‘Dexter’ Season 9 Still a Possibility; Showtime Exec Offers New Story Hints

Showtime President of Entertainment, David Nevins, is quickly becoming one of the most noncommittal and chatty network heads in the business – taking every TV-related event he attends as an opportunity to toy with the emotions of Dexter fans.

However, this time, Nevins is set to deliver some good news and intriguing details for fans of the Bay Harbor Butcher – as the Showtime executive indicates that, while the writing team is still working toward a Dexter season 8 end-date, there’s still a possibility that the show could continue on into season 9 and beyond.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Nevins remained open to the possibility of further seasons of Dexter as well as offered an intriguing detail about what audiences might be able to expect next season:

For the past six years, Dexter fans have been waiting with anticipation for the moment when Dexter’s foul-mouthed sister, Deb, would finally bear witness to his Dark Passenger. Thanks to the Dexter season 6 finale, that moment has arrived.

What to know what happens next? ‘Dexter’ Season 7 Details Revealed

After a somewhat disappointing downturn for season 5, the Dexter hype machine – started by Showtime head David Nevins – proclaimed season 6 to be a chance to bring Dexter Morgan “back to his roots.”

While that may have been the goal – and there is plenty of evidence to suggest this – the execution of season 6 has been such that Dexter doesn’t really resemble itself any longer, and with the quality of the program arguably waning, one begins to wonder how the show’s final two seasons will fare. Since there’ll be several months to wait until season 7, one bright spot to point out is that after season 6, the only place Dexter can go is up.

In what has been a pretty uneventful season of Dexter, things are finally beginning to heat up, as everyone’s favorite serial killer goes looking for the one that got away, in the episode ‘Ricochet Rabbit.’

After the twist that surprised absolutely no one in last week’s episode, ‘Get Gellar,’ Dexter finds himself hunting Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks), the real Doomsday Killer, and the suspect that managed to evade Dexter’s usually impeccable serial killer detection skills – or ‘murdar,’ to coin a colloquialism.

Before Dexter can get his hands on Travis, however, DDK has a heart-to-heart with his imaginary mentor, Dr. Gellar (Edward James Olmos), who informs Travis that not only was he responsible for the death of the professor, but also instrumental in getting Gellar fired from the university at which he taught.

What is to become of Darkly Dreaming Dexter? While the future is still murky for TV’s favorite serial killer, one thing is for certain – the end is nearer than some might have thought.

Nearly two weeks after Showtime announced that Dexter would be returning for at least two more seasons, network president, David Nevins, has confirmed that the writers and producers are in the process of outlining an end date for the fan-favorite series – specifically that season six will set the stage for a season eight series finale.

Shortly after Showtime’s renewal announcement (which sewed-up contract negotiations with star Michael C. Hall), Nevins hinted that the showrunners were on-track with a “three year trajectory” (which included season six) that could potentially end with the series finale.

Despite some ups and downs, Showtime’s Dexter continues to be a ratings hit and critical darling for the subscription network. While certain aspects of the fan-favorite series are less cohesive, and subsequently less entertaining, than others – there’s no doubt the trials, tribulations, and murders of Miami Metro’s “blood guy” continue to captivate audiences.

Showtime’s Dexter has always toed the line between a tragic addict and a heroic vigilante, but in the latest Season 6 trailer, he’s downright saintly. The latest look at Dexter’s continuing trials gives us a subtle hint at the show’s renewed focus.

The minute-long video shows Michael C. Hall walking through a church strewn with religious regalia as his own voice-over considers the more positive effects of his serial killer ways. As Dexter comes to his conclusion (to the tune of Hallelujah) he’s framed as the very first psychopathic murderer blessed by The Almighty. Masuka (C.S. Lee) brings him back to reality in the middle of his blood-spattered element.

The sixth season of Showtime’s serial killer drama Dexter is in production at the moment, and casting for yet another critical character has been revealed. Molly Parker will play Lisa Marshall, sister to Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks).

Little is known about Hanks’ character, leading to speculation that he may be a villain (in so much as you can have villains for a serial killer). We do know that Hanks will appear in every episode, but the extent of Parker’s involvement is still in question. Given her late casting, she may only appear in 2-4 episodes.

Battlestar Galactica‘s Edward James Olmos will be making Miami his new port of call. The veteran actor has signed on for a major arc in Dexter‘s sixth season.

Sources say that Olmos will be playing an enlightened religious studies professor. It’s unknown how the character will fit into the plot, but one would assume that Olmos’ character will somehow play a part in Mos Def’s storyline of an ex-con who’s had a spiritual conversion.

Olmos will be most recognizable to television fans as Admiral William Adama in Syfy’s celebrated Battlestar Galactica reboot. ‘Dexter’ Season 6 Casts Rapper Mos Def

The season 6 additions for Showtime’s killer drama Dexter continues. Today rapper/actor Dante “Mos Def” Smith joins the cast for the show’s sixth season.

The multi-episode role will be a typical one for Dexter: Mos Def will play an ex-con who’s had a spiritual conversion, yet continues to find himself in the middle of Miami’s violent criminal underworld. Dexter Morgan will, naturally, expose him. No points for guessing how that one ends.

Mos Def is the second new actor confirmed for Dexter, after Colin Hanks’ casting was announced earlier this week. Few details are available on Hanks’ role – spurring speculation that he may be one of the villains in Season 6.

Dexter Morgan’s killing spree may now include the son of a Hollywood icon. Colin Hanks has reportedly signed on for a major recurring role in Dexter season 6.

Specific details about the role Hanks has been handed are scarce, and the network is certainly not offering any clues. What we do know is that Hanks may not be playing one of the three new principle characters the network released details on at the beginning of the month. This information would seem to directly contradict recent comments from Showtime president David Nevins, which had us believing season 6 of Dexter would be without a singular villain for the titular anti-hero to face.
