, entitled “Living the Dream,” picks up roughly a year (give or take a few months) after the end end of season 3, with Dexter’s wife, Rita (Julie Benz), having had his baby. We catch up with our favorite serial killer now trying to cope with the sleepless nights and tiredness of being father to a young child.

The opening sequence was particularly chilling and memorable, with the introduction of John Lithgow’s serial killer who we see preparing to and subsequently murdering a woman in a bathtub. What was especially creepy about this scene was not only did Lithgow’s character kill someone, but he was lying in the bath (naked, as was the woman), holding the woman in front of him before slicing her leg open until she bled out. Okay, I apologize if you’re eating while reading this, I’ll leave the rest of the gruesomeness to the show itself…

This sequence was intercut (no pun intended) with footage of the familiar sequence of Dexter driving his car with his, “Tonight’s the night,” narration. We assume he’s about to kill someone, as he usually does, but we find out that, “Tonight’s the night,” is referring to him hopefully getting some rest from his new baby son (an early imitation of the title sequence showed off Dexter’s tiredness in a very funny way). This is one of the key points of season 4’s first episode, and I assume those to come, in that Dexter’s time now belongs to his family (along with Rita and his new baby, he also has Rita’s kids, Astor and Cody to deal with) and thus he can’t kill. However, family duties are also taking away from his job as a blood-spatter analyst (something which he’s usually unrivaled at).

Dexter the family man.

Dexter’s fatigue gets serious when, as he’s giving evidence in a murder case in court, he actually confuses cases, causing the defense to deem his work (and the entire prosecution against the killer) incompetent. Of course Dexter, being the decent guy he is (when not killing), fully admits to his mistake.

Other than Dexter, we of course have his sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter – Michael C. Hall’s real-life wife, FYI), who’s still dating “The Skinner” victim, Anton Briggs (David Ramsey) and is still trying to find out who her father cheated on her mother with (Dexter’s biological mother, if you remember). Detective Angel Batista (David Zayas) is no longer dating Gianna, but in quite a surprising turn of events is now sleeping with Lt. Laguerta (Lauren Velez), behind the back of everyone else (obviously…). And Detective Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington – a welcome addition to the cast last season, as he continues to be) is still working with Miama Metro (he starts to get on Dexter’s back after the “mixing up of cases” incident mentioned above).

Of course, the opening sequence of Lithgow’s killer chillingly murdering someone in a bathtub wasn’t for nothing, and Dexter is assigned to the crime scene because of the buckets of blood (“Talk about your bloodbath,” the ever sarcastic Vince Masuka remarks at the crime scene). We start to see hints of just how much of a professional Lithgow’s killer is; he’s not just some idiot criminal who kills people and runs – he takes his time and thoroughly cleans up after himself.

Even if Dexter now has a family, that doesn’t stop him from eyeing up another potential victim: the man who got away with murder after Dexter mixed up his case (a perfect opportunity). He hasn’t killed someone in months which, as we’ve seen before, causes much tension and anxiety for Dexter. It’s like watching a junkie desperate for a fix, but with other factors (which now firmly includes a family) stopping him. Towards the end of the episode, we see Dexter setting up to kill in an area that we haven’t seen in the show before – a boxing ring. He covered the boxing ring with his trademark plastic sheets, shrinkwrapped his victim to the table, quickly killed him (he had to rush as Rita called and asked him to pick up medicine for the baby ASAP) and after cutting him into pieces, put him in the car and rushed off.

[Warning: the following contains SPOILERS about the events of Dexter seasons 1-3]

Dexter is one of those shows that, in my opinion, hasn’t changed much in terms of quality throughout the seasons. Each season had its highlights – Season 1 introduced the idea of a “friendly serial killer”; Season 2 had the Miami Police Department unknowingly hunting Dexter (who works from them himself); and for Season 3, it was Dexter unwisely trusting someone he barely knows. The quality of the show is consistently high – think about how rare that is.

And, since he totally deserves it, I must make mention of the fact that Michael C. Hall is utterly brilliant as Dexter.

[End of spoilers]

I’m digging the artwork for the third season of Dexter: It gives off the feeling of him being a professional at what he does. It’s simple, clear, and most importantly, it’s not too cluttered.

With regards to Dexter in general, if I had to choose a favorite season I think it would have to be season 2, simply because, to me, it was the most compelling as far as “what’s going to happen next?” However, that certainly doesn’t take away anything from either the first or third season.

If you haven’t had the chance to watch Dexter yet, I recommend you do so ASAP. If you enjoy compelling, exciting, unpredictable, well-acted and well-written TV, I promise it won’t let you down.

What is your opinion on the artwork for the third season DVD and Blu-ray of Dexter? Are you a fan of the show? If so, what’s been your favorite season so far?

Welcome to my corner of Thursdays where we get to chat about some of the other goings on from the world of (soon to be totally digital) TV.

This week, we take a look at some noise about Chuck, news about some Dexter casting, the premiere date for Eureka on Sci-Fi (SyFy) and why Eleventh Hour got dumped.

While we’re at it, I also chat about TNT ordering it’s own version of V, Doctor Who guest starring in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and if there are any Gigantor fans out there, I’ve got a bit of news for you.

And of course, at the end of the article, I entice you with a ratings chart showing how our favored shows did last week.

 Curious Tidbit About Chuck

Despite the lengthy wait from NBC to actually commit to Chuck, NBC entertainment president Ben Silverman is being noted in saying that if the ratings for Chuck do well enough, they may deliver more than the 13 episodes that the network originally committed to.

He then mentioned that extending the episode count would pair it up with Friday Night Lights in the summer. Hmm, historically, FNL has aired on Friday nights. Are they looking to air Chuck on Friday nights or move FNL to another night? Curious.

He then notes how they want to keep Chuck on the air for years to come.

This, about a show they couldn’t commit to until the near last minute before the upfronts, and then after some cost concessions. Why weren’t they saying that before the upfronts? I don’t know about you, but I’m putting my knee high boots on because I can’t stand lip-service.

Dexter’s New Bad Guy

Sources are reporting that John Lithgow is joining the season 4 cast of Dexter as Walter Simmons. Hmm. Mr. Simmons is an unassuming suburbanite who lives a dual life as one of America’s most prolific and deadliest serial killers.

When Simmons moves to Miami, Dexter becomes obsessed with his efficient killing methods and the fact that he’s escaped capture for close to 30 years.

Season 4 of Dexter starts on Sept. 27.

Eureka Premiere Date

The Sci-Fi Channel will be premiering Eureka on July 10th.

A small death knell in the background can be heard because it’s only going to have 10 episodes aired.

What’s up with that Sci-Fi?

Why Was Eleventh Hour dumped?

Despite decent ratings, Eleventh Hour was dumped by CBS, as we discovered at the CBS upfronts.

Yet decent ratings isn’t good enough when they have other shows in their lineup doing much better. At least that’s the spin that the CBS Sr. VP of prime time, Kelly Kahl, is saying. And to some extent, that’s true since they’ve nailed down 5th through 12th place in the ratings chart from last week.

Eleventh Hour was a casualty to make room for new shows… they say.

Me, I say that since I reported back in August of 2008 that Eleventh Hour was one of the most expensive shows to hit any network, coming in at a rumored $2 million per episode price tag is what killed it.

TNT Keeping Up With V

It looks like the TNT network is playing catch up now that ABC has V coming down the pipe.

TNT has ordered a pilot for a yet to be named alien-invasion TV series. They’re looking to DreamWorks TV and executive producers Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Robert Rodat to bring it in a big way.

The story is reported to be set six months after Earth is invaded by aliens.

I hate carbon copy catch up shows, no matter who helms them. At least the premise of idea. Now they may hit it out of the park, but I remember Spielberg’s last sci-fi on TV effort, Taken, and I wasn’t thrilled by it.
